When and where

When and where did the term SLOB buck come from? I have heard them called a lot of things but never SLOB's????????? I have been reading the term in several posts in the last couple of weeks and wondered where it came from or if it is suppose to stand for something. To me it sounds stupid and derrogatory but I didn't know if SLOB was an acronym for something, a new term, or an old term that I am just now hearing. [:'(]

RE: When and where

I was wondering the same thing....clicked on a post titled something about finding the slobs and I thought I was about to read about poachers!

silentassassin 06-24-2004 09:38 AM

RE: When and where

Yea, that's what makes it sound derrogatory to me. I guess I just don't understand why out of all the terms there are out there that are used to refer to big deer, why people want to refer to them as slobs?????????????

Rack-attack 06-24-2004 10:07 AM

RE: When and where

why people want to refer to them as slobs?????????????
Because thats what they are...........LOL:D

I use that term - I think it comes from fishing - like a big fat, monster bellied, huge bass.

Yea, that's what makes it sound derrogatory to me
I say SLOB in the most respectfull way.........SLOBS deserve ones respect.....:D:D

I thought that was a hawg? Or a toad?

adams 06-24-2004 11:12 AM

RE: When and where

I read that smae post and thought for sure he had nailed a poacher or tresspasser. I've heard plenty of names for big deer but never slob.

I think of a slob deer as one that has advanced CWD. Kinda like a mad cow. stumbling along and druleing.

Jason N 06-24-2004 11:21 AM

RE: When and where

I can't figure out why you would call something you like, respect, hold dear to you, etc a slob....especially when the word is most commonly referred to when describing an idiot, bum, messy, sloppy, etc. It doesn't even fit!

Stump_MN_Hunter 06-24-2004 11:30 AM

RE: When and where

It's just a word to describe a buck. No need to get bent out of shape over it fellas.

Arthur P 06-24-2004 11:39 AM

RE: When and where

This is a slob.

This is a nice buck (Texas buck, naturally;))

Honestly? I see absolutely NO resemblance.

adams 06-24-2004 11:41 AM

The both have a nice rack;)

No,no,no. The both have a big rack. This is what I meant to say.[:-]

RE: When and where

Among other things, Slob is actually a deragatory term rival gangs use to describe members of the BLOODS gang. Just FYI. Nothing will ever replace "Monster" buck or my personal favorite, "Daddy Rabbit".

silentassassin 06-24-2004 12:24 PM

RE: When and where

Acceptable terms: IMO
Hawg
Stud
Monster
Thumper
Gollarator
Bullwinkle and
Daddy Rabbitt

Terms that should be immediately discontinued:
SLOB[:'(]

Wolfen..

"Daddy Rabbit"????? How could you call such a creature that "bad" name??

Couldn't resist. j/k

SLOB
LOL........:D

I will continue to use the word SLOB......;)

A perfect description IMO of a Huge, Stinking, Neck Bulging Freak of Antlered Nature ripping up the woods.:D

"Daddy Rabbit"........LOL[:-]:)

Now thats disrespectfull to a Slob....

Antler Eater 06-24-2004 12:33 PM

RE: When and where

What about terms like toad or pig?

silentassassin 06-24-2004 12:38 PM

RE: When and where

What about terms like toad or pig?
Absolutely!

Feel free to add any others that I have omitted, to this list. Just please leave the term slob to describe those that make an unethical "attempt" at hunting[:'(][:@][&:];)

RE: When and where

I just heard the term used like that when I went trout fishing. My cousin is a guide and he referred to some of the trout as slobs. I don't particularly like the term. I wish that folks would use a different term in the titles of posts, that way nobody gets confused.

NEWSHOOTER 06-24-2004 01:16 PM

Gollarator

LOL...SA, what the heck is a Gollarator? :D My personal favorites are Monster, Whopper, & Hawg.

RE: When and where

I like monster bucks, I don't like slob bucks. The term slob is just too connected in my mind to an embarassment of a hunter to tag on to a great buck.

Buckslayer1 06-24-2004 02:38 PM

RE: When and where

The only slobs I know are the ones that break into my hunting camp.

lol...It's a local term that I took a liking to. I don't know how it's supposed to be spelled but it seems to fit.

RE: When and where

Just a descriptive term.

