Do you practice in low light?

I was doing some practice off my deck yesterday getting ready for next year and corrected something I had been doing which improved my groups a lot. Any how after dinner the sun was setting and as I looked out from the deck at my target which is in a wooded area, I thought, that looks just like it does on stand, so I shot until I could not see the pins at all anymore. It really surprised me how little light you can shoot in well even though you can barely see the pins. How many of you practice as the sun sets or rises?

Yup. I shoot a lot out back in the summer until it's too dark to see.

I was really surprised that I shot my tightest group when it was the darkest, I kind of wonder if it was me concentrating harder due to the low light?

Taz,

Yes, I practice in the evenings, after sun set under low light conditions. I use ground blinds both natural and commercial. The double bull casts a pretty good shadow. Also most of my stands are positioned under a thick canopy of coniferous trees. The sun can be shining in a clear cut at noon, yet back a 100 yards in the timber, I am hunting in low light conditions.

RE: Do you practice in low light?

No, but I should! Two bucks I've taken were taken in low-light conditions and were darn near shots I passed because of it. I have similar situations as Shed1, where it may be clear and the sun still on the horizon but where I'm at is much, much darker. I need to change my peep also because the one I have is too small and lets very little light in.

This time of the year I have no choice. If I didn't practice in low light I wouldn't practice at all. By the time I get home and setup I usually only have about a half hour of daylight left. The NoPeep makes shooting in low light almost too easy.

Just like to add, that the tritium fiber optics from true glow or the eradicator peepless sight system are excellent in low light.

I love to test my limits and darkness is definitely a way to find them. And I have to totally agree with Turc also.
Yup Taz, I find that I'll do a lot better than I expect myself to under those conditions. Strange huh?

RE: Do you practice in low light?

I often shoot in lowlight conditions.

On our indoor range we can set the lights to nearly any setting between complete dark and very bright light. Four switches are connected to four different rows of lights.

I would love to install a dimmer... but with those lights, I think it might burn them out a lot faster. Too expensive, I think.

Also... our outdoor range has a few 3D targets set around the hay targets... as well as an elevated platform from which to shoot... and broadhead targets.

For our members, there is really no excuse when it comes to the lack of practice. We have everything they need... and then some.

Taz I practice in all light conditions as well as in all weather conditions
the reason I do this is when I do get to go hunting the weather and light are never going to be perfect.

not in summer..kinda hard at 20 plus hours of light LOL! I do shoot in low light or moon light mainly for what little preditor calling I do. Was planning on going out this weekend if it gets cold again...if not there is no sense, for some reason they dont bother with the calls on the warmer days...oh well!

I always practice in low light. We even shoot 3D in pitch black, with lights mounted to our bows. We shoot raccoons in trees, carp in ponds. Etc. It's a blast. They even give a cash reward to the most unique, bow mounted light.

I do a lot of practicing at sunset...really helps out a lot. I'm not much of an early bird though(unless I'm hunting:)), so I think I'll pass on practicing at the crack of dawn.

yea i try to shoot at the end of daylight as much as i can. It makes me more comfortable when it is time to hunt.

RE: Do you practice in low light?

I try to practice in low light as much as possible. Most of my winter shooting is inside though, so it's all pretty well lit shooting. During the spring and fall I'll shoot later in the day, and try to get some post-sunset shooting in. I have shot a caribou at 1:30am, but not much need for low light practice there, the bloody sun was still up!

RE: Do you practice in low light?

Now that I'm back to shooting instinctive with a recurve, it's a lot easier to shoot at light's end. As long as I can see well enough to tell the distance and pick a spot I'm OK. Now I just need em to extend the shooting hours a little. LOL

RE: Do you practice in low light?

Sure do, lots of times I practice until dark. In the off season I will get out in the yard before sunrise on the weekends (I get up early everyday), and fire away. The neighbors think I am nuts, but they don't tell me that while I am shooting.

Oh yeah. I practice in low light conditions.
Hey shed & stinky. I'm going to take your advice and try the peepless sight system.

RE: Do you practice in low light?

I was the first to enter the indoor range I shoot at & turned on the lights. I didn't realize there were some I hadn't turned on right over the butts. It seemed pretty dim but I shot anyways. Some other people came in & turned on the rest of the lights & my groups opened up. I agree, I was concentrating harder when it was harder to see. I'll do more of it on purpose now.

YES, OFF AND ON, HAVEN'T SHOT IN A WHILE THOUGH.

RE: Do you practice in low light?

no, I don't. I also don't stay in the woods till it's dark, either, so that is a shot I'm not in the need of preparing for.

RE: Do you practice in low light?

I do practice under low light conditions, but, I only stay in the stand that long if I`m pinned down. If it is too dark to catch it on camera, I am usually packing it in. That is normally the end of legal shooting time where I hunt, anyhow.

RE: Do you practice in low light?

Yep. After reading about someone else doing this, I even lite a candle and set it in front of the target butt in the pitch black and shoot at the flame from 15-20 paces. Of course, I'd never take a shot at live game in those conditions, but it sure does raise the level of concentration some.

RE: Do you practice in low light?

Yep, I practice when I can, whether that's during high noon or the jet blackness of a new moon at midnight. Shooting stickbows, I have no sights to struggle seeing, just the target. There's no greater practice for instinctive shooting than when it's so dark you can't see the end of the arrow on your bow. A candle flame at 20 yards makes a great target. :^)
