Maryland opener yesterday.What a day.
Let me start off by saying I think we should get several days for practice hunting. You know like the football and baseball players get exhibition games. If we get a deer it does not count on our tags, its just practice.
Wednesday Sept 15 found myself heading into the woods at 5:20am in a slight rain drizzle.I wanted to get in my stand early, which had been setup several days before,so the woods would have time to calm down.I did not want to get to my stand soaking wet so I put on my rain gear. 15 minutes later I arrived at my stand,I was soaking wet from sweating so bad on the walk in.I tied my bow to the rope attached to my climber stand and started to climb aboard.I found it very difficult to get in the stand so I removed my rain gear.Once again, one leg up and, what is going on here?I cannot get into my stand,my clothes are too tight.Did I gain that much weight since my last hunt in late January?I had no problem the other day getting in the stand.Oh yeah,I had on shorts and a t-shirt. After a little tree hugging and alot of grunting I made it onboard.I made my way up to my spot and after securing my stand with the cinch straps I started to unload my calls and binoculars and hang them on some prehung hooks.I hoisted up the bow and also hung it on a hook.Ok,should be getting daylight soon, better put on my facemask.Hey,wheres my facemask? Not here.I had it back at the van.Crap.. Daylight arrives and out of the darkness I can see it..My facemask that is,its at the bottom of my tree.I decided to do a little grunting and hung my grunt call around my neck.It was at this time I realized that I had no front pockets on my bibs.I could have swore I had front pockets on these things.Only thing I can figure is I grabbed my old pair.Maybe my old pair did not have front chest pockets. As the day wore on ,the rain came down harder and harder and I have had enough. The deer just are not moving. This is just day one of our 4-1/2 month long bow season. So I climb down and head for the van.I am so tired I dont undress out of my camo.I just take off my rubber boots and slip on my loafers. I arrive home and see my wife got off early today. As I enter the house I am greeted by my dogs and my wife asks did I see anything. Before I can answer, she says,"ya know ya got your bibs on backwards"?Hey my bibs do have front chest pockets. What a day!!!! |

NYUCK NYUCK NYUCK... ya gotta love it. "Stuff" happens!!! As far as the deer not moving, Len and I were out there until about 8:30. Saw nothing. We have been hunting around the edges of cornfields and seeing deer come out of the corn on a regular basis. Because of the wind direction we decided to hunt in the woods. Nothing. The deer are all still laying up in the corn. They're just not spending much time in the woods. At our place I mow a huge chunk of ground for the landlord with a bushhog every week. At mid day I'll see deer come out of the corn, cross the lawn into the woods. They go in there to get a drink. 30 minutes later, still 1 or 2 o'clock, they head back to the corn. Lens son sat on the edge of the lawn about a week ago. Right at dark a herd come out of the corn, mill around on the far side of the lawn and then go back to the corn. We're going to have rain for the next several days. I wish they had cut that corn before this rain. They won't beable to get it for probably a couple weeks now.

I seem to have days like that too often...:D
It's amazing that one time in the woods a fella can look so foolish, and the next time he'll arrow a 10 pt. Guess that's why it's called hunting. Get 'em next time. |

Oh well these thing's do happen ,but that's funny you had your bib's on backwards ,you must have been still half asleep when you put them on .Guess you should have stayed in bed then. But there's lot's of time for hunting and there will definetly be better day's.

That is as funny as Bnhunting's atempt at peeing from the stand story. First day out is always fun for me because of how disorganized I am.

Great story and a funny 'punch line'. Like Dave said, we've had a hard time with the corn being up and on 3 sides of our property.

RE: Maryland opener yesterday. What a day.
I felt the same way opening morning, first thing I did was drop my Yardage Pro out of my stand and cringed as I heard it bounce off a rock. Luckily it wasnt damaged. I always feel it takes a couple times in the stand to really get your routine down and get into the serious hunting mode. As for the deer, I wanted to take the first nice doe I saw to get some meat on the table, 3 sits in the stand 5 different small bucks within 10 yards, no doe.

Opening day in Maryland I dropped a 120lbs. doe at 6:45am.Saw 5 more small bucks,ranging from a spike to a 7pt.,seven more does.This was all before 8:30am.
I had to get out of the stand to get the deer on ice,so the morning hunt was kind of short. I'll tell you one thing,I shot the doe with the new NAP Pro-Spitfitfire XP,with an Easton Axis 400.It sounded just like when you hit a softball with a wooden bat,"Thawwapp".At 22yds,complete passthough, and stuck 6in.in the ground. She ran less than 20yds...Bob |
