RE: Who Practices Year-Round? Is it REALLY Necessary?
ORIGINAL: stealthycat How about this twist ..... I can pick up any of ya'lls compound (assuming its tuned and around 28" draw) and I can shoot it better in 20 minutes than I can with my longbow after shooting it for 3 years. What do ya'll think of that ? It is a true statement. I could take a tuned compound out into the woods and after 30 minutes practice assuming a deer gives me a 20 yard shot. Yes, I believe compounds are that easy to shoot. Recurve bows and compounds are both difficult to master. Who cares if has more equipment on it then the other. A bow is a bow is a bow to me. As long as I have one to shoot I'm good. What about manual and automatic cars. If you win a race with the manual does it make it better than the automatic. |
RE: Who Practices Year-Round? Is it REALLY Necessary?
I shoot a least 4 times each week. Not so much for practice, but because I enjoy shooting. I've been doing this for near 15 years.

RE: Who Practices Year-Round? Is it REALLY Necessary?
I shoot for fun and if i get better because i shoot 3 times a week so be it.
It doesn't matter if its a 30 pointer or a doe they are all trophys to me. I can take one with either compound or a traditional bow as long as its a bow thats all that matters to me. |
RE: Who Practices Year-Round? Is it REALLY Necessary?
Funny how one can score more then the other without being more accurate. Why does more energy matter? When you guff and hit the shoulder. Why do people hunt elk with a 7mm instead of a .243? Forget it I'm never going to change your mind. Arthur P once again you are the man. Why does more energy matter? When you guff and hit the shoulder. Why do people hunt elk with a 7mm instead of a .243? |
RE: Who Practices Year-Round? Is it REALLY Necessary?
ORIGINAL: Arthur P You guys that claim practice is unnecessary... I don't want to see ANYTHING from any of you come August and September. I don't want to see one freakin' question about form, tuning, arrow spine, sights. I don't want to see one complaint about how your string broke in your case and you didn't know about it and now the pro shop is too busy to put a new one on for you so you can go hunting tomorrow. Not a word from any of you! NOTHING! You've sown the seeds, now you can choke on your harvest. I advocate practice. I absolutely despise the very notion that practice is not a requirement for shooting a compound. So, unlike you clowns that argue the reverse, at least MY conscience is clear. Just remember your point of view next fall. That's when those people that have taken your advice, that they don't need to practice, are coming on here posting. Remember what you told them when they're moaning about shooting just good enough to wound the animals they draw down on. You'd better not pull your ethics bullsh*t on them, because YOU are the ones that put the idea out there. This whole damn thread is flat sickening. I think the whole lot of you need to take a refresher course in bowhunter ed.[>:] You advocate practice all year and then smash people by saying you don't want them asking questions?? Don't you want them practicing correctly??..........or would you rather they be using bad form, wrong set ups, untuned equipment and poor techniques.......as long as they are practicing?? People have to ask questions to learn the right way to do things. If you don't want to answer them then fine......you don't have to. It's an open forum and there are MANY people who want to help others learn so they can become better archers and hunters. Discouraging people from asking for help is doing as much or more damage to this sport then people not practicing enough. |

What do ya'll think of that ? It is a true statement. If your proficient with your trad bow when you step in the woods and hunt within your known capabilities , how is the hunt it'self more challenging than the compound hunter who does the same? You asked before why so many hunters shoot compounds over traditional? I cant answer for everyone but I'm sure there are several reasons. Most probably look at it like everything else in life and assume newer must be better. Others (like myself) , started out with traditional and switched to the compounds because they were pretty entrigueing. Others probably use compounds because they realized they just dont have the time it takes to stay proficient with a trad bow. |
RE: Who Practices Year-Round? Is it REALLY Necessary?
I know I said I was done and all....but KY keeps edging me on.
By the way, you don't have to yell...take the caps lock off next time;) I know that I live in a rural community and I do have the luxury of shooting in my back yard....but some people do not. Some live in teh city with no yard or have limitations set on them by the city to where that can't shoot in their yard. Now this I will talk about on a personal basis. If I pull my bow and my gun out after a year of no shooting and shoot from 20 yards, I will be hands down more accurate with my bow. Why......because I am a terrible shot with a gun from a standing position. So what does that mean, if I go gun hunting.....I am going to have to do a lot of practice. Oh yeah, and for the record I can hit the broad side of a barn (or atleast my little toolshed out back):D Trust me, I know from experience. Can anybody guess the one word that keeps coming up post after post?? PROFICIENT Just be proficient with the tool you are using and go hunting!! |
RE: Who Practices Year-Round? Is it REALLY Necessary?
arthurp,
I don't know if any of your post was directed towards me (nor do I care;)) but I will respond by saying that I don't advocate not shooting at all but shooting all year certainly isn't necessary. The guy that I mentioned hardly shoots at all and RARELY makes a bad shot. You seem to me to be more of an archer than hunter. I see you tout, quite often, your shooting abilities but I never recall you recapping your hunting successes. I don't have an issue with it, it just seems to me like you approach things from an archer's standpoint that occaisionally hunts. I think people need to practice as much as it takes for them to responsibly take game and they need to know their limitations, however, that is a different amount for everyone. I typically practice for 3-4 months before season rolls around but that doesn't mean that I am more ethical than the guy that I mentioned. That guy is money in the bank when it comes to killing deer. I would put him up against anyone that I know when it comes to deer shot at to deer recovered (and he actually shoots at them;)). He's a naturally good shooter and he just doesn't take bad shots and he just doesn't miss. I certainly don't advocate that people not practice (nor do I believe does anyone else in here) however, I also think it's rediculous to say that people are unethical if they don't practice all year long:eek: |
RE: Who Practices Year-Round? Is it REALLY Necessary?
It takes some investment in time to get honed in. It takes about 6 weeks for me to hone in find the form and burn it in. Basically I strive for that point at which I can consitently hit 1.75 inch 9 arrow groups at 20. And then I have the confidence I need. But I really need to keep it tight throughout the year to get it done. Is it necessary all year long? Probably not but it aids in confidence to keep it consistently close. We spend all season for that one shot or maybe two. It's a small investment so that when the opportunity presents the shot is made.

When I hunt I never feel buckfever infact when I see the animal coming that I want, I get tunnel vision and simply want to kill that animal as quickly as I can by making a good shot. Never? You gotta have just a little, not to the point of losing consentration, but I wouldnt be having any fun if the presense of game didnt make my heart pound. I'm sure most people still get that feeling, I hope so, or is it just me? |
