Went scouting today with my boy

Went scouting with my boy this morning and we had a blast together. He will be 9 on the 27th this month and he knows the bush really well.
We were walking to one of my stands to check up on it and he caught a rub line along the edge of the trees and said dad look, well we scouted it out a little more and decided to move my stand over about 50 yards closer to the rub line.He asked if we can put 2 stands in the tree and i found 2 big trees together, looks like i will be taking my boy on his first bowhunt in a treestand. He said that he is really looking forward to it,just me and you eh dad.
He really enjoys fishing to and i cant leave the house without him, like i want to anyways.NOT:)

That sound's good extreme nothing like taking the kid's along, and introducing them to the hunting part of thier heritage.

You guys must be having a blast. My little guy is almost two and he loves animals (almost too much). He knows deer, bear, coyote, moose and a bunch of others. I'm not sure how he'll react once he understands that daddy kills these animals but I think he be fine judging by how he lkes to stomp bugs.lol I can't wait to take my little guy and teach him the trade. I wish the two of you a great season. Good luck:)

That is what it is all about. Keep up the good work and the one on one family time will pay off. Can't think of a better way to spend time with my kids. My oldest boy is only 5 but he has the camo and everything all set to go. I am toying with the idea of taking him out this year but we will have to see. He may still be a little young. Can't wait until we can go together though.

Cowboy, I started taking my son to the woods when he was 4.

In the end we pretty much only took a walk in the woods to eat our lunch but i am laying the foundation for the future. This will be his 3rd year going with me. I usually get up early to bowhunt, then go back to camp and get him mid morning to do some small game hunting and deer scouting.

I have 3 kids - boy (6) girl (5) and boy (2). They love Animal Planet but they also love going to Cabelas and watching hunting shows. All 3 of them had to watch me skin my deer last year and I had to chase them away from the table where i was butchering it at so i had room to work.

Thanx for the nice comments guys.Ya it is great and very rewarding. In a couple of years my boy will be better in the woods then me.
I started taking him in the woods when he was 4 i think and he can already identify deer tracks, bear tracks and others,he recognises scrapes and rubs and the principals behind them.
2 years ago i taught him how to gut out a deer(didn't like the smell--lol).I got it during rifle season and he was sitting right beside me when i got it,talk about excited[:-]
Forgot to mention, did you ever meet a 9 year old who can skin out a deer(with help of course)
Heres a little humour----------he said yesterday on the scouting trip---someday dad when your old and cant hunt alone,i'll pick you up if mom says it o.k and take you hunting, cause were buddies right(tears in eyes)

You have a 5 year old squirrel? How long do they usually live? Just givin' you a hard time. :D

I think it's great that you guys/gals take your kids along hunting/fishing. I had some friends while growing up whose dads would go hunting but never take them along. I thought about all the good times I had hunting with dad and couldn't imagine being left behind to lose all those great experiences/memories. I feel that my dad and I are much closer today than we would have been without our time together on the lake and in the field. Keep up the good work!

My Boy is 14. Been taking him bowhunting since he was 9. I would hang a stand about 8 feet up right under mine on the same tree. After I got him all belted in I would continue up the tree. I only took him early season when it was warm and only made him stay as long as he wanted to. I never saw a deer when he was with me but I cherish every day we went together. (He couldn't sit still). If taking him with me at a young age guaranteed me I would see no deer, I would take him every day.

I tip my hat to you for getting your kid involved. I have a nine-year old nephew, and I get him out in the woods whenever I can, if his dad doesn't beat me to the punch.

That said, please, please, do the world a favor. That kid is only nine so he can be taught. Please wash his mouth out with soap every time his says, "eh". Do that so if he ever comes to America people don't roll around on the ground and point at him while he talks, eh? Arggh, now I said it! I'm going for the soap. That's absolutely the most irritating expression in the nonlanguage.

Hey guys, and gals I haven't posted in a looong time but nothing gets me fired up like topics concerning our kids. I have an 8 year old daughter that was recently diagnosed with type (1) diabetes via a trip to ICU for a week. She has been hunting with me since she was 4, and loves every second of it. Last season on opening day we hunted a great little bow stand of ours, and she was getting a little tired of waiting so I figured I would do a little spot and stalk to make things a little more exciting. Well I let my bow down, put on my pack, and was three steps down about to sling her rifle over my shoulder and what walks out of the trees 35 yards away but a nice old doe. I scramble back up in the stand only to find her with her head in her shirt flailing her arms in some goofy kid way. I call to her 1,2,3,4 times finally she's like "What Daddy?" I say "theres a doe right there get your gun ready" I load the rifle set it up on the rail and before I can say "now relax" BOOM she pounded that doe. Waaaaaay Cool as the saying goes. Later during the season she managed to get her first buck (1) shot 101 yards. Now she thinks she's the great white hunter. Her brother will be two this month. I can't wait to get him started too. So keep up the good work parents these kind of posts make us Dads smile.

Great Topic Ex, and to all the others that get their children involved and or youngsters, I tip my hat to you. I do everything with my sons. Jess my oldest is 3 and he started shed hunting with me on my backpack when he could first walk in his first year. He scouts/glasses with me almost every evening I go out right now. I even videod him for about 20 minutes last summer at 2 years old calling a cow elk into 75 yards. He makes a great cow call with his voice. He hunted with me last fall at 2.5 and watched me "miss" a nice buck. Oh well it was a great learning experience for him, "daddy doesnt always bring home a buck everytime out".... My youngest son is 1 and loves to "pet" the headmounts in the house... and I plan on having him strapped in a backpack come next spring while shed hunting.

keep em in the mountains, it keeps em off the streets!
