I just found this article and thought it was great in that it put some of the science into the scent killer topics here recently. Personally, I've learned that a better hydrogen peroxide solution exists instead of the supermarket bought brown bottled stuff I've been using in the recipe. The brown bottle peroxide seems to work, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't mind getting my hands on the pure peroxide solution.

Another tip is to store the solution in an opaque bottle/container to prevent the peroxide from turning to water. As it was, I was just refreshing my batches now and then with a little peroxide.

Very interesting article, Fritz. Thanks. I particularly liked what he said about the store bought peroxide and it's associated odor. I posted on the last thread about my concern of this odor. I'll have to try some of that odorless swimming pool product.

I read his endorsement of extreme scent eliminator with a little grain of salt since that site is sponsored by, and heavily endorses, the X-scent clothing, x-treme scents and artic shield products, all of which fall under the same corporate banner. I do believe in the theory behind their stuff, but would like an independant source's opinion on it.

Yea, the peroxide thing threw me too. I've made it only with the brown bottle stuff (as has most everyone else I know that tried it) and it still does the job. Last year I used it from the start of the season to the end, and after seeing many, many deer, I heard a snort only on the one day I didn't use it. That day it was 15 below and I wasn't going to wet myself down with anything!

The purpose of this is to keep the cost down, so I'll probably keep using the brown bottle stuff and refreshing the solution from time to time. I've got no reason to change my ways given my confidence in it.

On another note, I'm not sure if it was your thread, but someone had put a way too much peroxide in their solution. This would obviously make it smell stronger than needed. My solution smells very much like the Hunters Specialties green liquid soap that I use, and once applied to my skin or equipment, it has no smell at all.

It was me that used too much, but I was only using the first of the two recipes given in that thread. Yours was the second recipe, which I tried second after getting a bit scared about the peroxide smell and concentration. I was afraid of the smell and of possible bleaching of my camo. I am much more comfortable with your proportions, and it has worked twice for me so far in real field conditions.

Even the author's recipe in this article is using a higher proportion of peroxide than yours. I may go ahead and try his as well, simply because I like to tinker with new stuff, but I'll put it to the bleaching test like I did with yours- on a new piece of colored fabric in a slightly heavier dose than I would normally use on my camo, and look for bleaching in a day or two.

I've sprayed this stuff heavily on my hair, clothes, boots, and equipment and had no adverse effects on anything. The one thing that will happen is that light clothing may stiffen up a little if used heavily, but once the soda washes out they become supple again.

Just an FYI:

1. Wash clothes in baking soda only, dry in baking soda only. I may throw in an earth scent dryer sheet from time to time to keep the stuff soft.
2. Wash myself in the same green liquid used in the recipe
3. Spray everything down with the scent killer right before heading out from the car

Glad to find the recipe. I once used store-bought peroxide as a mouthwash after eating lunch on my stand. I then spit it out at the base of the tree. Within three hours I had a buck (about a three-yr-old) come to it and lick every bit of it up. Apparently the smell didn't spook him. I thought it was kind of interesting.

Just a thought here, I'm not a expert in this area but won't the baking soda nutralize any slight oder that the peroxide might have?

It may do just that, which is why people have had success with the brown bottle peroxide anyway. My solution smells like the green soap....almost a sterile smell but it's hard to explain.

I agree, it just may do that, but that brings up a thought I had last year, and still do... Why doesn't the added earth scent, woodland scent, etc. get neutralized in the commercial brands as well? I'm sure it has to do with chemical reactions somehow, but it's just a thought.

By the way, I went to buy some of that commercial pool peroxide and decided not to in the end. I have a three year old and I just don't need another chemical that I have to try to keep away from him. They have the gallon jug in a thick plastic bag with warnings all over it about avoiding skin contact and about it being harmful or fatal if swallowed. I'll just stick with the store bought brown bottle stuff as well. Safer that way and it has already proven itself twice for me so far.
