How many got busted this year?

During opening week I had a deer work down a game trail that crosses my tri-pod for bow hunting. I have one shooting lane but the deer never made it. Instead the deer stopped in a stagging area waiting for the feeder to go off. During the stagging I got busted and can't tell you why.

However the deer was only five yards away so it probably busted me by scent. Then again this was the first opportunity I had shooting a deer with a bow and had fever bad it could have heard me breathing to loud. I never got to see the deer as the cedar tree in front of me is very thick and it was still a bit dark out.

Good Luck to you guy's next year.

Jason

didn't get busted for scent once this year, only one time did i spook at deer and it was because i was really trying to get him to come in. i was grunting loud at him to get his attention like 75 yards away and that didn't work so i busted out the horns. i guess he saw the movement of the horns cause he knew the direction that the grunts were coming from. oh well it was a little 6 pointer and the next time i hunted the stand i shot a nice 9 point there

I got busted plenty of times:D

Walked up on a few on my way in and out

more then a few got wind of me at some point

one or two saw me

Then double what I know saw me - because I am sure others picked up on me without me knowing - or after I had left.

That number comes out to about 20 times or so[:o]

I'd rather not discuss it for about 20 years.

RE: How many got busted this year?

I got busted 3 times:

1---three bucks coming in, the big guy on my left at 10 yds and the other two coming right towards me. I only had one shooting lane left that the big guy was just about to step in to. The other two bucks were facing me at about 15 yds. I knew they'd see me draw but I HAD to because it would be my only chance. I drew, the other two deer bolted and the big guy just stood there. Then he too turned and left.....left me all alone.

2---Had a small 8 pointer come in and was only about 20 yds away. I wanted to mess with him so I hit my can call. I guess it was too loud for him to not see any deer and he kinda looked at me, looked around and then left slowly.

3---Had a decoy out as a buck, 2 does come in. They're at 20 yds and coming right to my shooting lane. See the decoy, GONE.

That's it though. I got 3-D camo over the summer and I think that stuff is great.

Got busted on dec 15, it was cold out that day about 4:15 a deer was coming through the blown down tree"s it was a 6 pt when it was 20 yrds out I put my bow up in the ready position but didnt draw yet. at 15 yrds I just started to draw but out of the corner of my eye I saw another deer coming, amuch
bigger deer. The six must of seen me move my head or move my bow a little
because it stopped and looked right at me. the bigger deer kept coming it
was anice 8 pt. the 8pt stopped at 30 yrds and kept watching the 6 pt the 6
was stomping its feet, finally the 6 circled behind my tree when he did this I drew on the 8 my pinwas just coming in line with the bottom of his chest.
You have to remember I have been holding my bow up for about 5 min by
this time, I was shaking like a leaf, hands freezing ( no gloves on) heart pounding, anyway the 6 either saw me draw or winded me. The 6 blew at me,
I pulled the tricker before I was set, the 6 ran off, I missed the 8, I swore,
then I smiled because it was most dam excitng thing that ever happened to me
while hunting besides actually shooting my first buck with my bow last year.
I smiled all the way home that night infact Im smiling now, I will never forget it
as long as I live.

RE: How many got busted this year?

I was never busted by scent that I know of. I have numerous deer on the same trail that I used and was never noticed. I had quite a few notice me by sight though. I hunted a stand on back to back weekends, shot one doe the first weekend then the same group came in again and the lead doe spotted me before they all got out of the brush and into my sohoting lane. Also had a young 6 pt. get a little spooked at me. I was sitting on the ground and he was 5 yards away from me. He never ran but turned around and headed back. This has been my best year so far in regards to the number of deer I saw and had in range.

Busted by scent and spooking deer while walking in a few times on afternoon hunts.

