Face it or tree between?

When bowhunting out of a tree stand do you face the area you are excpecting the
deer to come from or do you put the tree between yourself and the area your watching?
Myself I face the area, if the tree is kind of bare I will use a bungee cord and put
branches around me, I also put some branches on the bottom of my stand with plastic
lock ties.

Face but try and keep some out front cover. If there isnt any cover on the tree, then i might go to the side, but i never face away.

I always face it.... as long as you have ample cover, or you are high enough, you will be just fine.

I try to have them come from the side don't really have a reason but i like it that way. I agree with those before me you have to have some cover around you. Pine trees are great for this.

ewolf do you climb pines? I face the place where I think the deer will come in.

Perfect world?

Find a tree where you can face the direction of travel....... wind in your favor, forward and back cover, anticipated travel/trail passes the stand about 15yrds off your left shoulder (for right handed shooter). If you can play the sun? even better.

At least that's what I shoot for when I look for stand locations and adjust from there........I try my best to get no closer than about 10 yards from main trails.

Quartering to my left side for my right hand shot...less shifting on the stand when I take the shot

I face the expected arrival, but both deer I killed last year were behind my tree.

I would face the area i would expect the game to come from.If possible i would sit at least 20 feet up.If the tree has no cover then i would make sure there was enough cover behind me.But the higher up the better:)

I set myself up for a left hand shot while facing the expected approach and use these when needed.

It depends on the situation. Sometimes I face the tree, sometimes I don't. It all depends on the set up.

I would face the oncoming route or have a shot from the left side of my stand as I am right handed. But, I usually have the ability to shoot in all directions to some point. However, due to nature this is not always possible.

I usually try to find a clump of trees. 2 or 3 trees in a group are good for me. And then I face the direction the deer are coming from. This past year I got a nice 8 point out of a clump of 3 red oaks.

I hunt facing the area the deer will come from, I try to look for a tree with good cover, I its late in the season I will make cover with branches from other trees, and platic ties. it's worked so far

Finding the perfect tree is not easy sometimes. I try to face the direction they might come from but have faced away before with success.

RE: Face it or tree between?

I generally face the direction that allows for the most shot area. As we all know rarely do they come exactly how we want. Sun direction also plays a part as well. I hate facing the sun.

RE: Face it or tree between?

In a perfect world, I try and set myself up so I can see a deer coming from a descent distance away and have enough cover both front and back...so I can get ready, draw before the deer is in my shooting lane. I tend to hunt quiet a few field edges so this scenaio plays out a lot. See or hear the deer coming from about 50-75 yards away(staging areas), they usually stop to look over the field so that gives me time to stand, get into position, draw even before they step foot into the field. But that's perfect also of course. :D

It dosen't much matter when you get 2 dozen grazing below you for most the hunt.

Left Quartering presents my best shooting option.

I read or heard somewhere that if you have to hide behind something, your camo isn't doing its job.

RE: Face it or tree between?

I face away from the tree unless it's been a really slow day and I need a change of scenery.

I like to keep my best shot alleys in front of me or to my left with a few decent sized trees between me and the main trail.
That way I can draw without being seen when the deer's head goes behind a tree trunk. If a deer walks by on the trail from in front of me to my left, then I will get a broadside shot at my left. If the deer walks along the trail from my left to in front of me, then I'll have a quartering away shot when he gets out front. I learned my lesson the hard way about this. My first deer was almost a non-lethal wounding. He was on my off-side (right for me), and I was too close to the trail. He was too close to risk changing my foot position and I took the shot with my feet facing forward and my bow pointing to my right at about 2:00. It was tough, and I messed up the release a bit causing my arrow to hit the spine and ground him. A finishing shot was easy enough and he died quickly, but I felt badly enough that I'll never take that shot again.

I also stay in the shade or have the sun at my back whenever possible.

I try to keep my back to dense cover so I don't get blindsided. That way if a deer comes past, he has to do it in front of me.

i set my stands up so the area i expect to get a shot is slightly to my left because im a righty. i shoot sitting down in a 15 foot ladder stand most of the time.

RE: Face it or tree between?

Zak123. I'm a hang on stand kind of guy. I get up in them puppys as high as i can. If i think i will fall and live i'm not high enough. The only problem with the theory is one thing. WIND KILLS YOU. Its like trying to shot fish from a john boat in the ocean during a storm, its almost impossible. I have stands set up for windy days, but most of the time i try not to hunt windy days, i don't see much anyhow. Pines have the best cover of any tree out there.
