MORNING ROUTINE (for the hardcore scent guys)

I have a mrning prehunt routine I always do. It's like clock work. I was all my clothes in the scent free stuff the night before. I leave those in the dryer or a sealed plastic bin with apples. As soon as I wake up I stumble to the shower and use the scent body and shampoo wash. Use scent deodorant then dry off with a scentfree washed towel. Then I go downstairs, put on my first layer of clothes (depending on temp) and bring the rest to my truck in the bins. I spray down my truck seat and drive there in my socks or sneakers. Once I'm there I spray all my equipment down, myself, boots, and the rest of my clothes. For all you hardcore scent guys do you see something wrong with the routine? If you think it's overkill...save it. I see more mature bucks than most and nobody is gonna tell me to do any less.

RE: MORNING ROUTINE (for the hardcore scent guys)

I don't follow as strict a routine as you do Cfd but I do shower in the morning with scent free soap and shampoo and I do spray all my gear down before I go into the wood's and I see my share of good deer as well even when I don't .
But I do have friend's who do absolutely nothing and see many deer as well ,so I don't know what to say.I guess it's up to you whether you think it work's. I'm up in the air with this one, I don't have any strong proof that it work's or that it doesn't .I'll continue to do this and I don't bring my outerware in the house at all during hunting season I leave it in my truck in a container with pine brow's until I'm putting it on and as for the boot's they stay in the truck as well until I go to the bush but everything get's sprayed before I go into the bush .

Ate-Up...I agree BUT there are those times when that unexpected front moves in or the big boy comes from where you didn't expect. That's why I do what I do so I don't have to rely so much on the wind.

fdjay,
your routine is exactly like mine. Alot of guys I ghave talked to didn't think about washing the towel in scent free soap. They would go to all that trouble then dry off with a towel washed in regular detergent. One thing that I will add to your routine. My wife, daughter and even the dog know that after my scent free shower everyone is off limits from touching me. I know that it seems real hardcore, but like you, i get really close to alot of deer all the time so I am not gonna change it.

Same here, I do nearly the same routine as cfdjay and Proff, but I'll take it a step further.
Blinds, calls, decoy, and stands etc sit in the back yard and get sprayed down twice a day with baking soda and water solution for a week before they go in the field. I keep a sock full of baking soda in my bow case and a sock full in the back of my Tahoe where I keep the equipment. I have a tub for each type of field wear and garbage sacks for when I remove them. My friend Philbert8 gargles with peroxide also before leaving the truck.

;) cfdjay/you sound like a real commited hunter. When you have success like you have experienced it reenforces your morning routine. Stick to your routine if it works for you. Good clean hunting, my friend and don't forget to thank God for your health, every day.

That's a great idea with the sock of baking soda. I will give that a try this season!! As for the gargling, I forget that I will gargle with vanilla extract.

Something I didn't see mentioned and is often overlooked is the fact that your washer and dryer are used by your family and their scented soaps all year. At least one month before season we switch to a non scented detergant and don't use fabric softner or dryer sheets. Would be nice to keep it that way all year but you know:eek:

RE: MORNING ROUTINE (for the hardcore scent guys)

cfdjay I go a few steps further than you. I do not was my cloths but once a weekend unless I swet extremely heavy. Then I was wash it in my sent free stuff [always running a load with nothing but hot water and my sent free stuff to get the smell of other detergent out of there and also running the dryer empty while cloths are being washed.]. I also start washing in my sent free stuff 30 days before season starts,i also go to sent free deoderant. When I wash my hunting cloths I use sent free and baking soda.

During hunting season I wear completely seperate cloths {washed in sent free} that I change when I get to the woods. I always were sent lock and rubber boots.

When the cold weather comes along I carry like 3 totes of cloths and change into my long johns when I get to the site.

I once read an artical by I believe Dick Idol {not exactly sure}, but he used clorifill pills and also a drug that is used by people with colostomy bags for smell. These pills helped take away the human smell. I am trying to find them this year.

