you're right they(moultrie feeders) does use a really cheap camera. I live north of Brownstown. |
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks

|
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
I used to go when it was a little shop. Now its a monster. It's always to busy for me. I usually just go get what I need then leave.
I'm pretty good friends with the family, somtimes they will let us shoot after hours out at the platform. |
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
Nice pics guys here is a tip dont over check your camera and stay scent free so you dont scare deer away from your camera:D
|
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
I am in my second year of using my trail cams. I make sure they are pointed away from the sun, remove any foliage that may trip the camera, and make sure it is not to high on the tree. I like to set my cam at 2 pics a minute. It allows me to get a good look at the bucks racks from two different angles. I also just found out that putting it directly on a trail can be bad. I have a picture of half a buck's ear, and six point visible on that half an ear. I sure wish I would have set it back a bit and got a pic of the whole deer.
|
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
I have a cheapo stealth cam. I have been putting duct tape on the sensor on my food plots and almost all of the deer picture get center shots. Before taping you would get half deer pictures. With only 24 pictures per roll of film its worth narrowing the sensor.
|
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
That sounds like a great idea. I will have to try it, as I also have the stealth cams.
|
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
i need to get a game cam!
|
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
We have 5 cheap Stealth cams & one cuddieback digital. We replaced the web strap with tie wire. This makes it real hard to find the cams , as we have camoflaged them up. Thieves have to look directly at the camera to see it.
|
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
Great idea with the tie wire. I think you are right. That thick black strap really stands out against the lighter bark of the trees.

RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
I am having problems with my Stealth Cam. it is the low end 35 mm model.
I am getting a lot of pictures of nothing. It seems like the sensor is so delayed in taking the picture, that the deer is already gone before the picture is taken. I wanted to test it myself to see so I walked about 10 ft in front of the camera along the trail keeping a steady pace. I almost got out of view to the side and I thought the camera was not working so I stopped. As soon as I stopped, it took the picture. It seems as though it would have let me walk right on by had I not stopped. What is wrong with this camera? The only pictures that I got are where the deer is within a few feet of the camera or walking right up to it. Here is one neat photo I did get, but again, it let him walk right up to the camera before snapping the photo. You can see that his head is right in the bottom corner where the time is printed. ![]() |
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
I was having problems with my Stealth Cam digital. I had been putting the camera out every night for over a month with no pictures. I finally tested it in a dark closet and literally had to wave my hand right in front of it numerous times before it would flash. There must be something wrong with the motion sensor. I sent it back to the company yesterday and asked for a replacement. Since this is my first trail camera, I thought I was doing something wrong. Talk about being frustrated!
|
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
goosie--
It seems like part of the problem is your cam is set up too high. Try putting it lower to the ground, this way the sensor will catch their legs moving instead of their body. RBBH |
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
I agree - Camera is to high - pointing down way too much. Drop it to about 3.5 ft for best results

RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
Wow, such great tips here. I myself now have 2 Leaf River Trail Scans, model MC-1. I think they are fantastic, and with the Cannon Sure Shot Owl camera they use it takes very nice and clear pics. As far as the human theft thing, the sign thing is the best idea I've seen, as my father always told me "A lock only keeps an honest man out!" If someone wants that camera bad enough, or let's face it, NEEDS it bad enough to keep from getting busted, they ARE going to get it one way or another. As for bear problems, my friends and I use a rather different technique, and I hope ya'll don't think I'm crazy. We stay as scent free as possible around the bait sites, and as far as the bear stopper goes.........we use Deep Woods OFF! I know, it sounds nuts, but they might give it a lick, and we even have one cam with a couple tooth marks on it, but as most of us here can attest to, at some point wiping an arm or hand across our mouth when it's hot, OFF tastes NASTY!...lol That's my only tip, and IF I get a pic of the bruiser living right behind my house, I'll be sure to post his pic here, as I'm pretty sure he'd push 150 class.

help with camera
I have just got a stealth cam and am having trouble with it. The past two weeks the same film has been in there, but it's not taking any pictures. The film is in the right way, but I think that the film is not being caught by the camera to take pictures. Can you give me any advice?
|
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
Thanks for the advice guys. I will try it again lower.
|
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
Dbernin, Is the camera turned on? It is easy to forget to turn it on sometimes & maybe on standby. Does the picture count read 0 or E? If E, then the film isn't properly loaded. walk up to it & see if it makes your picture. If it dosen't work call Stealth.

RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
How much of the sensor are you guys covering up on your stealth cams?
|
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
I don't cover any of the sensor. In my experience - the field of veiw with the Stealth camera is very wide, and while some of my deer are in the perimeter of the picture - most are reasonably centered.
I'd suggest that if the picture you are trying to take is less than 10 ft from the camera - then maybe you would try covering the sensor some. |
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
make sure the LED reads "0" and not "E" after you load the film or you are going to have a blank role of film developed. |
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
To get the E off you have to reload the film. Sometimes you may have to pull more out or rewind it a little.

RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
I have been using the "cheap" Stealths for a couple of years know, I love them. They are very afordable. Couple of points I can donate are:
1. If in bear country use a hot pepper on the outside to distract them from eating your camera, this usually helps. 2. Weeds and sunlight are not the only things that will set your camera off, flys also do. Use alittle bug spray on the sensor lense. 3. Aim camera to the north. 4. If over bait, 1 picture every 15-20 min. Trails, 1 pic. every minute. 5. No sense locking the camera to the tree, you just waste money, it will be gone anyway. 6. Deer are not 6 ft. tall, keep camera low, 2 feet max. height. |
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
By the way the camera will not take any pictures if it reads "E" and it will not have any sort of number on it either, if it says "E" that means the film is not loaded, period. You have to reload it.
Trust me, I go thru between 60-80 rolls of film in my 6 Stealths a year. Good luck !!;) |
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
CrabClaw10: What do you mean by "it will not have any sort of number on it either"?
My StealthCam loads right and the test coverage area is great...however, when I went to retrieve it yesterday all I saw on the screen was a 1. Counter also read 1. There is no way that only one thing went by the camera in a week. I have it set on a very busy trail crossing. When I rewound the film it seemed like it was rewinding more than just one photo. I am going to set it off on purpose to see if the darned thing will advance past one..... |
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
Do any of you have problems with constantly getting rodents and nusiance animals in your pics, like raccoons, squirrels, and crows? I've turned the sensitivity down on mine, and I'm still getting a lot of pics of things I don't want or need to see.

I have Leaf River Trail Scan cameras, and they have a sensitivity dial right on them.

6. Deer are not 6 ft. tall, keep camera low, 2 feet max. height. |
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
I have had problems with grass adn weeds. The reason for this is because the sun will heat up the tips of the grass or weeds, causing there to be enough heat and movement to set off the camera. Putting the camera in a shady area really helps.

RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
Im amazed at the quality of the photos ive got off my stealth cam. For a cheap camera it takes great photos. However mines a pain in the rear to set up using the test area. Always seems to shoot to the right. But one of hte photos it took of 3 does clear across the pond I had it on. At least 30 yards away. Also got 2 nice 8 points in one photo drinking at the pond. Sure wish I had a scanner!
Ive decided im hooked on these game camera and need a digital, any suggestions :D |
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
I have 2 Camtrakkers and 2 Stealth Cams. All work great. The Camtrakker are much nicer but cost more. I have had a few problems with the Stealth Cam not catching the whole Deer ,but they are good for the most part. 4 C cell batteries will run the camtrakker for 3 months. 8 AA in the stealths last 2 weaks. Camtrakkers have better camo and lock to the tree. I know if they want it the can get it ,but at least they cant just walk away with it. My tips for both cameras are not to waste your film over a bait pile but rather a trail leading up to it . This will keep you from burning a whole roll on 1 or 2 animals. Since you can not lock the stealth cam as well I would try and hide them by using a hot glue gun and some fake leafs. You can get the fake leafs, ferns, ets. at wal mart. Glue they to the camera leaving the lens and so forth exposed. If you leave your batteries in the stealth cam past 3 weak you will not be able to rewind your film, so take fresh ones with you.

RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
PAhunter, I just got back to this forum. What I mean by "no number " is that if the cameras readout says "E" thats all it will say, it has no room for a different number. The only number that will be displayed is the minute interval (to the left) and the number of pictures you want to take in that given amount of time (1-9).;)
|
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
BOWFANATIC, I see we still have a sense of humor. I like keeping the camera low because I am a leg man. Actually I get better results lower to the ground (and if the camera is too low I can still tell if its a buck or doe by the luggage even if I cant see their horns:D;)[:-])

RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
Could someone give me a tip on what is a good cam to get ? been looking and it is hard to pick!!!!
|
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
I would go with a cheap stealth cam to start off. I had mine, broke it, and sent it in (1 year warranty) and recieved an upgraded model for nothing. Thats pretty good customer service. I recieved it about 2 1/2 weeks after I sent the broken one in. They take good pictures too. The only thing you might have to do is tape the sensor to narrow the coverage area.

RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
I don't understand it. I took out my stealth cam a couple of weeks ago and set it up in an area where I know deer travel. I set the camera about 3-4 feet off the ground and placed it looking south across a regularly used deer trail. The place where I set the cam is in complete shade all day. I trimmed up all the limbs and overhanging branches from in front of the stealth cam. I then set the cam to test mode and walked around in front and down the trail to see if the camera was working correctly, which it seemed to be, so I left. I went out and picked up the film yesterday and was excited to see that there was 17 pics taken so I rushed it to the 1 hour photo. When I went to pick up the film I discovered that ONCE AGAIN there are randomly taken pics of nothing. There were two pics of cows crossing down the trail (taken perfectly cow in center of photo), but then there was 15 pics of absolutely nothing. I just can't figure out this camera. I've tried and tried but I can't seem to keep it from taking random pics. Some of the pics were taken at night from 10:32 every two minutes until 10:38 and then some were taken in the morning starting at 10:48 until 10:52. I just don't get it.[:@] What am I doing wrong??????
|
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
John Deer , How far from the trail was the camera set up? The closer the narrower the sensor cone. I usuall place mine 15-20 ft off the trail. We have 5 stealth's, 1 cuddeback & 1 leaf river (on the way):)
|
RE: Game cam Tips and Tricks
It was set up about 15 feet off the trail. I thought that since the two pics of the cows turned out fine and the cows were in the center of the picture that if something was setting off the camera it should have been in the picture also.