Two instances stick out in my mind. and both make me sick to my stomach![:'(] The first when I was climbing down from a chain on stand and a huge buck crossed the creek and appeared 30 yards away coming down the trail. The 2nd time was in another area a 1/2 mile away, and the same buck appeared with 6 does coming down a trail upwind of me...................he was not supposed to come down that specific, less used trail in the morning!!!!!!! I got busted opening day when trying to draw on a doe. A small buck had come from behind me that i didn't hear or see and was watching the whole thing, he then snorted and took off and that was the end of that hunt. I got busted several more times through out the year as well. I know they didn't see me move because i had my eyes on them the whole time so my guess would be they scented me and i don't have to say what happened next, snort snort, stomp stomp, bye bye, game over!

I only got busted once that I know of. A doe came in behind me and caught my movement trying to turn around. Never been busted on scent in my hunting career of only 3 years.

Too many times to count for me. I was hunting a heavily pressured area. The deer start looking up when they are 50+ yards away. Managed to get 2 deer though.

A bunch, but there were 3 does and a nice 9pt that weren't quite smart enough.

RE: How many got busted this year?

Come one NY we need to know so we don't do the same!
Good point!!

Well here it is. I was sitting on stand last day of bowseason. It was kind of windy and we just had a pretty good rain, so I decided I was going to try some still hunting. Also, it was a fairly new piece of land so I thought I'd poke around a little before gun season started.
I get down and walk to the edge of where the hardwoods meets a small cornfield. The field is narrow (30 yards) by about 300 yards long surrounde by woods on all 4 sides. The corn is weak and unpicked. Kinda the waist high thin stuff.
Anyway, I get to a little about 30 yards into the cornfield and notice movement way down. I look through the binos and sure enough. MONSTER!!! I mean a brute poking around with a doe. I watched them for a bit trying to formulate a plan. I figured there was no sense of me sitting and waiting cause it looked like they were heading away from me. I tried grunting a couple times. nothing.
So I'm off on my stealth mission. Perfect stalking conditions. Wind was perfect and ground was soft. I start walking down the right edge of the cornfield/woodline. Every time he put his head down I'd take a step or two then crouch.
Probably an hour or so later I'm within 75 of them. I had to lose sight for about 10 seconds at that point because of a little crest in the hill. When I broke the crest, there was the doe standing right on the edge staring right at me. I kinda got myself stuck in an uncomfortable positon when I noticed her. My feet were together and kind of crouching. I'm telling you this is the longest motionless standoff I've ever had. I must have stayed in that position for 15 minutes. She would not budge. I was rolling my eyes back and forth trying to keep an eye on the buck who was probably 30-40 yards away from her now. He had no clue what was going on.
I had enough of the standoff. I could barely stand anymore. I was about to fall over and my leg was asleep. I decided I have to move. So I look at the buck and slowly put my grunt tube in my mouth. I wait until the buck has his head back down and slowly kinda uncrouch myself in a half standing position and move my feet apart. I was hoping just enough to gently push her away without causing a rucuss. I figured I was done and the buck would follow. When I did that she started to slowly trot/walk off and I grunted softly. It worked!!! The buck looked at her then looked my way trying to decide what to do. He let her go on her way and was more interested in me!
Apparantely he wasn't too interested because after walking about 10 yards my way, he turned and started heading away again. That's fine, I've been succesfully sneaking up on him for about 2 hours now. So I go back to plan A. I continue my stealth mission. I get to about 50 yards and finally get a real good look at him. Unbelievable deer!! Biggest by far I've ever been a part of. Now my heart is going nuts realizing I'm going to get a shot at this guy. So I sat there for probably 10 minutes gathering my thoughts so I wouldn't make a mistake and rush things. This guy was in no hurry to go anywhere it was just a matter of me getting in a good enough position for a shot.
I go about 15 more yards on him (35 or so away now). There is an old small rotted tree that has fallen from the woods into the field. Sticking out into the field about 8 feet. The buck is still heading kind of at a diagonal away so I have to try and get around it. The whole time I was tucked close to the brush on the edge for cover and didn't really want to step out any further than I had to but I had no choice. He puts his head down again munching on some corn and I creep around the tree. I get to the tip of it and just start creeping back to the woodline and my pants knicked a corn tusk!!!!
His head whips around and gazing at me. I kind of duck behind the tusks of corn so he couldn't make me out. Another epic staredown!!! He sat there like the doe for about 10 minutes this time I'm not budging for anything. I clipped my release on figuring he may start heading my way. Then he started acting goofy. You know how you can tell they know something is up. His head starts swaying trying to pick me out. He starts walking off a little fast now so I grunt again. He stops dead and does a 180 looking back at me.
Now the amazing part is he starts stomping his feet and grunts 3 times at me. He starts heading at me, but not a little stroll. He looks like he wants to get it on with me. First time I've ever been in the position where a buck wanted to fight me. He wasn't stopping either. I really had no choice but to stand up a little above the corn. I get up and he's only 20 yards away but looking at me. No shot at all. He still continues to come toward me so I draw back almost in self defense I was about to shoot, but he had enough and figured out I was who I was and turned and let me know why they call them whitetails. That's what I saw running about mock 10 through the woods!!!
I really don't know what if anything I could have or would have done differently. I know one thing. If it wasn't for that tree hanging out I would have got him. So all in all I stalked this guy for 2 1/2 hours only to mess it up in the last 30 seconds. I was bummed. I sat on my butt for another hour thinking about it. Walked out after I realized it was pitch black out.