I have heard the term used a few times. In the context used, it seemed that the term was being used to describe an usually big deer. I have heard shooters also say they saw or downed a "pig" or a "bruiser."

Big buck or big doe will do the job just fine. :)

Rack-attack 06-24-2004 02:57 PM

RE: When and where

LOL...SA, what the heck is a Gollarator?
I am guessing a cross between a Gorilla and an Allagator..:eek::eek:

In other words a SLOB;)

RE: When and where

I have heard the term used alot recently.

Another one I have heard alot in the past year or so is a "slammer"

Neither slob or slammer bother me at all, but I don't use them terms either.[&:]

thundermug 06-24-2004 03:07 PM

RE: When and where

Where I came from we called them "SLAB" as in "that is one huge slab of meat!" whether it was fish or what-have-you, any kind of meat when it is BIG is considered a SLAB.

Look in the dictionary for "slob" and then "slab".

IMHO it all started when someone heard the word and thought they heard it differently or they heard it from an uneducated person. Take for instance, when I spent my youth at my Uncle Franks farm. I asked him what the "H" was for on the 2nd shifter and he said "high" then I asked about the "L" if it meant "low" and he said yes. Then I asked about the "S" and he replied "safety" but he pronounced it "safe-et-ee". He could read but....God bless his soul! this may be off subject but I do miss my Aunt Cleos cooking!!!!

Where talking about the term "SLOB" I hope it's off subject!:D

Just the other day I recognized the growing popularity of this word used in association with big bucks. I know what some of you are saying, it doesn't fit! I agree! I think it's stupid but that's because there was an infomercial with this narrator trying to be cool, calling all the fish caught on the new lure "slobs!" I guess that ruined it for me cuz the guy was a dork! Whatever you call it, I’m after it!

BOWFANATIC 06-24-2004 07:03 PM

RE: When and where

IMHO it all started when someone heard the word and thought they heard it differently or they heard it from an uneducated person.

Nope! As RA stated it was mostly used to describe a "wallhanger" of a fish and then eventually included anything that would fall into the "wallhanger" category.

Maybe it's just a "yankee" thing?

Now ya'll stop givin us crap bout it , ya hear!

RE: When and where

SLOB SLOB SLOB...thats my favorite word to describe a SLOB buck...go to www.bloodbro.com...SLOB is the official word there. wheres bukmastr, he can back me up on teh word SLOB. Daddy Rabbit? that makes him sound like some little shat of a buck. SLOB sounds big, all rutted up and ready to breed some does and whoop on some puny little runt bucks. Daddy Rabbits are the little bucks SLOBS push around. Thumper? makes it sound likea ruffed grouse or rabbit. Gollarator? i havent the faintest idea. sounds almost like something you'd call an Arab terrorist. I think this daddy rabbit business if from you southern boys. Up North here, our bucks are a quite bigger, thus requiring a special name for them. SLOB.

acceptable terms

SLOB
monster
pig
hawg
ol' joker(david blanton uses that one alot whenhe hunts Texas)
Stud
bullwinkle
giant
etc.

terms that should be eliminated from common usage
DADDY RABBIT
Gollarator

Come on yankees, use the word SLOB everywhere! Say it loudly and proudly!

slayer

RE: When and where

I have to admit that everytime I hear the words Hawg or Pig in reference to a buck.....I just have to see it!!!!! That to me, means just an absolute monster with some really good head gear.

In other words a SLOB
Actually it started as Golly Whopper and transfored to Gollarator.

I don't care who's website it's on and I have never heard of the people on the website that you listed, I still think it sounds stupid. JMO

A SLOB buck WTF is that a big fat sloppy buck that is careless and could be killed by anyone? That's what I think of when I hear the word. Anyway just venting a little and voicing my opinion on the usage of the word.

RE: When and where

;) I called my 80 year old dad on this subject and he told me unflinchingly that the term SLOB was relayed to him years ago by his dad. It meant SLY, LEERY, OL', BOY. He also said the BOY was often replaced by BUCK or BASS. Just relaying history.

That's why I asked if it was supposed to be an acronym. As an acronym it becomes more pallatable to me. However, using the term slob in an of itself to project admiration and distinction onto something is kind of an oxymoron;)

Hey! Dont'cha know there's a rule on this forum against using words with more than three syllables? Take that stuff over to the tech forum where it belongs![>:]
