I am new to bow hunting and have been practicing with field tips all Summer but now figure I'd better try with some broadheads as our bow season in Minnesota is about a month away. I've been using a bag target I bought from the local pro shop but they tell me that will tear up the bag and that I should buy a foam block target. I trust them on the first account but don't really want to invest in another target that I won't use that often. Any suggestions on alternatives or homemade targets that could handle limited practice with broadheads? Also, will practice dull the blades and if so, how should I resharpen them? Thanks!

You could invest in a fieldtip/broadhead target. After the bag is worn out, you will have the other one. Not a waste at all. Just a little "pre-planning". And YES the blades will be dull.

you can go to walmart if you have one in your area and get a foam target for like 14 bucks. I just get one every year to check my fixed blades and stuff. They get shot up pretty fast, but they are cheap compared to everything else.

You got some good answers for the targets. Like mammasboy mentioned the blades will get dull. I just keep one or two for practice and then use new ones for hunting. I think there are several here that do the same.

My $0.02

Go find the cheapest (Cabela's - Riverbottom or Backyard buck - brand made by Delta) 3D target with an equally cheap replacement vital. Each year I replace the vital once & I'm good to go. I also put mutlitple spots on the vital so I can shoot 3 arrows @ a time.

2nd best - Morell's (I think) Humungo (sp?). Made for broadheads and cheap. Bought one last year & I'll probably get a 2nd season out of it - only thing is my BH's are coming out the other side so in some cases (with both solutions) I'm unscrewing the head to pull the arrow.

A final suggestion (dad does this) - the cheap wal-mart foam deal (it's tough stuff & about 2" thick) on a round bale of straw - again - his BH's go through the foam but we're not burying it to the fletchings so we're not hurting the arrows.

The one I'm talking about is styrafoam, like what the cups are made of. It's about a foot thick and at least 2 foot high and wide. It has shrink wrap around it with target faces already on it. They work pretty well, you just can't shoot the same spot too many times or the arrow will pass thru it. Oh if you use replacable blade heads just use new blades when you are done.

man I got a walmart version of the block called the 4x4 one of the broadhead sides has lasted the last couple of weeks of regular shootin and is still in good shape...got it for about 40 bucks....ah bucks theres that word again...hurry Oct1st

Try a pile of fine sand or dirt. No rocks of course. Stamp it down and it never wears out. Can't say the same for those blades tho.
