You aren't getting it if...

you don't see a deer every time you hunt, then ....
you don't see a buck 99% of the time then....
you don't see a P&Y 80% of the time then...
you don't expect to see a HUGE (fill in your Size Goal)% of the time....

You aren't getting it!

What I'm trying to point out is you have to see what you plan to kill if you want to kill it!

Don't except the fact you if don't have conections or don't own property find the way on

Look around and scout your county and/or state.
I did this for the first few years in. I saw deer and the ocasional P&Y but it didn't satisfy me. I talked and connected. I can shoot a deer every time out. I don't get a chance to see a 160 class everytime but I expect to.

In otherwards if you do your homework, you stand a better chance of finding that trophy buck, but then there is the occasional guy that just gets LUCKY, right place at the right time if you know what I mean!! [:@]

Not everyone has the time and/or resources to go galavanting all over thier state schmoozing up to landowners for that magical honey hole. Most guys find a property or 2, scout it the best they can and hunt the deer that are available to them. What's wrong in that?

RE: You aren't getting it if...

Some of my most fun and memorable and gratifying hunts have been ones where I travel to a strange place and/or state, throw a stand on my back, grab my bow. Take a look at the lay of the land as best you can see from the road, take off in the direction or towards the feature you "THINK" has possibilities, find some sign, climb a tree and see what transpires. Sometimes you just hit it better than you can imagine. Manytimes you realize all to late you should have been 50 yards this way or that or maybe on the other side of the road. Fun FUN when it comes together.

RE: You aren't getting it if...

In reality the chance of taking a p&y animal is more plentiful back east on whitetail. Out west we have to work our tails off just for the opportunity.

In the rockies where animals can be in one area that day and five miles away the next puts a real damper on habits of the animal. It usually means a 5 to 7 day cycle if the animals are pushed.

I have and can kill elk and mule deer everytime out with a rifle. I usually hunt where most people have not the ambition to go. But hunting with a muzzleloader and bow makes it more fun and more of a challenge.

Knowing that the monster bull is 70 yds away in somewhat open country and theres no getting closer makes for a beautiful time of watching the animal before he walks on over the hill. Luck is when skill meets opportunity. Stalking a trophy animal out west takes everybit of luck you can have on your side. And endurance. Endeavor to persevere.

Bowhunting is the toughest hunt out west. And if hunting mediocre bucks back east doesn't do it for you. See if just getting a shot opportunity on a nice animal out west is challenging enough.

Out here trophy's get classified on the circumstance not the rack for the most part. After about 20 stalks on bucks or bulls. A nice 20 inch plus buck or a 5x5 bull can look mighty tempting.

All this being public lands. Baiting in Colorado is illegal and I can say I'm glad it is. If you can take a P&y animal on public land you've either had lady luck or you are knowledgable in your craft.

I don't get it....

Let's see:

killed 4, 2 bucks, 2 does, gave two away(after processed) made two folks very happy...made the farmer happy by eliminating two corn suckers...made my 13YO son happy when he took his second deer..Made the 10YO happy when I spent more time squirrel hunting with him and he got his first...

Did I:

See deer every time out..........no[&o]
See a buck 99% of the time.....no[&o]
See a P&Y 80% of the time......no (and sorry, but I could care less about P&Y)

Have fun....I guess by some standards no.

I don't get it....

Not everyone needs to see a buck or even a deer everytime out. I for one could care less if I saw a deer every hunt. It is about getting to spend time with family and friends.

I have been hunting with my dad since I was able to walk. He would take my brother and I to the woods with him and it was precious time spent together. We all have wonderful memories from the past years and I look forward to many more to come, with them and with my children when they get older.

I think you do not get it if you are only hunting for horns. Take a step back and look at the Big picture.:)

I love the anticipation of an upcoming hunt. I love watching the woods come to life on opening morning. I love the comraderie(sp?) of good hunting buddies. I love that final evening knowing there is still a chance I might kill one. I have yet to kill a deer with my bow... but Oh Yeah, I get it...

