Slobs
I was watching a fishing show this weekend on OLN. The guys kept using the term SLOB to describe their trophy catches.
I've also seen this term used on big bucks lately in this forum. My mother who doesn't hunt or fish thought that term was disgusting and disrespectful. I can't help but agree. Every time I hear or read that word to describe something wonderful and majestic it turns my stomach. Don't we as ethical hunters and fisherman have a responsibility to portray our sports in the best light possible and with as much respect as the animals deserve? |
RE: Slobs
 I agree Hazcon7, i hope we can learn from this, i myself was not aware of these species being lowered to this status.
Thank you |
RE: Slobs
Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it. The term slob when used in reference to a deer doesn't mean a dirty, messy disgusting creature. It mean a huge, nice, brute of a deer. If we are gonna start getting pickey about something like this then there are a ton of terms we need to stop using in our everyday life. Don't call someone "big as an Ox" They are four legged grazing cattle who's only use is to haul equipment. "smart as a whip" needs to be banned as well. I know I don't want to be called a piece of torture equipment. And lets not even think about "quiet as a mouse", who knows what kind of arguments that would start:D. Basically I think people now days tend to try and read too much into everything and complain at the first sign that something may be out of place. If we stopped using the term slob and picked another one I'm sure it wouldn't take but 5 minutes for someone to find that term offensive.;)

RE: Slobs
Slob is not a term I like or use but I am not offended by it. I'm also not offended by someone who call s a hog a piney rooter;)(I actually like that one).
I prefer to utilize the term Slob to describe unethical "hunters".[:'(] |
RE: Slobs
I agree that using the term slob referring to filthy, disgusting, dirty, etc. to describe a trophy just isn't right. However I do realize that words can take on different meanings in different parts of the country.

RE: Slobs
I prefer to utilize the term Slob to describe unethical "hunters". bearklr, although your point is extreme it is well taken. The term "Monster Buck" could visually mean a horrible disfigured and scary buck - but all of us take it to mean something positive. Personally, i don't like to follow trends and the latest fad just because everyone else is doing it. If you have a good reason to call an animal a slob then more power to ya. but if you're doing it because u saw it on a hunting video then I would question why. |
RE: Slobs
Exactly my thoughts.
Slob HUNTERS - those who shoot an animal, but if it doesn't drop right there, they don't get out of their stand. Slob HUNTER - the guy who takes more than the limit. Slob FISHERMAN - the guy that tosses his styrofoam cup overboard. I can't see the point of using a historically "bad" term to discuss or describe something good, there's enough good words already. As far as hearing it on tv or someplace and then using it myself , well I guess I'm not much of a follower ... |
RE: Slobs
Does anybody know where this term came from? I don't remember hearing it prior to about 6 months ago. In fact, the first place I heard it was on this forum.
|
RE: Slobs
I have never heard this term used to describe something good? Then again I don't watch fishing shows either. You have to remember most of those fishing shows are southern guys I think. They tend to have a different language and a lot of words don't mean the same thing. Every region of the U.S. differs slightly in word meaning and ufinisms (spelling?) Here in MI and OH we call a big deer or trophy a "Hog" among other things. I guess that could be taken in the same way as "slob" would. Fish we call "keepers" or "monsters". Or words I can't even fake on this forum for fear of breaking the rules;).

RE: Slobs
I have never heard it used in this context. I prefer the term "pig" or "hog" myself. ;)

RE: Slobs
Are you sure they weren't saying SLAB..they use that term alot on those fishing shows meaning it's a pretty nice fish good slab of meat so to speak. Just wondering. Pat

RE: Slobs
Didn't we just go through this same exact thread about a month or so ago?[&:]
The term "slob" originated (around here) for a huge fish , meaning big fat slob. I guess it spilled over into other big animals also. I have an idea! Why dont we call poachers....poachers? Then we wont have to be so PC when using the word slob.;) |
RE: Slobs
My mother who doesn't hunt or fish thought that term was disgusting and disrespectful. It does sportsman no good to talk in a manner that does not reflect intelligence and respect to the non hunting group. Your Mother doesn't view hunters or fishing in a positive light now. Thanks a lot video guys. You have made everyone's job tuffer now. Keep it up and we might not be able to hunt or fish at all. [&o][:o][&o] |
RE: Slobs
i had no idea you felt that way Haz. pesonally i never really thought about it.. i mean if we give into all that PC bull when does it stop? can we still call them "MONSTERS?"
by the way buddy, i changed my signature for ya! I cant have my team mates upset with my verbage! :D ;)its all good i dont care what people call em as long as they are not poachers... you can call my Bass a big FAT SLOB of a BASS! |
RE: Slobs

