Ontario Moose

I have 47 days until my Ontario moose hunt. I was wondering if anyone up there knows how the year has been on them. Any weird weather, bugs, etc. that I need to be ready for?

Thanks in advance for the info.

The weather has been lousy. At this rate it should be snowing when you get here. I started scouting last week and once again there is a shortage of calves. We have three archery tags for the six of us and things are shaping up for a good hunt once again.

Where are you headed up here?

We haven't had much of a summer this year,I was up near Tamogami this past week and the mosquito's were horrid .I will be heading up near WaWa in the middle of Sept for the archery hunt with a bull and cow tag this season .Come prepared for any type of weather last season it was 26 one day and then we got 6 inch's of snow the next day,the weather can change drastically at this time of season.Make sure you don't forget your rain gear it's a must and also bring your bug suit or lot's of repellent it might come in handy, you just never know what your gonna get .
Where about's are you hunting,maybe if I'm close I'll look you's up. I'll be hanging out in 21B .

Mooseman! where about's are you located?

Nubo,

Do you have high speed? I made some cool windows/media/video files of the three kills last year. I was teaching new partners and filmed their kills. If you like, I could send them off. I sure wish we could post video clips here. They are about 4 mbs each.

45 days and I`m leaving for 21A, we have a bull and cow for the archery hunt. Bought a new rain suit this year( all the rain last year convinced me I needed a new one). Yep, bugs, rain, snow, warm days and lets not forget about wind, sure sounds like moose hunting to me:D.

RE: Ontario Moose

I don't mind the bugs, rain, and snow but I really dislike the wind. That makes for a tough hunt. Sneaking through deep cover in high wind is not as appealing to calling from the stand locations.

Hey Nubo.... did a fly in fishing deal last year out of White River onto Esnagi Lake. Damn good time. Marmac lodge I think it was. They do Moose hunts as well and I was thinking about giving it a go.

Ever hear of them? And any other suggestions on guides that won't break the bank. I really like the area.

I think that I know the outfitters your talking about and if it's the one I'm thinking of { Yellow Plane}then I have heard good thing's about them ,we pass them on our way in they are situated just outside white River is this correct?there also is one out of WaWa but I'm not sure of thier name but If you like i will find out what it is and try and get you a phone number .I love hunting in White River we've been very lucky there .I've been hunting there for about 12 yrs now and we know the area pretty well. I can also find out what other outfitters there are there if you like .There's only one that I know right in White River and it's run by a women and I wouldn't recommend her I've had a bad experience with her ,her name is Loraine.

Mooseman,

I'd love to see those video clips! PM me and I'll get you my email address.
46 more days until we head out here in Manitoba, I hope this cool weather holds for another month or two.
I think I'm the only one around that loves this cold summer we're having.
Thanks

We have a high of 64 today in Chicago area. I love it. Everyone else is whining about the cool temps, but it just gets me fired up for fall.

Thanks Nubo,
We flew out on White River Air into Esnagi Lake. One of the fishing guides did bear and moose as well. Nice guy and I kinda picked his brain...didn't have a lot of faith on taking one with a bow though.

I do like the area a lot. White River was very pretty. I can drive there in7-8 hrs fromm the Macinac Bridge as well which is nice. I wouldn't have to ship meat if I bring the truck.

I may email you asking a bazillion more questions if that's cool.

Taking a Moose with my bow...that IS my dream hunt.

From area 40 (temagami) theres moose but those #$@% black bears have been doing a number on the calf pop. In our area there is also alot of white tail comming around. This has been over the last few years. But all in all its looking good here. Bulls call well in late Sept, 1st week of Oct.

Mooseman,

Sorry!! Can you try again. I haven't updated my email.

New one is [email protected].

Thanks again

RE: Ontario Moose

Spot Light,

I suspect bears may be contributing to the recent decline in calves in our area. Last year was the first year I have noticed that so many cows were by themselves and very aggresive. This year looks to be the same. After walking many slashes I can report I found only two spots where two calves are alive. I sure hope someone realizes something is up and takes action.

I like to be hunting anywhere around the 21st of Sept. We have shot 80% of our large bulls on this day. Its like magic for me. Although smaller bulls will reliably come anytime during the archery season for us. Giant bulls that live a nocturnal existance are easiest before the actually few days of the rut. I have called in a couple of bulls in December during the fourth rut before. Opening day leading to the 23rd I will not miss for anything.

Mooseman that's a great little clip ,I've tried 4 times and haven't got completely through it yet .I've gotten as far as where your dragging him out .If you have more please send them ,I think they're great .i haven't tried video yet but maybe next season I';ll give it a try.

Tru_Shot no problem bud anyway I can help just ask ,my e-mail is on my profile and I'd be glad to help you out in any way I can .Archery for moose is the most satisfying way to go when hunting moose .I haven't chambered a cartridge since I started bowhunting anytime just send me an e-mail.

Yeah mooseman something has to be done about the bears. I pick up a licence and our group shoots all the bears we come across in deer and moose season. I also agree that the 20th of Sept is the best week for moose and I too hace had the ocasional Post-Rut suscess whith bulls. I think they are like the whitetails, when the cows arn't bred they come back into heat in Nov and Dec. Oh and great pic. U up in the area of Dryden where that big deer was poached last year?

Bringing back the spring bear hunt would help. You guys like that first week the best? Temps can be way too hot for me. The group before me was swimming in the lake before I get there. I prefer to try and hit a frosty morn.
