RE: Hunting on one acre
Do it all the time. Bowfanatic is right, open the window very quitely. The good news is that deer aren't spooked by ESPN playing in the background.
Seriously, is there a swingset with a fort? Very good stand to use. I pretty much gage which yard I hunt and what time by the deer the home owner tells me thats there. I have yards that don't draw a lot of huge bucks so they are the meat yards. Then I have ones the regularly see some quality bucks come through. Now a days since I really don't care to eat deer meat I don't mess with the meat yards. A freind has some older pics that I'm trying to get scanned in. If I get them I'll post some pics of neighborhood deer. |
RE: Hunting on one acre
I'm going to do that this fall. It's my 1 acre. The only worry I have is if a deer runs and drops dead on someone elses lawn. I have a creek bottom behind the house and other homes on the other side. There are a few deer that come through, but haven't seen any bucks yet, but I only lived there since December.

Well at least it should take too long to scout.[8D] If I were you though, I'd make sure I have permission to go on the bordering neighbor property at least to fetch anything. chances are that game will not stay on the one acre after being shot. With houses that close, are you sure you can even shoot a bow legally?

RE: Hunting on one acre
Personally, I wouldn't worry about where the deer goes after being shot. I've never had a deer die in a neighboors yard. They always bolt for the woods. I also hunt some places without neighboors knowing I'm there. It's an agreement I have with some home owners. As I also stated in some past posts, I've hunted successfully one spot for years without the wife knowing I'm there.:D

I've never had a deer die in a neighboors yard. Such is life. |
RE: Hunting on one acre
My land extends 90 yds into the woods behind my house. I hunt back there all the time. It's far from a honey hole, last year I didn't even get a shot at one. I mainly use it for times when I can't get to my real hunting spots and still have the need to be sitting up a tree.

JustHunt - I was not aware that there were any deer in Honolulu Hawaii - especially having lived there myself for 4 years.

RE: Hunting on one acre
My tip would be first to check your local game laws to be sure you are far enough from your neighbors house when hunting. I imagine you are so this should be fine. If this is the case and it is legal to hunt there then hunt wherever you want. Chances are if a deer runs onto a neighbors property you have full permission to track it and recover it. At least that's the way it is here in Pa. Once again I would check your game laws to be certain, but you shouldn't have any problems.

RE: Hunting on one acre
It's got a 40 acre field on one side, 49 acres of woods behind it, 285 acres of woods in front of it, and a 30 acre field on the other side.
The closest neighbors house is about 200 yards away and the next closest is like 400 yards away. It's got a 40 acre field on one side, 49 acres of woods behind it, 285 acres of woods in front of it, and a 30 acre field on the other side. it's the perfect funnel it's got a few scattered trees and a little brush. I heard there's been some major bucks that has been seen that go through there... ![]() |
RE: Hunting on one acre
I've never hunted a piece that small but my most productive stand is in a 3 acre parcel. It's very similar to the one you describe, A thick creek bottom right in the middle of suburbia.
I hunt a couple of funnels, one where they cross the brook, and the other where they parallel the creek to a point of woods that crossed the neighbors field. I've never had one make it to the neighbors property but I'm sure it would cause an uproar. Most important is to ensure you're legal where you're shooting from. If you cause a stir and a co shows up he'll likely ask where you were when you shot. As long as your legal go for it. It may well be the most productive stand you hang this year. |
RE: Hunting on one acre
Then it sounds like there is nothing to worry about. Just set up your stand in the funnell on a path leading to the fields and wait. If you feel like you need to, just talk to your neighbors and let them know you will be hunting on your land and that if a deer should run onto their land then you will have to trail it. If you don't think they will understand then just hunt. Like I said, you should have full permission to retrieve a wounded game animal onto any property and if the property owner disagrees then call the game commission and they should take you to the kill.

