I poke them in the side with my bow or gun, or kick them in the rear. It realy depends on wich way It is facing when I come up on it. If I can see the eyes, I don't need to poke em', cuase I will be able to see the "glazed" over and know if the deer is dead or not.

You have to know it is staged. If I shot a buck like that I would be screeming and yelling when I found him. Then I would have to wait 15min to get my act together befor I gutted him (at least with my first 2 dozen bucks).

Just check the eyes and chest. You will get a reaction of some sore. I have never heard of a deer playing dead.

You mean you guys actually check to see if the deer is dead once you find 'em?

Heck, most of mine just fall over from fright once they see what a great bowhunter I am!

Seriously though, if it is in archery season then by the time I get down from my tree stand, and pack everything up and then trail the darn thing for "hours" (they rarely drop within sight for me ) then the darn thing is so stiff that it would take a blind mine not to see that it is as dead as a door nail.

Rifle season...well, now that is a whooooolllee different matter...

I've been poking them in the eye for 20 years, and my father has for about 50 years. Sure ain't nothing new. If it doesn't blink, it's dead, no question.

Well I guess my whole family are TV stars, I have poked thier eye for 38 years, my cousin for over 50, and my uncle for 50+. I have no problem with the other methods either, there have been quite a few that I didn't poke them in the eye because when there is a hole 3 inches round and an expolsion of blood out the far side and they were knocked flat, I just didn't see the need.

You know, I'm usually so wired after a kill that I don't remember if I poke them or not. I do know that I always check the eyes. That glazed-over look of a dead deer is hard to miss.
