RE: How high
for me it really depends on what time of year, early season when the woods are full of life, I may only have to go 15ft, But on that same tree in late fall 25ft, so it really deends on your situation. I have killed deer when i was 8 ft in the tree on numerous occasions.

RE: How high
If you use your new safety harness along with your Viper, you will feel safe at any height. I was always nervious at any height. Now I am comfortable at 20 ft. But most of the time I find most natural cover at around 15 ft.
good luck |
RE: How high
It almost always depends on the specific environment that you are planning on putting the stand into. If cover is not available (even with your add-on branches) below 15 feet then you should be at least 15 feet high. On average I am normally between 15-22 feet off the ground.

RE: How high
I usually go from 15-25' depending on the cover.

RE: How high
I've killed deer anywhere from 6ft to 30ft. It all depends on the setup. I typically climb about 20ft. This gives you a good angle, I would like to be higher if possible, but many times the canopy keeps me from getting over 20ft.

RE: How high
I feel most comfortable between 15-20 feet high, but it all depends on terrain and the tree itself.

RE: How high
I know this is a little overboard but....
I have three stand locations that I have placed static 11mm climbing line from about 35' to the base of the tree. It is tied fairly tight from bottom to top. I have a climbing harness and an ascender (Petzel Ascention) I clip into the line. You wouldn't have to use a climbing harness just a carabiner and your harness. As you climb up with your climber (or tree steps for that matter.) You mearly move the ascender up with you. IF you were to fall the ascender locks up and you will hang there until you get your feet back in place. I feel much more comfortable up there at 25 - 30 ft. because I KNOW that this will hold me! I tie-on my ascender without a carabiner to be quieter. When you come down you mearly move the ascender down as you go. Very safe. Check out a local climbing gear store, they have people there to help you get it figured out and teach you how to use the gear. Also if you are looking for a something that you can hook onto once you get up the tree try a coated cable loop. You can purchase it at a farm supply store and place it around the tree. Take a carabiner and hook it to your harness and then when you get up to the top of the tree just hook it on the loop. The best part is that your biner will slide easily around when you rotate around the tree. I have these at all of my semi permanant stands and ladder stands. In the words of Da' Yoopers "Saftey First! Treat every hunter as if he were loaded" |
RE: How high
If tree cover allows I like to be about 15' up. If not I try to find a diffrent tree. If the "spot" is that good I'll make any tree in the aera work which may result in being as high as 25'. I don't like to go any higher than that.

RE: How high
I know this is a little overboard but.... I like the idea of being tethered at all times. The climbing line is a great idea on perminent stands. But I don't use a perminent any more. The harness system that comes with the viper is close to perfect IMO. The climbing line is about 5' long and you just slide it up the tree ahead of you. Your harness is attached to the climbing line with a prusic (sp?) knot. Its a sweet setup. I made a another climbing line thats about 8 feet long and tied a foot loop in the loose end. I think, if I fall, that having that loop to stand in will help me get back in my stand. I guess you could have a line that hangs all the way to the ground. But thats a lot of rope. good luck and be careful out there!! |
RE: How high
I like to be 15 to 18 feet, Iam not a big fan of hights either, so the lower to the ground I can stay the better I feel...
