my longest pin is set for 60yrds. I have never shot over 60yrds, but it makes since the more practice over what you would shoot at a deer, it makes it that much more easier when you do have to shoot at 40yrds at a deer.

In the wooded areas 20 or 30 might be all you need but out here in the on the praries you might only get 40 or sometimes only 50 yards from an elk or mulie. I know, I know someone is going to say, I have never had to shoot over 20 yards, but if you can shoot a killing shot at these distances and it is a relaxed animal and you can place the arrow, I say take the shot. I have shot an elk at 31 yards, an elk at 53 yards and a bear at 19 yards so far. The farthest any animal I have shot has gone has been 20 yards and the shortest 3 steps. I have seen all of them fall. Thats why I practice at 20 to 50 yards regularly.

Generally I practice no farther than 50 - 55 yards. I did take a nice fat doe at 40 last year which is the farthest I've ever shot a critter with a bow. Normally its about 12 - 15 yards because of the tree stand and would actually like it more at about 20 - 25. My pins are set at 25, 35, and 45 yards.

Since I don't hunt anything larger than the whitetail, I practice out to 50 yards. I used to practice at 80 yards when 3D was all the rave, but I gave that up for lent years ago. (Did I spell "lent" right? .)
I think the farthest I've made with the bow was 33 yards... but I prefer deer be within 30. I do enjoy shooting long range for practice, but for hunting, closer is always better IMO.
