spiketv drops all outdooor programming

i just read this weekend that spiketv, the old TNN, has decided to drop ALL of their outdoor programming! i already sent them a nasty e-mail letting them know what i thought. they told Mark Sosin, who has had a show for 20 years, that "men don't fish and hunt anymore". can you believe that one? i encourage everyone to tell everyone that they know about this, and to contact them. this is their homepage, if you don't believe it, check out their weekend schedule. www.spiketv.com show them just how many of us don't do any hunting and fishing anymore

Well this is what I sent them.

Why the hell are getting rid of the hunting and fishing shows?
"men don't fish and hunt anymore" is what I heard you told Mark Sosin who has had a show for over 20 years. Well, I guess my ba**s are fake and my parents have some explaining to do. I will not be watching your programming any longer. I will spread the word about what you said on every message board I frequent and suggest all my fellow outdoorsmen do the same.
Good day.
John

I'm pretty sure that MTV bought out TNN, changed the name to Spike TV and have reworked their line up at the beginning of the new year. MTV would rather promote teenage sex, drug use, theft, and other illegal acts such as animal harrassment on shows like Wild Boyz and at the same time, prove that they are humane by being anti hunting and anti fishing.

They are a bunch of hypocrites that are in part responsible for the lack of respect, responsibility and education in todays youth. I'm not saying they are the sole reason that kids are the way they are today, but they are a big player in it.

they had to make room for more "Japanese knocking each other into the mud" programing.

Done deal here. too. I was thinking more like there wasn't enough outdoor shows on t.v. Now, they're taking some off. Not good. Thanks for the heads up. Let's give 'em hell.

I will be sending my 2 cents as well. That channel is the biggest joke on television. All they play is star trek and cartoons seperated by 30 year old movies and Japanese shows. What a waste of air time!

I can't believe this!!!! [:@]

I just sent them a scathing email too. I don't agree with all the marijuana leafs on their website, but to each his own. Their hunting shows were the last little bit of TV sanctuary we have left!! I'm done watching them now and forever. Spike TV can kiss my a$$!!! [:@]

If you'd have bothered to take the time to click on the marijuana banner, you'd have found it's an anti-drug site. If you'd look at the owners of MTV and Spike, you'd see MTV is the MTV Network. Spike is owned by Viacom. Anyone know if MTV sold Spike to Viacom or is Viacom is the parent company of MTV Network?

As for them dropping their outdoor programming, I've been expecting that for two years, ever since they turned TNN into The National Network or 'The NEW TNN.' The ONLY real shocker is it took this long for them to do it. Maybe the Outdoor Life channel will pick up some of those shows and replace their bicycle crap with 'em.

I guess that they feel that all the "Real" men are into cars and how to jack em up or put a new damn exhaust on them. WTF cares about that!!??!! Cause that's all I see on Saturdays now. I keep turning to it hoping I'll see a hunting show someday and NOTHING.

I am surprised at some of the reactions to this. Only one person had the sense to say that this was expected sooner. Send all the emails you want. Go ahead and type out a good 4 pager with lots of harsh words. They won't be read. Period.

They don't care! They bought the network and they are going to do what they want with it. We could all band together and send them 80,000 emails and it wouldn't make a difference.

I simply don't watch it. I watch the Outdoor Channel. It has some good shows.

Well, I only partially agree with you...

You are correct to say that the emails wil go largely unread. If you are not part of their target audience, they are not going to care.

However, if you really want to reach any entertainment company, you have to hit them where it hurts - contact the advertisers on that network. I can gaurentee you that if an advertiser on SpikeTV go 80,000 emails saying they were going to stop watching ANY SpikeTV because of management decisions, they would contact management and then SpikeTV would listen.

Let it go and good riddance!

Personally, as a man and an outdoor sportsman I would not want to be associated with the network. Flaunting one's male machismo is similar to homosexuals flaunting their homosexuality. Both types are insecure. ;)

RE: spiketv drops all outdooor programming

Couple of things:

1. Spike TV, and it's parent company MTV Networks are owned by Viacom. Taken directly from the Viacom website:

Viacom's well-known brands include CBS, MTV, Nickelodeon, VH1, BET, Paramount Pictures, Viacom Outdoor, Infinity, UPN, Spike TV, TV Land, CMT: Country Music Television, Comedy Central, Showtime, Blockbuster, and Simon & Schuster.
2. Hunting shows do not generate ad revenue, plain and simple. In the broadcast industry ratings generate eyes, which in turn drives ad revenue. Hunting and fishing shows are the least profitible, in terms of overall ad revenue of any category of programming. They cater to such a small demographic category it is not worth a networks time to give up that air time on those shows when there are 2 networks that cater specifically to hunters. This was a long time coming, and I am also shocked it took this long.

I too am suprised the shows were not canceled sooner; however, I did send a response.

"This is in response to your cancellation of Hunting Shows. I think it sucks. These were a few of the only shows on your network worth watching."

Pluto 01-06-2004 09:25 AM

RE: spiketv drops all outdooor programming

I am also suprised it took so long. I have not watched the channel in a long while. Saturdays and Sundays, I am not in front of my tv. I am outside doing something.

As a side note. I am a member of Texas Trophy Hunters. In the last issue of the magazine they stated they will be moving from The Outdoor Channel (channel 153 on dishnetwork) to The Mens Channel (channel 221 on dishnetwork). They did not state the days or times but the said they were part of an outdoor block that would be repeated 3 times a week.

PS, the Mens Channel is part of the Turner Network. I currently is a home shoping network type channel.

Yea i wrote them also and i do not plan on watching that channel ever again until they put the hunting shows back on. it's as simple as that!

I assumed everyone knew this was coming. There was a post on here over a year ago by Dave Watson regarding the fact that MTV had bought out TNN and their (Realtree, Bushnell, etc) contracts had not been renewed and that 2003 would the final season of outdoor programming on that channel.

I wrote them this morning.......if this is true, I have no reason to watch this channel at all. And I told them so.
