The citation information was from the wardens office. Can't really confirm whether or not they were feeding me a line, but for some reason I don't think they were. I asked specifically about the Haul Road and archery hunters. They mentioned more citations were issued to rifle hunters in the area than bowhunters. The main citation was shooting animals with firearms inside the corridor. I also talked to truckers on a daily basis this last season about where the majority of the hunters are at since it seemed fairly crowded north of pump 2. He said 2 or 3 trucks were down in the Toolik/Galbrath area between pumps 3 and 4, and the majority were north of pump 2, so I was hunting where the majority of the hunters were. Later in the year I spent several trips down around Toolik since that is where the bulk of the herd was.

Are you saying you get off on hunters losing their hunting rights? I've only heard statements like that from ARA's and anti-hunters, that's a first from somebody else that hunts. Guess there is a first for everything. Amazing.

btw, I doubt they were feeding you a line...then again who knows. I am sure you remember those damn GI's that got the hides back from there illegaly shot grizz, I just wonder how fast the paper trail makes it to FBK from Coldfoot-happyvalley! I hear ya on the rifle hunters but I think there is more to the madness. Also trying to get a conviction/citation without them actually seeing it happen is like asking god to dinner...it happens I am sure, but not very often! Wait, that goes to the 2nd hand knowledge..dang no wonder why so many more rifle hunters get hammered being they have game and the troopers can prove where it was shot....so much for telling them whats going on when they cant do anything to begin with!

Which is why I'm against more restrictions. It will only affect law abiding citizens. The same people that break the law will only have another that they know they can get away with.
There are hopefully other answers out there. I would rather see hunters come together and turn people in, such as both you and AK Nimrod have done in the past. Will it go anywhere? Who knows? I plan on taking video quite a bit down the highway. If I do see violations, I plan on reporting them and sending a copy of the tape included in the report.
I also plan on giving Greg Lavin a call and offering assistance directly from Prudhoe. If they are looking for a vehicle, or a group of hunters, or if there is information that can be passed south from here, than I would be willing to take the time to assist him. Only one road out of here.
This is one way that I think hunters can help clean up whatever slobs are out there. If they realize we aren't going to put up with it, maybe they'll think twice about it. There are other things that we have been doing besides what you have seen on here.

No tests required in WV. I will never be in favor of them.

Where's VC1111? I know you're lurking in the background somewhere! Put the gloves on pal!

This was a big topic bout a year ago, got a lot of attention, always does...Get ready for the year 2010!!!<img src=icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle>

I like the shooting test. I am also against more regulation. So that leaves me torn on this issue. I feel it is more dificult to become proficient with a bow than a rifle, so I guess i am going to have to support our AK laws that require it.

Kansas has no proficiency test requirements for bow or gun. I see no need for them. It is strictly an ethical thing for each individual. The best target shooter in the world can make a poor decision in the field and end up looking like a slob hunter. I only hope that we all learn from our own mistakes as well as those of our friends or ones we read about. There is no amount of regulations that can make up for bad decisions made in the heat of the moment. Keep a cool head and pass all marginal shots for your ablility.

I'd like to thank those that commented here. Thanks for keeping it civil.

It appears as if alot of people would like to see some test, others are falat out against it. I see pros and cons on each side. I happen to still like the idea.

If nothing else, I'd be willing to bet that even the people here that are against a test, would be OK with one if it was promoted and/or suggested by their local club or organization. Even if it was just a local test that was not handled by the state.

What would you think of hunter ed requiring proficiency testing for young hunters? Most older hunters are set in their ways it seems like, and don't feel the need to prove themselves. Heck, who is going to volunteer to require a WWII or Vietnam Veteran to prove that they can shoot a gun or bow before we let them hunt on American soil. It ain't gonna be me!
For our youngsters though, it might be a better idea just to get them started right. Most unethical hunters are either bred into it, or just never had the training and respect for animals. If we start em young and make it fun, nobody has anything to really lose. Nothing that I can think of at least!

I myself sat out a complete archery season one year after starting a new job because I didn't feel I was prepared, everyone has or is suppose to a certain degree of hunting ethics, everyone performs differently in a given situation we all need to know our own capabilities and not exceed them. NO MORE GOV. CONTROL!