RE: Slobs
Hey daystalker - I wonered what your tagline meant .... for some reason I couldn't figure out what shooting some slouch had to do with trophies .... but I was too embarrassed to ask.....
Now, what about the rest of it .... do you hunt in Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania and Kentucky ? (sorry to be so stupid) |
RE: Slobs
just to put an end to this i think new shooter IS a union worker... and thats why he had the winky smiley in there. i think he meant NO HARM as in a PUN including himself... but again i think he was KIDDING!
|
RE: Slobs
Now I've never actually seen a slob in the woods or on a lake that I could positively identify as a slob but I've seen where they've been. Plastic beverage bottles, candy bar wrappers and pop cans litter the area. I wouldn't blame that on the fish or the wild game. It was done by SLOBS!!! I don't see anything wrong with catching slobs or even shooting at them but I'll spend my time hunting and fishing for CREATURES.

RE: Slobs
The term SLOB started being used about 5 years ago when I arrowed a huge fat buck that was so heavy it bottomed out our 300 pound scale before we even had it off of the ground. And thats after feild dressing. Someone called it THE 400 POUND SLOB I kinda liked the term, it reffers to a huge mature eating machine. No differance than calling a buck a MONSTER Or a BEAST OR A PHANTOM BUCK
Some people just got nothing better to do than try to make them selves feel better about there hunting skills by belittleing every comment or phrase someone else makes;) Here is a link to veiw the SLOB http://www.bloodbro.com/trophyroom/archives/2004/07/dan_with_a_huge.html |
RE: Slobs
WOW Bukmastr.........Nice Majestic Beast of a Creature........I sure wouldn't belittle it by calling it a slob but you killed it so call it what you want...Happy Huntin
|
RE: Slobs
Hey WVCritterGitter,
Glad you liked the SLOB, But I sure wouldn't call him a BEAST or a CREATURE. It might offend some one. ;) It would be a pretty bland world if we could only reffer to them as whitetail deer. |

RE: Slobs
Man! That's one Monster, SLOB, Beast, pig of a deer. Good job. I doubt that buck's feelings are gonna be hurt. Did you get that dude in WI?
[/quote] Did you get that dude in WI? That there is a S.E. Wisconsin Swamp buck. Watched him for 1/2 the year and when everything was right moved in for the kill. I let a 140's 10 point go by while waiting on this guy, then 10 minutes later was rewarded for holding out. |
RE: Slobs
Bukmastr, that is a great looking buck for sure and I can understand how the nickname got started from seeing it.
Some people just got nothing better to do than try to make them selves feel better about there hunting skills by belittleing every comment or phrase someone else makes Kudos to you for starting a catchy phrase that has caught on to the rest of the industry - now you're name will forever be synonymous with SLOB. ;) Personally I don't like it and will never use that terminology but you have a right to say it and I will defend that right. However, it adds fuel carelessly to the anti hunting cause - none of us should take that lightly. |
RE: Slobs
Bukmastr,
How do you know that you started it? When I posted a thread similar to this one a month or so back I believe a couple of guys posted saying that was a term they had heard used for years and years. I still personally think it's stupid and disrespectful, that's just my opinion. Some people just got nothing better to do than try to make them selves feel better about there hunting skills by belittleing every comment or phrase someone else makes |
RE: Slobs
ORIGINAL: silentassassin Some people just got nothing better to do than try to make them selves feel better about there hunting skills by belittleing every comment or phrase someone else makes thats what makes this forum great that we all express our OWN oppinions and everyone respects those oppinions, weather they agree or disagree, those oppinions are respected... i dont know of any other forum that has guys who actually can do that. and by the way, who ever thinks that they were the first ones to call an animal something is crazy.. how many hundreds of thousands of hunters have been out there hunting before we ever got there? i think i have heard that term used for fish when i was about 10 whcih is more than 16 years ago. but like i said i didnt hear about the term untill i got here. |
RE: Slobs
Off the subject but what a beautiful animal Bukmastr. Did you hire a skidder to get him out of the woods?
