Hang on Stand
What kind of hang on stand does everyone use? I have a Summit Viper and love it but there are some trees that I can't use it in and am looking for a light hang on stand that is easy to set up and move around. Thanks for the help!

RE: Hang on Stand
Lone Wolf is my favorite. I also have Gorilla and API
|
RE: Hang on Stand
I've heard great things about the Lone Wolf - light, strong, etc..
I have used the API Baby Grand - comforable stand but not easy to take in and out. I also have used Gorillas and most recently Rivers Edge. These are both great stands - light, comfortable, inexpensive and quiet. I personally try to stay away from stand that have hollow aluminum square tubing for the grate - very loud. (Although a cheap welcome mat solved this problem on the Baby Grand, but wouldn't be good to carry around if you're moving stands.) Stay away from Trophy Hunter. I bought one this year and it's so loud because of cheap workmanship you can't move in it or it'll squeak. Made in China - big surprise it's cheap. |
RE: Hang on Stand
Rivers edge chain on no straps to play with. Only down fall seat is kinda thin not much cushion.....
|
RE: Hang on Stand
I have been using the Gorillas and I have been tickled with them. I am a big guy and a noise freak so I have always made my own all wealed lock-ons but I have been extremely pleased with the gorillas.

RE: Hang on Stand
How much odes a Longe Wolf run? I'm looking for something pretty cheap becuase I'm wanting to buy 3 or 4 of them.
|
RE: Hang on Stand
All my stands are old, i have Loc-on and Amacker brand hand on stands. I do have one newer one that is a remington. I want to buy several new ones this coming year and i really like the looks of the lonewolf but they are pricey so i think i'm gonna take a good look at the Gorilla stands.
|
RE: Hang on Stand
titleist, if you are wanting cheap, don't look at Lone Wolf. The stand is about $150 and then I also bought 4 lone wolf sticks to go with it, another $150. Yes, very expensive for a loc on set, but I use the lone wolf for "mobile" loc on. If I have an area where I want a truly permanant stand, I hang my gorilla or API and use cheap climbing sticks. You have the lone wolf hung in a flash, it is very light and very sturdy. I love it.

RE: Hang on Stand
Cant the lond wolf stand work on crooked trees?
|
RE: Hang on Stand
Yes, it works well on crooked trees. It has a pivoting tree brace on it, that lets in grab and conform to the shape of the tree. I would'nt try climbing upside down or anything, but on slight bends and twists, no problems.
|
RE: Hang on Stand
Price is exactly why I bought a River's Edge this year. (Actually, I bought three stands this year but that was the cheapest, and turned out to be the best). It was 59 bones. Not the chain on type, so the seat may be different because it's huge and comfortable. I use ratchet straps in all my stands and really never take them down so the chain on would probably be better for portability.
|
RE: Hang on Stand
I have two of the gorilla stands and really like them. IMO you can't beat them for the price. They are easy to hang, are rock solid and easy to pack.
|
RE: Hang on Stand
I still use several Loc On brand stands, a few Warren & Sweats and 2 Hunters View. If I were going to buy a new stand I would look at the Chipewa Wedgeloc stands. They seem to be in a league of their own. This will probably be my next stand purchase.

RE: Hang on Stand
BadShotBob: .... on every hang on and my climber I have added those thermal pads you see. They're about 1./4 to 3/8 thick. They quiet everything, make standing easier and balancing better. You really should look into them or make your own. I have a Baby Grand that's comfy as they get. If you add some good padded backpack straps it makes hauling any stand better. I also have Loc On, Loggy Lite, Remington, and Buckshot hang ons. They all have their place. The Baby Grand and Remington are the most comfy to sit in. The Remington is one HEAVY MOTHER!! The Buckshots with their bracket system are great. We've bought a few extra brackets and leave them on the tree. When you want to hunt a stand you simply carry in the platform and seat. It's a solid, light stand with a very comfy seat on par with the Baby Grands.

RE: Hang on Stand
I have been looking into buying a summit hang on. I have a bushmaster climber and love it. There hang ons aren't that expensive either 79 to 99 i think. They seem very easy to attach. Take a look under non climbers:

RE: Hang on Stand
I have the summit viper too, but ireally like to use the hang ons with screw in steps, when i am not hunring public land, but i have the gorilla hang ons the, silverback lite, and the silverback, also for another hang on have the steel star by North Star it is really good stand and is cheap, but my opinion is the gorillas by gametracker are the best, hope this helps.

RE: Hang on Stand
I bought this one this past season and love it. Light, comfortable, very stable and unbelievably easy to hang. I'm buying a set of Bucksteps to go along with it. I don't know how big a fella you are, but the 24" seat height is nice to me.

