Election...just for fun.

The Nugent thread has got me thinking.

If you were to elect a prominent "celebrity" bowhunter to represent bowhunters to the media and to the Congress of the USA, who would you name and why?

I'd pick Mark Drury.

He appears to be level-headed, and well-spoken, exhibits ethics that seem to be above reproach at all times, and has enough experience in hunting various states to know what he's talking about.

And yes, you can vote for Nugent if you are so inclined.

Please vote only once.

I would have to say........ Roger Raglin. He shows a true love for the sport. Knowledge about doe lactating periods isn't important when you look at the overall scheme. It is more important to see someone who will fight the fight, but who is respectful and shows a normal (I wouldn't put ol' Ted in that category) love for the sport.

Dave Watson or Brett Favre.

Brett Favre is a house hold name and has already established himself as a class act individual (and I hate the Packers. GO LIONS). Dave Watson...he came from a much better music genre than Ted, he also had long hair like Ted...but he got it cut. He's well spoken also. His only downside is that he shoots a Mathews;)

Bill Jordan of Realtree-

He's not my favorite bowhunting celebrity, but he strikes me as a guy who is very intelligent, shrewd, and knows how to handle people, as well as well-informed about politics, current events, and the role the media has and can have in relation to public outlook on hunting.
A 3-way tie for second would be Roger Raglin , Will Primos and Mark Drury.
3rd place?? - Captain Backstrap!:D

The people mentioned so far in this thread are not celebrities outside of hunting. To the public, they are unknowns. We don't need to preach to the chior. We need a celebrity that is known by people outside of hunting circles, so we can attract their attention and get them to stop and listen. The more famous the person, the more non-hunters that will pay attention. The only true celebrity bowhunter that I know of is Ted Nugent.

If a really famous athlete or actor would take on the cause, then that would be great. So far, none have. My own choice would be to have many well known spokesmen. There is no reason I can think of, to limit this to one person. I'd like to see several hundred.

That statement is true and what a pathetic portrait it paints of this country. People in this country will take an actors political views an hold them as gosphel. Most of the actors in this country only have an high school education and would be flipping burgers if they couldn't act yet they have tremendous influence or peoples political views.....WTF............ It is the same with athletes, why should I give any credence to what an athlete's political view is? because of his athletic ability? I think not.............. Sorry to thread jack it's just that the sheeple in this country that hang on the words of "celebrities" really dissapooint me.

I am confussed, Roger Raglin is now a moron because he is enthusiastic about hunting? Come on!!! It is nice to see a guy get pumped up about killing a deer! I am sick of this "well, he lacks tine length but he will do" or "we have seen this buck 7 years and passed him up as a 189" deer so he could become this 191" deer"

Ted is just insane! He is just rude. I am glad that he takes a stand, but he is too ignorant in his ways. My parents saw a elk seminar of his this past Summer and he was calling the people their retarded, and guess what, there were mentally retarded people sitting beside my dad. That is just rude and I don't want someone like that representing me.

Also, these guys who go around and worship the rack, not the deer.

Roger seems to be one of the few, and I mean very few, that shows emotion and talks about how he is excited.

No, Buck Magnet, I am sure that by my definition RR has been a moron his whole life, I would imagine. but agian that's just my opinion, if he's your hero then more power to both of you. I am just saying that I would just as soon have a retarded chimp represent me as RR.

With comments like that you don't need a retarded chimp representing you - you do a good enough job of that on your own!:D:D (just joking)

However, I wonder why you think RR is a moron?? All I've ever seen of him is a highly enthusiastic deer hunter.

On the other hand, Nugent and his commercialized show reminds me of
a "Lord of the Flies" convention, running around like a bunch of boys shooting "wild game" and trying to act cool. On the outdoor channel he speaks of "God" and "Spirit", then on MTV every other word is vulger or foul. I don't detest Ted or anything, but I don't want him representing me unless he can get his image straight and be who he really is instead of who his audience wants him to be. I think he has done some good things, i'm not trying to bash him, but I would want someone representing me with a little more personal consistency than that.

BTW , Does anybody realize that Geena Davis is an archer?? She is a bona fide celebrity who also seems to be classy and professional.

She's an archer, but I don't believe she is a bowhunter. Even if she is a bowhunter, she does not promote it, just like lots of famous people who bowhunt, but do not go out of their way to promote bowhunting.

If we are just looking for a good spokesman, hire a professional lobbyist. Very few in congress know any of the bowhunters mentioned in this thread, other then Nugent. They would have no added influence on Congress or the general public. Being a good/avid bowhunter doesn't make them a good speaker and one who will attract public attention. True fame will attract attention, however none of these bowhunters, with the exception of Nugent, are famous. Heck, I don't even know who all of them are.

RE: Election...just for fun.

As someone said, about the only one of the primary nominees that anyone outside of hunting would know is Bret Farvre and Ted Nugent. Of course, there's Charlton Heston, who already as represented the NRA. I believe George W. used to at least bird hunt. I also believe Geena Davis actually has hunted. I don't know much about Farvre's hunting (or how to spell his name right) but if you want a real avid celebrity hunter, there's Karl Malone of NBA fame. However, if you're looking for someone with name value and influence outside the sport, it's slim pickings. No one knows Drury, or Adams or Primos outside the sport. Several people that have been mentioned I don't know. Inside the sport, if you want an interesting representative, try Brenda Valentine.....too bad most of the real famous hunters are long dead.....can't get Fred Bear, or James Audubon, or Daniel Boone unless we dig them up............
