Right or Wrong?
My doctor says no bowhunting for eight months
have had two heart attacks and didnt know what had happened.I have never thought of useing a crossbow but do not want to go to hunting with a gun,is it wrong if you have no other choice,I dont condone them any other time but here I am what do you guys feel about this?? |
RE: Right or Wrong?
I see no problem yote....Do you want to continue Bowhunting? I know I would!!
|
RE: Right or Wrong?
I don't understand, is he saying no bow for eight month? Or no hunting for eight months. If the problem is with drawing the bow, then by all means, use the crossbow. If the problem is actually hunting, then you may want to go by his wishes and stay out of the woods.

RE: Right or Wrong?
"Is it wrong if you have no other choice?"
HECK NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If it's legal and keeps you involved with something you truly love... do it! Your health is far more important than what some may think. If your doc says, "Go for it." Then... by all means... Use the crossgun! Your friends will always respect you no matter what you use. If they don't... they never were your friends to begin with... especially when health issues are involved. Bottom line: You shouldn't have to ask your friends for their support.... or ask a total stranger to make an important decision for you either. You make the decision... and I will support you either way. -DT ps-Like you... I have always been against the use of crossguns. However, I may wake up tomorrow and have a stroke [or whatever]. Guaranteed... you will see me with a crossgun in my good hand[and I won't give a 'shirt' what anyone thinks]. Edited by - PA DropTine on 02/25/2002 11:18:43 |
RE: Right or Wrong?
Yeah, if your doc is saying no hunting, you should comply. Lots of factors besides what you hunt with go into making a heart attack. Bad diet, lack of any real exercise and so on. Take care of yourself first then worry about all the little stuff.

RE: Right or Wrong?
Sounds like you need to talk more with the doctor and get it clear as to what you can do .

RE: Right or Wrong?
I want to get back to my bowhunting I am
lucky I can hunt 6 miles from the house no drawing a bow but my wife got me a cell phone and have a couple of hunting buddies that are going with me or I dont go[wife said that]thanks for the replys, take care! |
RE: Right or Wrong?
If it is legal and you have no other choice do it! That is why they allow crossbow in most states, is for health reasons.

RE: Right or Wrong?
Do anything that enables you to climb up in that tree and hear "TWACK". Your next problem is not having another heart attack dragging the critter out. Find a friend.
|
RE: Right or Wrong?
If a crossbow is your only choice then by all means use it. I see nothing wrong with it to begin with & I sure don't see anything wrong with it because of your medical condition. Use it & continue hunting! Good Luck
|
RE: Right or Wrong?
It isn't wrong in the least. If that is your only option, by all means use it. Anytime a disabled (or 'unabled' person in your case) person has an opportunity to hunt, traditional or not, I am all for it.
Just my two cents. chad |
RE: Right or Wrong?
I have a friend that started hunting with me this year and I with him. He uses a crossbow because of a permanent sholder problem. He still has to do the same things I do, find a tree, climb, sit and wait, judge distance and shoot straight. You don't have much advantage other than not having to draw it. All the things that can go wrong in a tree for me can go wrong for him. Have a party. Your only problem is..... NOW YOU HAVE TO SPEND ALL THAT MONEY ON A CROSSBOW SETUP.
|
RE: Right or Wrong?
I feel sorry for you...only because you have to go out and spend a bunch of money. You'll still get the same enjoyment out of the sport as you always did. If you're like me, you'll still get up in the tree every morning and thank GOD you're not at work, and enjoying his creations. It's break my heart to have to retire my bow, but I'd buy a crossbow in a second, and be back out there.

RE: Right or Wrong?
I'd be more worried that the next "Missouri Monarch" will walk out in front of me and I'd die of a buck fever heart attack. Then again, I can only think of one other activity that would be ok to die while involved in, and it doesn't necessarily involve the woods, but it could.

RE: Right or Wrong?
I agree with all the guys here. I would still go hunting even if I got so bad off that I couldn't shoot at all. I love to hunt and a decision of crossbow/bow would be a no-brainer. Just do all you can to stay happy and healthy and good luck next season!

RE: Right or Wrong?
Go for it yote and enjoy life to its fullest. Shame on any one that would deprive you of being able to hunt.

RE: Right or Wrong?
Coyote,
There are thoes who turn there noses up at the crossbow but I am not one of them. I hunt with a Jennings T Master and a High Country Extreme, But I consider the Crossbow more sporting then Hunting with a Rifle. I have seen Deer jump the string on a CrossBow, but never on a Rifle. I am a rifle Hunter too. Hunt with the Crossbow and feel proud that you have the priviledge of doing so. |
RE: Right or Wrong?
Buy a good one and learn to use it, and bowhunt away. Crossbows in archery season are legal with medical permit for people like you - theres absolutely no shame in it.
|
RE: Right or Wrong?
I think that anything you have to do to participate in something you love is fine, as long as it's legal. I wouldn't care what anyone else thought. I have no doubt that anyone who loves the sport of bohunting would do the same thing, so don't let that bother you in the least.

RE: Right or Wrong?
Go for it if you have to.But be prepared to shorten up you shooting range a little bit.Make sure to get one that you can use a accessory to cock it for you.Trying to pull back one of the 150 to 180 lb pulls can be harder then pulling back a compound
|
RE: Right or Wrong?
Get that crossbow, and get huntin`!
Remember what Cardeer said though, get one with a cocking crank, or electric cocker, cause they can be a bear to cock manually. I don`t know a whole bunch about the different types available, but I was actually shooting one a couple days ago. It was a 10-point/x-2 model. Not knowing a lot about them, it did`nt seem so special to me, but the guys that were shooting it said that it was one of the best. It did have a manual cranking mechanism on it, and was easy to work. |
RE: Right or Wrong?
Coyote, have you seen or tried any of the devises that will hold your bow at full draw for you? It may be an option for you.
|
RE: Right or Wrong?
Not that hard if he buys the crank... for $150.00... Makes pulling those 175 pounders too easy.

RE: Right or Wrong?
Talk with the doc some more and clarify things. I would go with the crossbow with hesitating. I would think he would let you hunt if you took it easy. After all you are getting exercise and fresh air. Good luck.
|
RE: Right or Wrong?
What is the big deal? Go out and buy a crossbow and get huntin'!!
|
RE: Right or Wrong?
If the Doc says its OK to hunt, then there is nothing wrong with using a crossbow.
I think that disabled people should be allowed to use crossbows! Get well, and good luck! |
