RE: Is there ANYONE on here that will absolutely NOT shoot a DOE?
Every time you step into the woods with your bow you are entering the "management process" whether you like it or not. Every time you decide to shoot or not to shoot, you are making a management decision...

RE: Is there ANYONE on here that will absolutely NOT shoot a DOE?
i think the biggest thing is when i lived up north when we went hunting it meant food for the a good part of the year. if we were able to HARVEST a doe we did so. not that i dont agree with teh old timers.. hell i was raised by my grand father and father when it comes to hunting. they were as about as old timers get. but when it came down to it the more deer we had the more meat we ate that year.
:) but either way i dont disagree with it and the comment that was made about people having opinions and not getting flamed about it is true i just want to say i am a member of quite a few forums and this one seems to be the most mature one yet. as far as i have seen. |
RE: Is there ANYONE on here that will absolutely NOT shoot a DOE?
ok heres what i do i shoot the first thing that walks by, unless it really small, to have meat in the freezer then i work on getting a buck and i usually on average take 2-3 doe a year

RE: Is there ANYONE on here that will absolutely NOT shoot a DOE?
I hunt with guys that are both ways. Some will only shoot bucks and some are happy with anything. I myself am in the latter group, I would just as soon shoot a doe as I would a buck.

I will shoot a doe if I have an antlerless tag and there is a bunch of them otherwise I'll leave them for seed.I will not take a doe over a legal buck if I had to choose just one.

RE: Is there ANYONE on here that will absolutely NOT shoot a DOE?
I've been hunting for 26 years. I have never shot a doe, probably never will. Why? I am a buck hunter. I don't really care all that much for venison. I don't mind a bit telling my friends that I didn't get a deer last year. I don't care what others think about my hunting success. I hunt for my own personal enjoyment, not out of competition or to feel macho. I missed a trophy class 11pt. last year. My arrow deflected off a branch and just cut belly hair off. I'm not mad about it, I'm thankful for the experience. Anyone that says venison tastes better than beef is stating a wild opinion. Venison tastes like burnt hair to me. Where I hunt and live there are families that put ten does a year in the freezer. They can have mine then, too. I have enough challenge just getting out a few times a year without worrying about shooting a bunch of does that I won't eat. Hunting for me is a quest to take a trophy mature buck, anything else that walks by is as safe as a kitten around me. If anyone out there wants to shoot a hundred does a year, go right ahead, it's your choice, you have my blessing. Until it becomes ethical and legal to shoot does and just let them rot, I will let them pass.

Yes, silentassassin, you can make deer taste good, but at what cost and time expense? If you spend the time and money (spices, oils, marinades etc.) you can make deer taste good (mask the flavor). I buy local beef by the side off of a farmer friend. I just add a little pepper and toss it on the grill and the flavor and juice is incredible. I don't have the time to butcher my own deer so it does cost money. Money I would rather spend on mouthwatering prime beef that takes no prep to make it edible. I do eat deer by the way, I just don't pack my freezer with does. I make jerky out of them. (when I do get one). I hunt only for mature bucks now, and have no regrets when I don't get one.

I have never hunted bear, coyotes, or shot an opossum, skunk or coon. Like I said before Atlas, if you have never done these things, then your point is backed up. If what you say is true, then you have every right in the world to say what you did. Didn't mean to get under your skin, you are just the first hunter that I have ever been associated with that hasn't shot a coyote or two when given the chance, or any other little varmints that many people shoot. No harm meant. Hope you have a good weekend. |