RE: Hunting on one acre
Looks like a classic funnel there in your photo!
In yard deer hunting, is it proper etiquette to wave to the snoopy old lady next door BEFORE the shot, or AFTER? |
RE: Hunting on one acre
Always wave before the shot. If you wait until after she might not make it :D
|
RE: Hunting on one acre
LOL!!!!!!! if she's like the old bat I got by me now you might not want to miss....
![]() ![]() [:'(]Well one fields on the north and the other is on the south so they got to go through there, around these parts you don't see many deer out in fields.. Yeah it's OK here to hunt on one acre of land. |
RE: Hunting on one acre

RE: Hunting on one acre
HAZCON7,
Thanks for bringing my outdated profile to my attention. No, I don't live in Hawaii now. I did 4 years there with the Air Force. Retired now in Illinois. I'm looking forward to October 1 and all the hype about Illinois deer. |
RE: Hunting on one acre
I ditto talking to the neighbors just to let them know what's going on. I will be hunting one acre and a half in a thick stand of woods that we are currently building a house in. If one of them gun hunts their land (if its fairly rural), they might even share some scouting tips since your're not directly competing with them. This is what happened in my case.
On a related note, I've noticed that deer in residential areas are more accustomed to people, which I guess might make sense. Don't get me wrong, they still take off when they see you, but they still keep coming through evening after evening despite noise and scent from humans in the area. Does anyone have any different opinions of scent in residential areas? Do the same rules apply or can you be more lax? |
RE: Hunting on one acre
not sure, but some states require at least ten acres to be legal to hunt. in a community type subdivision that is. i know texas is like that.
|
RE: Hunting on one acre
By residentail I guess I meant a rural area with other houses and farms within the close vicinity - within regular earshot and easy eyesight of the deer. For instance, in my area, deer have to cross over several dirt roads to make it throught their trails through the woods and often stop and watch the cars drive by. It is also not uncommon for them to pass within a hundred yards of a busy campground in a state park in the evening when most of the campers have settled down.
I agree. I might feel kind of weird hunting in a subdivision. But I guess a good spot to lean a ladder stand against would be the community entrance sign, you know, one that reads something like "Welcome to Prairie Meadows." : ) |
RE: Hunting on one acre
I would pick a spot to hunt from where there is no way a bullet could go any where but in the hillside/ground. Safety is the #1 issue when you hunt such a small piece of ground. I would then get set up in that area & shoot the deer you want buck/doe in the head with a rifle.

RE: Hunting on one acre
My hunting buddy is permitted to hunt like that in his town. It's perfectly legal and all he has to do is notify the adjacent neighbors that he will be bow hunting and that's that! I'm jealous that he is allowed to do that. However, his town has a bad deer problem and is proactive in getting the deer down to a manageable size. He hunts smart, though. Good stand location with safety in mind and also baits. He'll get 10-15 in at a time. He's told me his arrow has fallen off and clanked on the stand. The deer scatter only to return 1 minute later! Who can say that has happened to them in the field?! The deer are basically tamed to a point and not much sport in it, but it sure beats hauling into the thick woods when you really only have an hour to hunt per day. Plus, he donates a portion of his kill to charity and he gets good practice...and only takes does as he won't/can't take a buck and call that hunting!

RE: Hunting on one acre
I don't recommend talking to any neighbors. Let the home owner do this if they feel it's needed. I have agreements with some of my home owners to be descreet and that their neighbors will never know I'm hunting there. They want the deer gone but not quarrals with the neighbors. Like I stated before one home owner didn't want the quarrel with his own wife. That's fine by me.
As far as the deer, some of them are a trip. My friend was hunting a yard and choose a new tree. It was before light and was about 10' up when he encountered his first branch. He was in the process of breaking it when he heard a deer about 20 yrds away. He was convinced it was a doe. He continued doing his thing as the deer came closer. It turned out it was the big 10 point we had been after. He was able to pull his bow up and nock his arrow while the deer was 10 yrds. He didn't feel comfortable taking the shot since his stand wasn't secured to the tree and he wasn't attached with a safety harness. He let him walk that morning figuring we would get another shot since the deer didn't seem to care. We never did get another shot at him. Oh well. |
