Is an IBO speed of 290 any good?

I would say that it would fall on the low end of the medium range. Today's medium IBO ratings are normally between 290 and 310 fps. Anything less than 290 IBO is usually considered a relatively slow design while anything over 310 fps is usually considered fast.

If it can't hit what your aiming at then I would consider it worthless. Speed is very very very overrated. Do yourself a favor and don't worry about something as trivial as speed, get a properly spined arrow with a good FOC, get it tuned better than a fiddle and sight in at different distances.

Doc I have to say I agree. Im looking at the Ole PSE Fire Flite sitting in the corner, that one killed some deer, and the Ole High Country Sniper that shot my biggest buck to date. A very respectible 13 point. Slow bows, extremely slow bows by todays standards. They did it. They would be worthless to anyone but me. I've had many Hoyt's, Matthews, Ect. They are the only two that will never leave me. They will never be shot again but they are still able to do what a hunting bow needs to do.

290 fps is not a speed burner like some of todays top end bows but with good shot placement it will be very lethal.
Also IBO speeds should be taken with a grain of salt. It is good for comparison but I can't think of a single person who hunts with a set up consistant with IBO specs.

I would say the low end but then again that dosn't mean a whole lot in my book. Speed is great but it's not everything. If you liek the way the bow shoots & it works for you then use it. the deer won't know how fast the arrow was
