Default CWD again.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I have a question. One of my buds in my area whose bows I work on, killed a couple deer with bow in Dekalb county here in Illinois.Anyhow a guys he knows had his deer tested from the same property and it tested positive for CWD.My bud called me and wanted to know what I knew about this, cause he had it processed,I told him what little I know, about not messing with the brain ,spine, bones or glandular stuff. His big worry is that he had his deer prossessed and it wasn't one that was tested at the deer check station. He want's to know what he should do with all the meat. What would you do?Thank's for any replies,I will also e-mail him this thread so he can read your post.Bill D>

Since the disease is a disease of the brain, it does not affect the meat, I would make sure to get around the spine and all and leave some room between the meat and the spine, just to be on the safe side! But to my knowledge it is ok to eat! But the strange thing is I did not hear anything about CWD down here (I would have thought the DNR would rave released something!!).

There has never been a reported case of sickness or death related to CWD and it's been out west for 30+ years. It's definitely in the whitetail population in the northern most tier of counties from Winnebago and east. With the meat being done at a processor, could be a chance that not all of the processed meat ended up being his deer, varies amongst processors how they operate. But I would suspect processors in these areas are now making sure to deliver customers' venison from only their deer. We have processors in our area who are sending in the heads to DNR (no charge) for testing when you take one in for processing. Testing results are posted within several weeks on DNR's website.
