Default Elk with your bow?

Has anyone gotten any elk with their bows? What type of arrow/ head were you using and how far did you shoot.... any stories or pics would be awesome.
Just wanting to hear some good ol' elk hunting stories.

Lot of elk with my bow. Use thunderhead 100 for my broadhead and now use carbon shafts with my new PSE Carrera bow. Most of my elk were killed with an old PSE Intruder bow and fat aluminum arrows. All have been shot at 35 yards or less. Two from a tree with an old board nailed on it and rest from the ground in the bushes. All were lung shots and all but three died within 200 yards of being shot. If you haven't ever hunted elk you should and I believe anyone that can stalk good and hunt with a bow can kill elk. Most of my elk have been cows but have shot 340+ bulls. Just real hard to get drawn here for bull and can't afford to buy tags out of state. Good luck.

Here is an elk that I shot this year. It was a twenty yard shot with my Mathews SQ2 pulling around 67 pounds. I use an alum. Easton arrow tipped with a Muzzy 3 blade 100 grain broadhead.

And the next one is my buddies cow that he shot with the same bow (not my bow, we have the same), aluminum arrows also, but he tips his with thunderheads.

My Dad has also shot a hand full of elk with his Mathews pulling closer to 64 pounds. He always used those cabelas broadheads. Laser Mags I think they are called.

IL_BOW_MAN: Super elk shots, nice going fellas! I'm glad to hear about you choice of broadheads. My son shoots your Muzzies & I favor your buddies Thunderheads. Nothing like using quality for clean kills!

Yup, took a bull elk with my bow. You can read the story on www.asatcamo.com then click ASAT believers but I'll give you a short version. Opening morning of the season found us at about 10,000 ft buglin for bulls. At approx 9 am one responded and he was close. We back off to cross a creek which was between us figuring he wouldn't cross it. While slippin in close we bugled again and the bull was all but on top of us. Slippin just a few yards and bam, there he stood staring our direction.....rely on the camo, rely on the camo...and it worked....he moved to our left and we set up....while I was peeling off my pack and nocking an arrow I looked up to see the bull watching me at a mere 35 yards....damn I thought...but then again, rely on the camo, rely on the camo...your invisible.....and then the bull moved to my left.....I drew as his head went behind a tree and he swung his head to look for the movement....as he stared over my shoulder at the caller some 20 yards behind me I shuddered to hold my bow at full draw...it was a waiting game and I wasn't about to lose.....I rest the bow at full draw on my knee and used my neck and jaw to help hold at full draw....as the bull stepped clear of the brush around the base of the tree I rose to form and released the arrow passing through the bull at 33 yards. The bull whirled and ran about 50-60 yards and swaggered, fell back, got up, side stepped and fell for good. I fell to my knees in exhaustion trying to suck wind from the thin air.....recovering we retrieved my arrow and followed the huge blood trail to my first bull elk. At 33 yards I had my 20,30,and 40 yard pin on the bull....holding just a touch high and the bull walking caused me to hit just back catching his liver.

The shot, again 33 yards from a Hoyt Tenacity, Beman Trophy Hunters 70-90's with 100 grain 3 blade Muzzy's on outserts at about 295 fps.

Here's the pic.

Yep, I am running 4 for 4 now. I took smaller bulls until this year. This year I filled the freezer with a cow the first day and went back out on a second elk tag for a bigger bull. I ended up taking a guy involved in a swap hunt and he killed a very nice 6x6. I use easton xx78 2314 with a 100 gr cut on inpact blade. The penetration is unreal. Nothing but pass throughs with 1 bull dying just 40 yrds from where I shot him. I started using the Phantom broadheads. They are great.

This is my 4th bull in 4 years.......All have been taken w/ muzzy's (Used a snuffer on this bull also....long story) and various 70 lb. bows (MQ1 this year). Shots have ranged from 15-35 yards and longest recovery was about 80 yards. Do it once and you'll be hooked!!!!