RE: MORNING ROUTINE (for the hardcore scent guys)

Here' s what I do. I learned it a couple of years ago on another forum. It works great. Wash your hunting clothes in sent free soap or detergent. After it finishes, reset your washer to the rinse cycle an pour a generous amount of baking soda.
I use a small box of the cheap soda that wal-mart sells. Bout 25 cents a box.
Run the rinse cycle. As it rinses, the baking soda granules embed into the fabric.
After the rinse cycle is over, HANG the clothes to dry. ( do not use a dryer) This way the soda stays in the frabric. Then put them away til time to use. It works really well. I see more deer and they come in close. I wash everything, gloves, face mask, socks, everything. Then I store them in one of those plastic storage boxes. With the soda in the fabric, you can wear the same clothes a couple of times. Just take them off after the hunt and put then back in the storage box.

For cover scent, Racoon pee works well for me.

good luck
mike

RE: MORNING ROUTINE (for the hardcore scent guys)

1. Clothes are washed and dried in baking soda the night before and set next to the bed. Sometimes they get an earth scent dryer sheet just to keep them soft.
2. I shower with Hunters Specialties green liquid soap and brush teeth with regular toothpaste
3. Before I set out (at the car right before I walk in) I spray myself and the equipment down with a homemade scent killer I found on a board last year. It works great (based on personal experience and testimonials from others who have tried it) and it's dirt cheap compared to brand name scent killers.
4. Put out a drag line just for the heck of it.
5. Set out at least two some scent pads at a right angle to the wind from my stand.

I start the season off like most of you but for one reason or another I get lazy after a couple of weekends and don't stay as strict but I always wear my scent blocker suit with the headgear, play the wind, shower, and spray down when entering the woods

RE: MORNING ROUTINE (for the hardcore scent guys)

One thing I noticed last year.
I also use the earth scent dryer sheets (that smell just puts me in the mood!)
Having switched to washing my clothes in the baking soda, the dryer sheets and clothes still come out of the dryer scent free.
Those earth sheets from hunter specialties are pretty strong! But the baking soda is stronger!
So as an experiment (actually I was just in a hurry) I didn't wash my clothes after hunting one time and instead just threw them in the dryer with the earth scent sheet. Still came out with no scent! Threw the clothes in a bag with an earth scent wafer and the next morning - still no scent!
Save some money, instead of buying new scent lok clothes, spend the $0.25 on a box of baking soda!

I also do the full routine as most of you do, my wife thinks I'm nuts and some of my bowhunting friends think I'm taking it to far, but I feel better about doing it and that's all that matters to me.

RE: MORNING ROUTINE (for the hardcore scent guys)

Now after all this how many of you put a dip in during the hunt?

HAZCON7 06-07-2004 04:01 PM

RE: MORNING ROUTINE (for the hardcore scent guys)

No dip for me!

But I will have a smoke when I think its safe.

I worry about scent control for my long walk into the woods and for setting up not for my time in the tree.

RE: MORNING ROUTINE (for the hardcore scent guys)

none for me...i QUIT

Proff 06-07-2004 06:17 PM

RE: MORNING ROUTINE (for the hardcore scent guys)

No dip or smokes for me so I don't have to worry about that scent. But what I will do is find the freshest pile of deer poo on the way in and put a big pinch of that in my lip. The warmth of my mouth keeps it fresh and my breath blows it in all direction and really puts the deer at ease. And as a bonus the taste really keeps you awake and alert on stand!:D

I take a sip from a bottle of pure vanilla as I leave the truck and every once in a while on stand. I've read that every breath puts out scent, why not make it vanilla:eek:

RE: MORNING ROUTINE (for the hardcore scent guys)

I don't want to burst your bubble but animals can smell the faintest sent (ever seen a drug or bomb dog in action?). I do the above thing as far washing in sent free stuff. I do it to cut down on the smell. I do know that everything in the house goes throught it with Tide or whatever. The Dryer is no different.

I know that I can reduce my senct only so far. I take the furthur step to hunt where people are. I hunt suburbs to cover that dang sent. I like to hunt places that people frequent, I like places the have fires burning and places where heavy traffic flows.

If you want to take it to the extreme, wash in a spring, hang the clothes in the woods, wash with sent free soap and still hunt the wind...;)

What have you heard about smoke? Any proof or tests that show any good? If there is any good I would hang all my stuff in the smoke house.

RE: MORNING ROUTINE (for the hardcore scent guys)

I do dip but not in the woods. I dip on the way to the farm [in the truck] rinse mouth out a couple of times with baking soda mouth wash. It makes lunch in the truck nice. I also use the mouth wash every hour or so on stand.
