Which broadheads provide the best blood trails??
 

As stated earlier in my other post, I am searching for a broadhead that will leave an absolutely devastating blood trail. I've shot fixed heads for past 15years and have always been fairly happy, but after helping some of my buddies blood trail their deer, I realized I am missing out on something, mechanicals leave an unbelievable blood trail. But, I do not totally trust mechanicals and my setup is low KE(50-55), so I am iffy about trying mechs.

What broadheads in your experience have left amazing blood trails?

I've killed deer with Magnus, Muzzy, Thunderheads, Satelites, Bear and a few others, so I'm looking for info on others. Thanks.

EDIT: Please assume all hits are double lungers. And yes, a deer can cover quite alot of ground with a double lung hit.

An aweful lot will depend on the hit. If you hit them good with any quality head, they won't go far. That said, my favorite head for whitetail is either a 4 bladed 145 grain muzzy, or a five bladed 135, or 145 grain Innerloc. But my best bloodtrail ever was with a buck blaster. I don't use them anymore however, because I can not afford to practice enough with them. they are also somewhat lacking in penetration.

I have killed deer with Muzzy's , First Cuts , Gators, Snypers, Hammerheads, Shockwaves, and Spitfires !

Spitfires give the best blood trails by far to me ! It is noticably different IMO as long as you get an exit wound! I will admit that by design .....they suck(as far as blood) if you stick one high and don't get an exit !

Hammerheads and Muzzy's have given me good trails ! First Cuts actually were alright ! So so trails with the others ......and all of these were good hits !

The broadheads that give the best blood trails are the ones that cut major, high pressure arteries and make holes on both sides in the lower half of the chest cavity.;) If you're shooting down on a close shot from a treestand and have to place the shot high in the chest to get both lungs, then you'd better get a passthru if you want a good blood trail. Otherwise, the wound will do most of it's bleeding internally. The chest cavity will fill with blood until it reaches the level of the wound.

After tracking broadhead hit deer for 38 years, I have found the spitfires to leave the best blood trails, but, as others have said, got to have that exit hole. I have pics of several deer shot with spitfires, and they are devastating, entrance and exit.

That is so true. And if you are in this situation, it is very important to get a head that penetrates well. Which will probably not be the biggest diameter head.

I don't know about others, but I have also found that if you get an exit too low, that fat deposits can also clog up a hole.

A broadhead that goes through an animals vitals will leave the best blood trail. You don't need one that will blow a hole the size of a baseball in an animal.

I good shot will put the deer down somewhere not far away.

If you know the deer's territory, travel routes, bedding areas, and probable hiding places within the area the deer lives, you are still in the (tracking/locating) game regardless the absence or minimum quanity of a blood trail.

If I hit a deer good - lungs/heart/major artery - a blood trail really is not a concern to me. Often they go down before a good trail starts to lay on the ground anyway.

Liver and gut shots are thw ones IMO that require a good or "better" trail.

To be honest - as stated above - the broadhead itself is just one of many factors. I prefer 3 blade over two, simply for those off shots when a slit "may" close up or get plugged up easier. But almost any good head will give you good results.

Just pick one that has the best chance of getting two holes and hit em good:)
