Well I plan on taking a hog sometime this spring with my bow.. Heres the dill.. My bow is set on 60 lbs(max).. I can hold it back steady for prolly 30-45 seconds max.. I know hogs skin is very tuff so should i take it down a crank or two? I will be using 100 grain T-Heads. WHere should i shoot them? Cause i know they have some sort of shield guarding there heart.. The main thing im wanting to know is if 60 lbs and straight Broadheads are enough.. Thanx

PLease help on what you all suggest! cause i sure as heck dont want a pig on a rampage when all i got is a bow.

Leave your bow's weight where it is. You won't be holding it very long. A well placed arrow that is properly tuned is important. A fixed blade head that is razor sharp like your thunderheads should work ok. On mature boars, put it low in behind the gristle shield that protects the vitals behind the shoulder. That usually means a quartering away shot. Sows and young boars aren't near as tough to kill. You will also need to watch your butt. Hogs can be cantankerous and will charge. Even after being mortally wounded with a well placed arrow.

I took a hog pushing 300 lbs in Texas last year, shooting a Reflex Xtreme @60lbs, 435 grain 2213 with 100 grain Wasp HT Cam Lok, honed hair shaving sharp. This setup delivers 240FPS/55 lbs KE. The shot was just under 20 yards, flat broadside. the hit was a double lung just over the heart, which didn't quite make it through the gristle pad on the off side ribs.(this was the first time ever this bow/arrow combination didn't produce a pass through with a similar hit on any other type of critter) He went about 50 yards. Make sure your broadheads are shaving sharp, and your rig will do the job...

I know this much that my bow will be able to kill a hog for sure. The only shot i will take will be 20 or below yds.I will make sure my broadheads are vrey sharp.. Would shooting him a little behind the ear work if hes close enough?? Thanx guys. I just got done today tuning my bow in and stuff. SO im ready to go. sorry brother, my hunting partner shot a 250lb boar in the eye at 15 yards. It charged with arrow protruding out of its head. We jumped in the trees and it ran past us. It ran forever as far as I know, no blood trail. My best hog shots have been quartering away on large hogs. Go for the heart and exit lung. That gristle plate is a tough one.
Always be warry of your location and remember when a hog squeels, other hogs may charge. They don't die easy but a lung shot should drop your hog. Sharp broad head is most important. Good hunting

Hi in the middle of January 02 I took a hog at 20 yards it was 220lbs. My bow is a Prairy fire, the weight was 65 pounds I was using rocket brodheads open on impact 100 gr. I Shot a pass through with 2216 arrows. Just through the lung it ran about 40 yards that was it. My dad's boar his bow was 52pounds and it was a heart shot at 10 yards. So you just have to worry about making a well placed shot. Also he was using the same brodheads. I hope that this will help you. Thanks Carl Ellik

Your setup will be fine, provided you have it tuned to perfection, and your broadheads are shaving sharp. Take only good shots where you can put the arrow where it belongs and enjoy your pork chops.

your rig sounds like it shouldn't have any problems. quartering away is th ebest shot to take on hogs from everything I have read & heard, I too am going hog hunting this spring for the first time so I have been doing a lot of research. good luck to you!

I have made my mind up that i will only take a quartering away shot. Im doing that just because I dont want to take any chance of getting charged at. And i will only take a pretty close shot.. All i need to figure out now is a shotgun to take with me that will hold more then 3 shells and it can shoot slugs.. Since im a waterfowler all my shotguns have chokes in them. ANd i wasnt really wanting the gun to be too big. But i will find something out soon surely. Thanks alot guys! O yea and if i ever get one i will have pics. Your setup is fine. Anyplace behind the shoulder will do the job. The shield is forward of the front shoulders it's there to protect them from hooking tusks when they fight. Stay downwind and good luck!!!!!