RE: Hang on Stand
Mike, I'm not that big of a guy. Only 19 years old about 6'1" and 180.
The headhunter looks nice. I already have a Viper climber and IMO Summits are the best stands out there. How comfortable is yours? I think it will be between that stand and a Lone wolf. I'm hoping to be able to find one cheap either on ebay or archerytalk's classified ads. When I do end up getting one of the stand I think I'm going to get the climing sticks to go with it. Not sure about either summits or lone wolfs there either. |
RE: Hang on Stand
I bought a similar stand this year to the Chippewa Wedge Lock. It's called the Moose by Aerospace Industries. The guy used to work for the people at Chippewa and broke off on his own. The design is almost identical but the Moose is $100 less than the Wedge Lock. I can't speak for the Wedge Lock, but I can say that I took the Moose back. Great design, great concept, but the rubber bumpers against the tree squeak like an old clarinet when they get cold, which makes it worthless.
|
RE: Hang on Stand
I had not thought about the possibility of the rubber bumpers being noisy. I had looked at the Aerospace design and actually thought about one. Thanks for the heads up.
|
RE: Hang on Stand
The nice thing about the Lone wolf is that you can get a bunch of hooks and straps and setup several trees and it is a cinch to set the stand.
|
RE: Hang on Stand
The Lone Wolf hangers are great stands and I enjoyed the time I spent in mine this season. I actually have a decent selection of hang-on stands from seevral different companies, however the best ones I enjoyed hunting from ae also the best priced. The Cabela's XT Hang-ons are super stands. All the quality consrtuction you would expect from stands that cost alot more. They are simple, light, silent, and lock down very secure. Best of all I think they only run $60 and $70 apiece, meaning you can buy MORE of them for your deer woods. They are certainly worth many of you taking a serious look at. [8D]

RE: Hang on Stand
I use an Ol'Man hang on. It is kindof expensive, but the seat is extremely comfortable for a small hangon.

RE: Hang on Stand
For those of you that use the gorilla stands bass pro in the bargain cave has the silver back aluminum on sale for 59.99 and 69.99 while supplies last. I bought 5 of them 69.99 models. never used them before so I hope they are good stands. I bought 2 lone wolfs from a place NIB for 170.00. Never used them before either but I will be set for next year.
I noticed that they are a little heavier than the gorilla silver back. I think the manufacturer rates the silver back at 10 lbs and the lone wolf at 10.5 lbs. For those of you that use the lone wolf hang ons, do you use the hook system or not? Have any of you had any squeeks or pops from the gorillas as they have mesh platforms? From my first atempts at placing both stands on a tree yesterday, the gorilla was by far the easiest with one strap. the lone wolf uses a 2 strap system. thanks for any feed back my questions. |
RE: Hang on Stand
ArkansasBowhunter, where in the world did you get 2 Lone Wolfs for $170? I've seen them lised for that price but for only one of them.
|
RE: Hang on Stand
My buddy found them at a store here in arkansas closing them out. They only had 2 left so asked him to buy em for me. This was after I had 5 gorillas in the mail from bass pro. Oh well, I heard so much positive stuff I thought I couldn't pass up the deal. I have only played with them once outside on a tree. With my limited time to put the gorilla and lone wolf up on a tree, the lone wolf was a tad heavier and more cumbersome as it used 2 straps instead of one like the gorilla silverback. platform space is about the same, however I am concerned that the gorilla will pop or squeek over time as it has the mesh platform. the lonewolf has the solid platform which may account for the slight weight difference. I would like some input from people who have and use both stands on the ease of use and whethere there gorillas platform pops or squeeks over time. P.S. don't miss out on the basspro bargain cave as that is a good price on the silverbacks!!!!!!

RE: Hang on Stand
I used a gorilla mess platform never squeak or squeal.Even with time,I used it for over 10 years no noise.Like the mess better than tube floor cause less slippery when snow on or mud under your boots.Prefer the chain type, faster to hang on.

Which is better: The lone wolf sticks of Summit sticks?

When I do end up getting one of the stand I think I'm going to get the climing sticks to go with it. Not sure about either summits or lone wolfs there either. You're just a little taller than I am so the extra 4" of seat height will be even better for you. The stand is very comfortable. The seat cushion is about 3" thick and it has a zippered pouch on the front which makes it nice for things like you hoist rope and such. I was very suprised at how stable the stand was considering that it attaches with a strap instead of a chain. You can also buy extra straps in case you move around a lot also. Once you get your steps in place it literally will take you longer to pull the stand up than it will to attach it to the tree. I don't think you'll regret buying this stand. As far as the steps are concerned, I can't comment on the Lone Wolf or the Summit steps, but I do plan on buying a set of the Summit Bucksteps very soon. I'll let you know what I think of them when I get them. |

RE: Hang on Stand
I bought 8 Remington .300 mag stands last year on clearance from sportsmans guide. They are nice stands. BIG and fairly comfy, and the footrest is nice. The only downside is they are steel, which makes them a little heavy. But considering I paid $55 shipped for each one...and I only hang them one time a year, I can't complain. If you are looking for a real comfy stand, that you are taking in and out regular, I'd go aluminum with a sling type seat. They had those same stands on clearance again this year.
|
RE: Hang on Stand
I have 13 hang on stands. My easiest to hang are my Northstar's that only cost me $50 from Cabela's. But I got my best buy this year at Wal-Mart. I bought 2 Hunters View Bobcat's for $39 regular price and returned later for $29 clearance. They are chain ons that came with a really padded seat and a chest harness with each one. I hang mine once and leave them all except 2 that I leave for mobility for my son and I.
