Bows becoming too high $ to buy...

I love the sport of bowhunting, but with the sight of prices on new bows, it almost scares the seasoned archer away. I bought all of my arrows, tips, accessories, and bow for as much as the price of 1 new BowTech! Certainly that piece of metal doesn't cost them that much!!!

You can spend a fortune on a new bow if you want to. Not to set a fire here but matthews and bowtech are expensive bows. Thery are very nice bows but are pricey. I've shot PSE bows for years and have always had great luck. They do have some pricey high end models but I got my firestorm lite for $300.00. I think that's a pretty good price but my point is you don't need a 600$ bare bow to be a good shot or successful hunter.

They have to re-coup the R&D, pro-staffers, overhead, employees, rent, etc.

We keep paying, they will keep raising. That's the beauty of a capitalist society. You've got to love it!!!

Actually, when you look at it, you don't really need to spend big $$$ for bowhunting. You can be just as successful with 10yr old equipment as you can with todays state of the art stuff.

Just as Double Creek mentioned we keep paying, they keep raising. It's not just limited to bowhunting. If you want the latest and greatest stereo system, super crisp plasma screen TV, fastest sports car, massive SUV, etc. You're going to take a hit in the wallet.

I spent $20 bucks on a garage sale bow, took it to the archery shop to get restrung, checked out. Then put a rest and sight on it. Plus a release and 6 new arrows. Even then it cost me $200 bucks to get ready. Well worth the investment, but I cannot imagine spending $500 for a bow. My gun cost me $300 plus $150 for the scope. Expensive hobby. But if I had the money I would probably spend it. I really don't see any reason to upgrade bows every year though. Seems to me if it shoots right and you can use it, that should be it. We don't trade in our wives every couple of years for the newer model. Although we might want to..
Just my observations...

You think trading to a new bow is expensive, compared to the price of a new wife a new bow is free.:D[8D]

LOL.
Lucky for me my wife doesn't trade in her husband.:D

I know what you mean about the bow but I look at it this way. I shoot my deer rifle 3 maybe 4 shots to confirm it is on. To do this I have to drive to the range. Then I shoot one shot at a deer and put it away until next year. Gun and scope cost me about $700. My bow have have been shooting about 4 times a week about 40 shots a session since I bought it in May. Lately more then that. For the money I get way more from the bow then I ever will from my gun. I don't like paying high prices anymore then the next guy but I think you get more for your money with a bow. JMO.

You know the old sayin

You gotta pay if you wanna play!

Seriously though. I get much enjoyment out of my bow. It is well worth the money I have in it. I have around $1000 into my Patriot. To me it is a bargin for the fun I have shooting. I mean seriously if you break it down over a year its only like $83 a month. I absolutly get $83 worth of enjoyment out of it per month.

Then come this winter after hunting season I will sell it and do it all over again;) The fun never ends:)

I dont like to pay the prices but this is my passion. $700 dollars for a bow is high but woth it im my book.I have a friend that buys a Starbucks coffee everyday @ $4, 4x365=$1460 dollars a year for coffee:D. Another friend that smokes 2 packs a day at $3 a piece 6x365=$2190 for smokes. If it makes you happy it is worth every penny.

I guess thats one way to look at it. I paid for my Mathews twice, first time at the pro shop. The real payment came when I got home:D But I do love to shoot and hunt so to me its worth every penny. I'm not sure if my wife would agree.

I wish things would settle down some with the prices. The price tag for a chunk of machined aluminum gets higher each year. It is pretty sad when my last bow, including accesories was more than my 7MM Rem Mag with Leuapold 4x12 scope!

But, of course I keep laying it out. Sometimes I think if I was addicted to drugs instead of bowhunting I might be better off financially.:D Naaa, nevermind, drugs won't get me as high as bowhunting does.;)

I agree I look at the purchase as a whole years worth of entertainment. And if you break it down per shot (1000/10,400)= $.09 per shot. (that's only 200 shots a week).:D

I have a harder time paying for the accessories with a new bow. $100 for a mathews quiver? Come on! $100 a dozen for my carbons make me look for hours if I lose an arrow. $10 a broadhead is a little steep, too. Oh well, I still love it.

I know getting into this sport isn't cheap anymore but it doesn't get any cheaper getting into other sports as well.Everything comes with a cost now a day's . I love my new bow and accessories but it's sure well worth it to me.

When bow manufacturers started "giving" lifetime warrantys on limbs/risers....prices started shooting up. How many archers keep their bows for a lifetime? I guarantee that if all manufacturers limited their warranty to 5 years or less......prices would go down!;) Funny thing, I've seen dealers figure out ways to replace something broken on 2nd-3rd owner bows.............and use the original warranty, perhaps that has helped increase bow prices as well.

RE: Bows becoming too high $ to buy...

My first bow was ten years old when I got it and I was too dumb to know it wasn't a great bow, but it hit what I was aiming at every time(if I did my part). Then three years ago someone at the range(shooting one of the big two) started cuttin on my equipment. After I out shot, and put him (with his fat mouth) and his expensive bow in there proper place, for some reason, I decided, I did in fact need a new bow. I bought a bottom end hoyt for around five and change with quiver, rest, and sights. My old bow was about shot out anyway, and my new bow is getting close too( I shoot EVERY day, no matter what). But I guess you can't put a price on something that makes me feel like there's something I enjoy and can do well, doesn't harm anyone( including myself), and keeps me from finding other things that might be not so healthy to do. As far as price; I believe that if people refused to buy something because the price seemed too high, then the manufacurer could either lower their price to stay in buissness, or find another buissness, but people inherently like to indulge and spoil themselves. And my next bow will be one of the expensive boys, but as much as I shoot, it really does come out to less than I spend on bottles of water.

NOBODY needs spend a single cent on archery equipment. Raw materials are just laying around in the woods, free for the taking. All you have to know is how to fashion them into workable bows, strings and arrows.

But that IS the trick, isn't it. ;)

I could buy a used bow for $75.00, put another $75.00 into refurbishing it, buy the arrows, broadheads, and necessary bowhunting accessories for another $100.00, go into the field with someone using a $1000.00+ rig, and never have the first thought that the person with the costly rig has an edge on me. You don't need a Corvette to drive to the neighborhood grocery store....a few times out of a year.

true, you don't need a corvete. But it sure handles better and feels better and looks better than a cavalier. Both will get you where you want to go. It is all a matter of what you want. If you want the latest technology and the big names you are gonna pay for it ;)

I, for one, must agree. Bow prices have skyrocketed in recent years especially on the top of the line models. I would definitely like to see about $200 knocked off of some of those high end models.

But, as someone else stated it is not just bowhunting. I picked up a Cabelas Waterfowl catalog from the bathroom pile yesterday and leafed through it. When four plastic decoy shells cost $100 and a piece of fabric attached to some spring steel goes for $400 then you know somebody is making a killing with those prices. ;)

Buy one used. Also, if you are using it for hunting it doesn't have to be high priced. The bow you shoot will just have to be accurate when you shoot it. A $200 bow will kill a deer the same way a $1000 bow will.