Aren't getting what??? You aren't saying you need all of those things to enjoy hunting are you?? Everbody has their own idea of what hunting is to them. Hunting is a personal enjoyment for many people and most have different idea about it and why they love it. For some it's about trophy hunting, some its about being in the outdoors, some the thrill of the hunt, some the meat, and for some it is simply being at deer camp and spending time with friends. (and for many it is all or a combination of these and more). I personnally like being out in the woods and seeing wildlife - and harvesting and eating deer. I don't expect to see a 180 class deer (there just aren't that many in our area) and would be very pleased to see/shoot a 120 class deer. I was etremely happy when I shot my first (only) deer with a bow (fork horn) and continue to get excited when I get/see any deer. If that makes me less of a hunter then, well, I guess I am.

Enjoy hunting, however you do it. Hunt hard or don't. Scout or don't. Do what you like and have fun. Happy hunting

RE: You aren't getting it if...

Well said Doughboy!! I couldn't agree more. Put me on the list cause I'm not getting it I guess.

My most enjoyable moment this past season was taking my son out for the first time. It was the last week of bowseason. My son, a couple buddies, and myself went out in the morning to a different property and moved some stands around to prepare for gun season. We had my son with us. He got his workout for the day and got a whiff of some of the things aside from hunting like war stories, scoutin, sign, stand location, etc........ It was a great educational experience for him and he never ran out of question which was really cool.
Then I took him alone and sat in a natural ground blind with him for the afternoon hunt. I guess I worked him too hard, because I felt a big thud on my shoulder and it was him falling asleep. I sat there til dark (1 1/2 hours or so since he crashed). that was the best hunting day of my life.

My second best memory this season wasn't a kill or a monster buck sighting. I was in a ground blind (have a thing for the ground) and I had a young doe bed down about 15 yards from me. I sat there for over an hour and she never knew I was there. She got up and just about stepped on my feet as she passed by me. That was way too cool.

So I guess I don't get it either.

RE: You aren't getting it if...

I've been hunting for 24 years and just found out from this post I'm not doing it right.

When I go out and see nothing for three or more hunts in a row and then finally see a deer, I consider it a successful hunt whether I get a shot or not - guess I was wrong.

When I go out and have an owl land in the branch next to me, walk toward me to figure me out, then jump out of his feathers when the "tree" starts talking to him, guess I was wrong.

When I go out and watch a little six or fork for 20 minutes browsing around, guess I was wrong.

When I go out with my son and we see only a squirrel, or 3 does 30 yards in front of us, guess I was wrong.

I'm lost.

fieldmouse--do you live in Illinois, Iowa, or Kansas? I don't. And no one in my circle of hunting friends (a LOT of guys who hunt different farms) even SAW a 160 class this year . . . but we all took deer. I took 5 myself.

We don't get it.

You start out so far in the twilight zone I didn't even want to waste my time on you, but toward the end of your post you almost make some sense. I think, assuming your trying to plug positive mental attitude. If that's your point, then kudos. I think attitude is 80% of deer hunting, the rest is details.

As for you twilight zone stuff, get real. In MT, according to the experts you've got some country with deer densities <10 per square mile, and other areas with densities >50 per square mile. Do you suppose maybe a guy on the former area might possibly be an okayish deer hunter and not see a deer every time out? Go to the other area, you would probably say, but some of that country with low densities has the best big buck ratios, so there are trade-offs to be made. Sometimes life, and hunting, doesn't boil down to a simple series of four yes or no questions.

I just got into it haven't even participated in a season yet. I have spent alot of time walking next years hunting grounds. Finding trails, studying the geography, and flora determining where the whitetails might be next fall. Haven't seen a live one yet, but alot of tracks and sign. A doe for the freezer next year? You bet I would be pleased. A small hardwood stand right here in town that opens onto a hayfield were does are observed daily on the late summer/fall evenings. Will I be sitting on the downwind edge of that field next to an oak tree before sunup on opening day? You bet! Am I getting it? I think so.
