does any1 shoot deer in the neck?

If I don't have a good shot at the lungs, I won't shoot! Although a neck shot could put the deer down right away, there is such a small area to hit and in such a high area of movement. Asking fo trouble, bow or gun!
Good Luck!

I think that the shock of a bullet going through the neck sends enough shock to shatter a main artery or the spine, So a dead on shot is not necessary like it would be with a bow. I'm sure you could just nick the animal and it would get away but you can do that aiming for the vitals too. I have never taken a neck shot but I have heard if you shoot them right where the base of the neck meats the shoulder that the shock will send them straight down even if it is not a direct hit to the spine. A guy on another forum said he tried this once and he has shot every deer this way since then and every one of them dropped in its tracks and didn't move another muscle.

I have to agree neck shot's are low percentage recoveries if you don't hit them right .I have taken 2 deer with neck shot's and dropped them on the spot .I only took these shot's because they were close about 20yrds. I wouldn't take this shot with a bow at all .

With a bow a neck shot is out of the question.
With a gun, unless you are know the anatomy of the neck VERY well and you know you are going to hit right where you are aiming and the deer is perfectly still, it is a bad shot!

Ok I'll probably get hammered for this but here is my take.
I only shoot does with a gun and all have been neck shots. I practice shooting and am confident in shot placement. All animals dropped in their tracks. Seems to me that is a quick and ethical method. I've seen a number of deer shot in the boiler room and run off to eventually expire. The time to expire was longer than the neck shot.
As "the nuge15" mentioned the shock of the bullet causes arteries to explode.
Not sure how the Anti's can gain anymore ammunition on that then they already think they have on hunters.
Archery neck shot not a chance folks.

With a bow, no way!!!!!!!!!
With a gun, it is lethal and ethical. I don't know where you guys are getting this "lost deer" talk. Honestly. I have shot two deer in the neck with my rifle and both dropped in their tracks. I know I will get the reply "you were lucky"..... no I wasn't. A bullet, when it hits a deer, explodes and sends a shock wave through the deer. That explosion is enough to break a neck bone! My grandfather is a firm believer in neck shots and guess how many deer I have seen him loose!!!!!!!! None.
It is easier to say "A neck shot isn't good and ethical" than to stand up and agree that a neck shot is lethal shot.
