another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
okay, its time for another stupid hypothetical question...
lets say that every state has outlawed compound bows. The only way to keep bowhunting is using traditional bows (e.g. recurves, longbows.) would you take up trad to keep that burning bowhunting passion going, or would you just say forget it, i can kill enough (insert quarry here) etc. with my rifle, blackpowder, etc. to fill my (insert quarry here) hunting desires?... i know there are guys on the boards that are already trad. but, i would like to hear your comments anyway. i also know that i've seen a few names asking questions in the traditional section (where i often lurk,) who are obviously thinking of picking up trad. what your response? there are a lot of members who are just starting archery and am also curious as to their responses as well...hey, not to mention the veteran guys who have shot compounds their entire lives. would you make the switch? would you give up the let-off, 30 inch ata, mech releases, mech broadheads, faster speeds. etc. to pursue your bowhunting passion? i, myself, would go trad in a second. most of us will agree nothing compares to chasing our prey in the close quarters of the bowhunting world...i, in fact, have plans to go trad later in life, maybe in 10 or 15 years. who knows, maybe sooner. but, right now i'm just having too much dang fun with my compound... :) please, lets not turn this into a compound vs. trad bashing thread, that's not the intent here. (let's leave that in the chuck adams thread. :D) let's have sincere answers... |
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
I would go trad in a heart beat, the reason I went to archery was to extend my time in the woods.
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
Absolutely!
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
I'm thinking about getting a recurve anyway. It looks like it would be a blast to shoot a recurve instinctively. So, yes, I would definitely still try to bowhunt with traditional gear.
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
Of course I would, I'd even be ready for it!

RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
Oh, I imagine I could tear myself away from compounds without many tears or much effort. Sure is nice just grabbing my quiver and stickbow to head out and do some shooting/hunting.
With the compound it's the bow, case, arrow box, tool box, spare parts, grease gun, shop manual, laptop 'puter for tech support... [8D] Well, it's ALMOST that bad. [&:];) |
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
Nope, I would quit if that ever happened.
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
Sure, I'd like to try my hand at traditional, if given the opportunity. I started out with compound bows, and never shot a recurve or long-bow.

RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
for sure i would but i actually have though about buying a recurve just to get in some fun shooting i think they are a blast to shoot

RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
I almost wish this were the case. I'd love to go old school as I personally feel it is a purer form of hunting. To take it one step further I'd like to make my own bow and arrows. Unfortunately all this would require more time and dedication than bow hunting already takes from my limited "free time". I hope as I get older and my kids get a little older I'll be able to get them involved in archery. But right now with a 2 year old and another due in November I can't see having the time. It's not as though you can shoot with little kids running around. Presently I only get 15-20 minutes a day to shoot. So I shoot 16 to 20 arrows.
In order for me to hunt with traditional gear I'd need to dedicate more time that I don't have. And without time to get proficient with traditional gear I owe it to my counterparts, the game I hunt to shoot the weapon I'm most competent with. |
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
adams, trust me on this. Anyone that's got the time to shoot 15 minutes a day has got the time to shoot a stick.
In fact, you can get a good deal more shooting done in those 15 minutes with a stickbow than you can with a decked out compound. I'm talking at least 30 arrows (if you want) vs 16-20. Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to spend hours and hours at the range every day to shoot traditional. A few arrows shot with good form and good concentration is worth many times more than shooting a hundred arrows with so-so form and mental fatigue. And you'll find you've got more time to shoot than you think you do. Leave the stick strung up with a few arrows beside the door. Whenever you've got a break, sneak out to the backyard and fling a few.;) If you want to try traditional, just do it. Get yourself a nice recurve, some arrows and a copy of 'Become the Arrow' by Byron Ferguson. That's a very good read for anyone wanting to try traditional - or even for someone who wants to try barebow shooting with a compound. |
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
I would rather throw rocks at em...........:D
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
Yeah, but you'd use a sling in order to get the speed up.

RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
I would switch in a second. I am a bowhunter, it doesn't matter which bow I use. I am thinking about picking a used trad. bow up off ebay for $20 to see if I like it.

RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
I took the same advice that Arthur P just gave ,
along with some from Jimpok , when I first got interested in bow hunting . I chose a recurve over compounds to start out , compounds just looked to complicated to me , and I'm loving it . I got to a reasonable level of proficiency in remarkably short time , and I'm looking forward to going out with it this Fall . Even if you're shooting a compound exclusively , give trad a look , you'll like it . :) |
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
great responses so far...
this is just a 'bump.' |
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
absolutely! I fall in line with some of the others here. I would love to but i don`t know if i would have time to practice like i would want to,[&:]
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
without a doubt!
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
I have shot longbows a couple of times, wouldnt have a problem switching over.
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
I started shooting with a recurve when I was 7 or 8, of course I'd still bowhunt.
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
I would switch. No doubt in my mind.
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
I want to go traditional anyway and this would only expedite the issue. I've never gun hunted deer and never ever will...if they banned bowhunting altogether I'd take pictures.
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
Yes, I shoot both types of bows already:D
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
D@mn skippy. I love the sport too much to give it up.
I'm prolly gonna pick up a stickbow next year anyway. I've had the itch for a couple of years now, I've just never scratched it. |
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
Yep.
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
No question about it, I'd go tradition in a heartbeat. Im actually thinking about getting a new recurve after this season and hopefully be able to use it by next year.
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
Wouldn't even give it a second thought. I would have a recurve within a week.:D
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
If my Remington semi-auto 3" Mag shotgun were outlawed, I would just pick up my pump 16 gauge Wingmaster without any thought of having less firepower.
Same goes with my compounds vs. my recurves. |
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
Been there.... done that.... working on renewing my skills as I type.;)
I'm the good looking one on the right. 1970 Texas[&:] ![]() |
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
It's the way I started and it certainly wouldn't bother me a bit if that was the only way to hunt. In fact, I've been drying some staves so I can make a few self-bows (I'm sure it'll take at least that many to make one that is shootable). There are times when I hunt for the meat, but most of the time, I'm looking for a challenge. Heck, I may even take a shot at making my own arrows.
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
I've been hunting and shooting trad bows for years-30+.I hunted with a compound for a few seasons and had good success with it but I could never get used to sights and the break ove in the draw so I went back to my recurves.
If the tables were reversed and they outlawed trad bows-I'd most likely hunt with a compound(although begrudgingly;)). |
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
No doubt about it. I've always enjoyed stick bows and love the lure they hold. I hunt exclusively with the compound, but wouldn't stop bow hunting if it was mandated otherwise.
|
RE: another stupid hypothetical question (would you go trad?)
I would switch no problem, go with a long bow
