Baiting for hogs, need suggestions.
Last year, I took a 9 year old hog hunting in June (legal on private land in Florida). This is not the best month to hog hunt given the Florida heat but it is when we can work it out. Unfortunately, our property is not over-loaded w/ hogs and despite working hard for 4 hours, we did not even see a hog.
This year, I want to improve our odds and would appreciate your suggestions on what i can do to put this kid on a hog. We don't have feeders on the property but it is legal to bait hogs in florida. Club members have told me that dumping a bag of corn on the ground the day before will not draw the hogs, so i need to do something better, and probably a week or more in advance. Any ideas? thx |
RE: Baiting for hogs, need suggestions.
#1 Get a 5 gallon bucket with a lid , fill with corn , fill with water untill just about to the top , inch or 2 of dry corn , put lid on wait 10 to 14 days , now you have sour corn , a powerfull hog atractant . Another bait is molasas . My advise would be to put some out at nite , go before sunrise and put somemore out and wait , they'll come , if they are within a 1/2 mile or so .

Kind of a rip off of the above post, but several guys that I know soak corn in hawaiian punch before putting it out. Get enough of that stuff out there and play the wind right, and yall should be in business.

RE: Baiting for hogs, need suggestions.
same as above with the sour corn but dont just dump it in a pile on the ground the hogs will eat it all and move on.
The best way is to ge a post hole digger and put in a few holes fill the holes with the soured corn then back fill with dirt. The hogs will keep coming back till all the corn is gone. |
RE: Baiting for hogs, need suggestions.
Almost the same as above, except we take a 5 gallon bucket and fill it with corn add a cup of sugar and 3 beers. What this does is it sours the corn using the yeast from the beer which feeds on the sugar. Take a post hole digger and dig as deep as you can. fill the hole and cover with dirt. We did this and had a hole that was more than waste deep and 6 ft. in diameter....just try it. It WILL work.

Some great suggestions, thank you. Just a few questions for clarification.
Should I pour the sour corn into the hole a week before I plan to hunt the area or will they find it if i do it the night before. Is the purpose of covering the corn with dirt to keep them from eating it all in one night? I have lots of cows on the property. Will they eat the sour corn or should I run a strand of barb wire? Maybe the hole/dirt will keep the cows out?? |
RE: Baiting for hogs, need suggestions.
Like many have said, the sour corn works great. You can also try some "Hog Wild". It is usually carried at most feed stores. Just follow the directions on the bag and get an arrow nocked. If the conditions are right on your property you will have all the hogs you can handle in short order. Hogs will come of breading age in about six months and will usually have two liters a year with as many as 10 piglets. LOL

If a cow comes to the corn, just let it walk. Nah, a blunt usually will get their attention in a hurry. :D The corn buried in the hole works great. |
RE: Baiting for hogs, need suggestions.
Well, based on your advice, I purchased a 50lb bag of corn and a garbage can from Home depot. Poured the corn in and covered it with one inch of water. The next day, the water was absorbed by the corn so I added a little more. The receipe has been cooking in my driveway, absorbing the florida heat. By Saturday, it will be 6 days old and I will put at least half out (in the post holes) and let the other half brew for another week. This will allow me to begin attracting them to the area and can then replenish the source the day before I plan to hunt.
It should make things much easier and ensure the kid gets a hog, but hog hunting on my property is never easy. I am anxious to see how this works. Last year, we poured molasis, corn and Hog Wild in the area and never saw a hog. I think the problem was, we poured the bait out the night before we hunted the area and the hogs did not have time to find it. Hopefully the above strategy solves this problem. |

If you want the hogs to find the goodies faster, smear some peanut butter on the brush around the area you've baited.

Fill a coffee can with corn and pour beer over it. Let it sit in the sun for about 5 days. Then bury it up to the lid in your hog area. They'll tear it up.

Sounds crazy but a couple of rugs soaked in diesel fuel and wrapped around the base of a tree works very well. not so much fuel that they are dripping but wrapeed around the tree and then sprayed lightly. they rub up against said tree and it keeps bugs off of them. they will flat dig a trench around a tree.

Whew, My favorite, you modify for your container. I use a 55 gallon drum with a ventilated lid. Pour in 100 pounds of corn, 100 pounds of sorgham, 10 pounds of sugar, several packets of yeast, several packets of strawberry jello, and a six pack of your least favorite beer. Cover with water, I use warm pond water since I don't want the chemicals in drinking water to mess with my yeast :) Wait a month. I hang a 3 gallon bucket of the stuff, liquid and all, about 2 feet off the ground AND the post hole trick. Your best bet is to hunt at night when its HOT summertime Florida or Texas HOT. Hang it and they will come!!!

First, I'll say that my best results have come from using plain corn and Hog Wild. You can smell that Hog Wild from a few hundred yards away so ya know the hogs will pick up on it. I recently tried a new mix and have had pretty good results. I fill a bucket half full of corn, add two beers, and one or one and a half gallons of buttermilk. Cover it and let it set in the sun for a few days. Suprisingly, the smell was not too bad, but I haven't let mine soak for more that 4 days. It had almost a sweet smell to it. I say half full because the first time, I only left about an inch of room in the bucket and the swelling corn popped the lid off.
Disperse it however you feel. I like to put some in a hole or a wallow and then spread some around on the ground and even try to elevate some to help the wind carry the scent. Good luck and yeah, let us know how you did. |