I did a few times. When I get winded, it's usually those very warm, still, muggy days when your scent just settles around you. Also a couple of times going into the stand and a couple of times trying to see what that noise was behind me. Damn, that was a deer!!

No bull permit but I had a five by five at 40 yards for ten to fifteen minutes . . . he could never figure out what I was. Setting up events, I am an avid bicycler averaging over 300 miles a month and more exercise on top of that.

Going back to camp after the siting, I started having severe pain in my left leg. The following morning found me in the emergency room in a local hospital. The date was September 12.

After weeks of tests, MRI's CT Scans on December 8 th they found out what was wrong. On December 12 they did a four way bypass.

I look forward to drawing a bull permit this year and going back after that bull.

Talk about busted.

One piece of advice . . . don't pass out in a cardiac procedures lab . . . they might cut you from stem to stern.[:o]

RE: How many got busted this year?

If you hunted deer much his year it is not a question of whether you got busted but rather how many times and how many of those you were aware of.
I had the obvious where the deer do a lot of snorting and wheezing, but I observed many more instances that were subtle yet definite "busts" by deer that would catch wind 50-70 yards away and change course, or deer that would pick up scent where I had walked in as long as 2 hours beforehand and alter their course because of it. The more hunting experience I gain the more I notice and become aware that I am being busted where in the past I wouldn't have.

RE: How many got busted this year?

I got busted twice that I know of. The first time was a doe that came in about five yards away. I was shaking so bad that I couldn't pull my bow back.(this was my first year of bow hunting, and I must have gotten deer fever.) She saw me shaking and ran back about twenty yards and kept watching me. I don't know if she was trying to figure out what I was or was worried that I might fall out of the tree. I was shaking so bad!!!
The second time I had six does come in at about fifteen yards, I picked the largest one and drew on her. The doe beside her spotted me . And I swear she barked at me. She sound just like my dog. She ran about twety yards and then barked again. I have heard dear blow before but this is the only time I have ever heard one bark!!!
I did have a succesful Year. taking my first deer with a bow, and one with my sot gun.

;) Yup! Almost stepped on a 10ptr. this season. Or maybe you should say I busted him. He rocketed out of a blow down I was easing about for a position I wanted to nestle into. Buck had the same idea and had settled into my spot. Scared the beejeezers outa me. All I could do was count pts. as he roared away from the spooky looking guy that had disturbed his mid-afternoon slumber. Correct idea, wrong timing but that is hunting as we all know.

RE: How many got busted this year?

This is my first year bow hunting and got busted by a yearling. It came in first and I knew that it was not alone. Saw a doe working in behind my stand. It was getting dark so if I was going to get a shot, things were going to have to happen soon. Moved my bow to stand up and try and get a shot at the doe and the yearling busted me. When it took off, the doe and another deer that I didn't see went also. Another lesson learned.
