Tobacco in the stand?

I have have heard people say you should not smoke while your in a treestand. I have also heard of people smoking while they shot a deer. Does it really matter if you do? Personally, I chew coppenhagen snuff, anyone think thats a bad idea while bow hunting? Let me know what ya think.

I can not believe someone would dream of smoking in the woods. Smokers cant smell themselves, but I can smell them a mile off and a deers nose is better than mine. I go through a painstaking process to stay sent free. I never take my clothes indoors, get dressed outside etc. It has made a big difference in my hunting since doing so.

I can honostly say that I have never seen a deer on or off stand while I had a cigarette lit. I have had deer approach within 5 minutes of putting one out, but never with one lit up. (my goal this year is to quit by Oct 1st!!!)

One guy that used to hunt with us almost always had a cigar in his mouth, he saw lots of deer but he moved around alot.

My brother-in-law generally had a pinch of Copenhagen in and he has gotten his fair share of deer over the years.

I take some Red Man with me from time to time during rifle season but never in bow season.

Tobacco, heck yes the more you smoke or chew the better. I also recommend lots and lots of cologne, I prefer Old Spice myself. And if I can I find a big pile of dog doo and step in it just before walking to my hunting spot.

Seriously, any scent you bring into the woods that isn't normally there will effect deers natural behavior and its not going to be for the better 99% of the time.

Hey TurkeyHunter, I can't say I never seen deer in the woods when I smoked but I've been a exsmoker for six years and I can't tell you how clueless I was on the smell of tobacco I carried, or how much more game I see now.

I chew in the woods you know cherry and apple its normal for deer to smell that but i dont think smokeing would be a good idea. Although my uncles friend kills one every year and he smokes

I dip and always spit in a bottle with a lid on it. Don't want to take any chances.

I smoke during the off season, and chew while on stand during the hunting season, my brother smokes all the time and I see and harvest more deer, and he will never learn,, I personally don't think it makes a huge difference, but like see lots of deer, so I will not smoke on stand.

Are you old enough to chew? Dont get caught on the bus, deep trouble. I got suspendid for it when I was younger. Or just learn to gut it like the real men do.

I asked this a little while back about snuff and didnt get hardly any responces. I was wonderin if some of the new flavors like wintergreen, mint, berry, and like the new skoal apple would act as an curiosity scent.

interesting thought! if thats true, you know everyone in here is going to start chewing

Carpmaster 07-14-2004 09:31 PM

RE: Tobacco in the stand?

I would think for one, that natural flavors wouldnt bother deer one bit, and that using a SPITTER would help majorly, plus if your a minor quit while you can and dont get caught in school!!!

They will smell you a mile away. Anyone who stinks in their stand and sees "lots" of deer would see 10 times more if they controlled their scent.

RE: Tobacco in the stand?

I would assume that it makes a difference. I always have a dip when I hunt "in a tree stand down by the river." (opposed to "in a van down by the river." -Farley) This one spot I have is on the bank of a river which actually puts my stand over water so I can spit into the river undetected, and it works out great if I have to take a leak. I usually don't dip if I'm not hunting the river spot.

Well i would say it is always a bad idea. Fu#kin gross. Anyway i knew a guy that said that he was smoking and chewing on his stand and he still shot a deer. That was rifle but still. I, first of all dont smoke or chew but that is pretty bad if you cant hold off for a few days in a tree stand. As far as spittin in the river. How high are you. That still leaves a lot of scent. especially if it is windy.

RE: Tobacco in the stand?

I smoked cigs on stand for years, killed a bunch of deer, with a few wallhangers here and there.I would kidd my hunting buddies that the deer actually prefer Salems over Marlboros.
I'm pretty good at making excuses for doing things I know is bad for me.I don't have a clue how many deer busted me because of smoking that I did'nt know about.
Right know I'm in my eighth week of being smoke free, and after smoking for 25 years,it has'nt been easy. But,each day,it is getting a little easier. Not much, just a little.
So,Hopefully, I'll be able to see what I've been missing this year...Bob

RE: Tobacco in the stand?

I have smoked and dipped over the years and I really don't think dipping would effect the deer at all. Heck cope tastes like dirt anyway so I wouldn't be surprised if the deer walked up and asked for a pinch:D. On the otherhand I can't imagine smoking while on stand is too good. I know during rifle season some of my friends smoke but they are on powerlines and the deer are pretty far away. The only time I ever saw a deer while smelling like smoke was a few years back. We were sitting at camp and I was in my hunting gear (done for the weekend) and I was smoking away. My friend talked me into going out one last time. We got into the woods and I didn't even feel like climbing a tree so I strapped on my stand and sat in it at the bottom, heck I could even smell myself. No more than an hour later a doe and her fawn walked up to me within 10 yards and never knew I was there. In retrospect I think wind played a huge role. This may be why some people see deer while smoking and others don't. If you play the wind right deer have a hard time smelling anything. IMHO.

RE: Tobacco in the stand?

If ur hunting the wind then why should smoking be a concern? You should be set up so the wind isn't blowing your smoke in the direction ur hunting. ???

I usually hold out for a smoke until midday anyhow.

RE: Tobacco in the stand?

I quit smoking nearly 30 years ago after watching my uncle and grandfather both waste away and die with emphesyma. Dumping the cigs was a cakewalk compared to quitting snuff.

After all those years of dipping and chewing, and repeatedly trying to quit, I've finally broken the habit. A store by the range started selling Smokey Mountain non-tobacco snuff (cherry, mint and wintergreen are pretty good ;)). I started taking a dip of that every time I wanted a dip. Just being able to have that dip in the lip got me thru the nicotine withdrawal. It's been 5 months now and I don't even do the Smokey Mountain any more. Still have a twinge of wanting a dip now and then, but it's not that overpowering NEED I used to have.

There is no question that getting off snuff was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, but I did it. Quit. You'll feel a lot better. and think of how much huntin' stuff you can buy with the money you save!:D

Same here, helps keep me on my toes when i get bored, i dont spit on the ground. My uncle use to smoke in the stand all the time, and he never had a problem harvesting a nice buck or a mature doe. If u play the wind and they cant smell ya, you could smell like an amonia factory and the deer wont smell ya if your downwind.

I killed several deer over the years while smoking. I don't think that deer associate the smell of smoke with danger. Human scent, however, is a problem. But you know what, even with all the carbon, charcoal, cover scents, and all, if you play the wind right, like you should, you could not shower for a week, and in theory, it shouldn't matter.

I met an old Polish guy up in Maine at a hunting camp. He smoked all the time. He always shot a good deer too. I asked him about it and he said the cigarrette smoke helped him keep track of the wind. Whatever direction the smoke was drifting, he just looked the other way.

Too bad that skoal doesn't make a doe-in-heat flavored, then you guys that dip would really have an excuse to chew on stand.

I'll just stick with my Marlboro "dominant buck" cigs.

I've done it both ways ,
smoked on stand some times , and stayed as scent reduced as I possibly could on others . I didn't notice an appreciable difference in sightings of deer . I quit smoking in January after 30 , and I used to dip too , but I can't reccomend either as a cover scent . ;)
