I heard some time ago that New York State was planning to increase the length of the bowhunting season...that it was going to open earlier. Does anyone have any further information on this? It would help to know when to plan my vacation time.

I heard they were cosidering making the southern zone start at the same time the northern does for bow and I beleive New York Bowhunters has something on there website about being for an earlier season, however the whole crossbow issue is thrown into it so who knows if it will ever happen.

I made a post under the Northeast regional section about 3wks ago. DEC didn't make any changes at all to either Northern or Southern Tier dates for 2004. I was watching for new postings of dates on their websight. But they didn't do anything. Since they've listed the 2004 dates in the newspapers. We do get an added week of archey time in 04, just by virtue of the leap yr, and how dates fell in the months. I was hoping myself they'd make a change for 9/1 in North, and 10/1 for South archery. But didn't happen. Oh well maybe in 2005.

I hear they want to start shotgun season on Saturday next year so they can have the most hunters possible in the woods.
They will not be happy until they are all gone
Maybe they will give out 50 tags per hunter next year and just be done with it.
Idiots.

Nothing has been done yet, but it's my understanding that eventually, NY bow will open the first of October. The extra 2 weeks are to make up for us bowhunters losing the last weekend of our season. They want to open gun on that Saturday to increase the number of hunters in the field. I can live with that. Nothing has been finalized yet, but that's the word I got from the guys who run NY Bowhunters. Not 2004, but maybe 2005?

give me a break - there is enough time, room, and deer for all hunters
that's all we need ...... hunters attacking other hunters
there is no need for it!

there has been talk for the last 2-3 years about changing different season dates - ever since they had state-wide meetings/forums to hear the public opinions on many subjects
the first thing that came from those meetings was the change in license limits (good change in my opinion)
they were also looking to change season lengths (like earlier bow, shotgun start on Sat., an early muzzleloader season toward the end of archery and extending the muzzleloader season later - maybe into january)
all of these probably make atlas want to jump out of his tree stand - maybe he should move to Jersey or something (don't really know him but the one comment got me goin' - don't mean to be negative)
I think the more opportunities to get in the woods and hunt, the better (even with muzzleloader in bow season - don't label me a heretic) I, however am not for the saturday opener for shotgun (used to the monday and like the tradition of it) but wouldn't get bent if they did change it
