What' s the closest you ever got to a deer while hunting?
 

A couple of week ago my cousin was beside a bush on the ground along a pipeline. He heard movement coming from the woods behind him. He turned around to see a small 4 point headed right at him. He was not legal so he let the buck keep coming. The deer walked right up to the same bush my cousin was at and peered through to see what was on the other side. They were actually nose to nose. Steve said he could have stuck his toungue out and licked the deer right on the nose. The buck just walked around the bush and slowly crossed the pipeline and into the other side. It was almost as if the deer wanted to say ha ha you can' t shoot me! Even so it was still a pretty exciting hunt.

After a rattling sequence while sitting on a stump, a 6 pointer semi-circled me and came close enough that I could have touched his nose with my bow. After a few minutes he finally figured out I was not his buddy and he left quickly.

2nd time was after shooting a large 11 pointer while standing behind a large water oak tree, the buck ran on the opposite side scaring the bedickens out of me! Last scare he put into anybody.;)

Crossing a field to my stand a little late in the morning when a deer spotted me, circled from across the open field and came up behind me five feet away. He started pawing the ground trying to make me move. I jumped and whirled around - the deer went five feet in the air and was running in place like a cartoon. It was rather funny. Same field, same scenario - little too late getting out, a fawn came out of the pines and headed toward me. He didn' t know what I was and curiosity got the best of him. He got within a hand reach away trying to smell me. Wind was against him and with me, so he never did figure it out until I started talking to him. After a few words, he decided I wasn' t his friend and turned around walking away. He would stop every five yards and look back. Funny things those deer are.

I have had deer cross within 4 or 5 yards of me on one or two occasions...though they were moving relatively fast at the time....;)

About 18 inches from his nose to mine. I could count his eyelashes. A person just does not realize how small a deer is untill this happens. That morning was the hilight of my year.

Hunting in PA a few years back two buddies of mine were hiking out at mid-day and pushed some does right my way. I was leaning up against a pine tree and one of the does came right passed me. I could have close-lined her...she was about 1 foot away and only walking fast, not trotting or on the dead run.

1st time was close enough to slap a button on the butt:D
2nd time had a doe blow snot over the back of my head,neck and shoulders.
I did not know she was there untill she blew.

About three or four feet.Yesterday I had four hen Turkeys at about ten feet. Both of the ground.

Last season I was ground hunting because I couldn' t climb a tree due to having two broken legs. I was sitting on a stump with som brush piled around me. I am sure I stuck out like a sore thumb. Do doe and fawn come walking by and I wasn' t really paying attention. By the time I noticed them they were looking right at me from about 10 yards. We played the " who can move first game" . Finally she must have been satisified that I was just an odd looking stump. She walked right up to me to check me out better. I just couldn' t take it any more. She stood about 2 feet from my face and I just cracked up laughing. I am sure I scared the poop out of her and her fawn but it was the most fun I had hunting all season.

a couple of years ago, my friend and i were just going into the woods in the afternoon and heard a buck grunt, so my friend grunted back, and a spike came running in and its head was to the ground and slobber was just running out of his mouth, he came right to my boot and smelled it and then kept going, my friend actually got his camera out and took a pic but the buck was about 12 feet behind by that time... it was really neet....

Some guys posted on here and I read about others in a mag that would have competitions to see who could touch one first. They would sit downwind of a campfire and get the smoke all over them, stand behind a tree on a well-used path and reach out and grab hair out of the deer' s back. One guy tried it and when he pulled on the hair, he slipped in the mud and got under the doe. She proceeded to stomp the hell out of him and pee all over him. That would be fun to explain at the deer camp.

My personal best is about 10 feet while hunting from the ground. Thankfully they were up wind. Never knew I was there. :)

About 10 1/2 feet. it was 3 bow lengths.

A doe came from down wind as I had curiosity scent on my silencers. I was leaning against a tree wtching a trail uphill. I heard a noise and peered around the tree, as the doe peered around also. I was holding my recurve knocked and ready, and by the time It was up and drawn the doe was gone. 3 Leaps and it vanished, that was the quickest I had seen anything ever move.

It' s been a few years, but one morning after I got out of the stand, I decided to sit down next to a tree and watch this hollow to see if there was any deer movement. It was drizzling rain and I fell a sleep with my back to the tree. I was awakened by a doe nudging me on the shoulder with her nose to see what I was. It startled me and I jumped and the doe almost did a backflip.

A few weeks aao i was on the ground and had a large doe come with in arms reach of me. It was awesome. What a rush. Only problem.....I wanted to draw...but couldn' t.

Over 30 years ago I had a doe walk by a bush I was hiding in. I was dead set on shooting a buck so, I just gently poked it with the arrow. Funny, but it had almost no reaction and just kept on walking.

I was walking to camp from my stand when I heard some deer rustlin the leaves over the next ridge. Quickly i realized they were coming right at me. I got off the trail and laid down in the brush. I thought they' d never know I was there. Well they did. Three deer were within 10 feet of me and stopped. They stomped and stomped trying to get me to move. This lasted 2-3 minutes. Then one circled down wind about 3 ft away, gotta good nosefull and that was that.

LOL....If that happened to me the next thing I would remember is the Doctor yelling " CLEAR!"

I had 2 doe' s standing 10 feet in front of me and my bow was on the ground.
I could do nothing more than sitting still and blaming myself for falling asleep.
The deer spooked me from a little nap.;)[:' (]

I took my two year old daughter for a walk through the woods behind my house on Labor Day. We heard what sounded like a steamroller coming through the woods so I knelt down and pulled her close to me. We see a herd of deer coming right at us with a small doe in the lead. She got ten feet from us going full tilt and slammed on the brakes on the wet leaves and did a 360 circle. She stopped with her nose about 10 inches from my daughter' s nose. I could see the deer trembling and staring directly into my daughter' s eyes. I could feel my daughter trembling. Both stopped trembling at the same time and I could see my daughter smiling. The doe walked off quietly. The rest of the herd followed and stopped one by one about 6 feet from us - including an enormous 10 pointer. We watched as he worked quickly to find us. His head swiveled slower and slower until he was looking right at us. We could hear him breathing. He too walked off slowly. In all 17 deer (eight bucks with at least 6 points) did this over a two minute period. My daughter asks at least once a week if we can go for another walk through the woods. And, each day when I get home from work she tells me if she saw any deer today. It' s great having a child that loves deer as much as me!

I' ve stillhunted inside of 20 yds to many deer. Stalked a few within that range, too. The closest stalk I pulled was 7 yds to a bedded doe, but I missed when my arrow struck one of the umpteen buttonbush shoots growing up just in front of where she was bedded. [>:] When still on the ground, several have come within spitting distance; a few within an arm' s length. A doe once jumped over my head as I crouched down on the edge of a thicket.

Last year I had a doe sniff a tree that i had climbed up (climbing stand) the bottle that i had been spiiting my redman in tipped over earlier an she had been sniffing it I figured it was the molasses in the ' baccer. One of dad' s friends was sittin in a bush an had a doe to look him eye to eye just feet from him, not knowing wether this was for truth or not he continued sayin that he gave her a right hook, he did come out of the woods with a doe witha swelled eye, maybe he did hit her or not. Still a good story

I normally only hunt from a stand so I don' t have all the neat experiences most of you do.

I got out of my climber early in bow season this year and walked to a point of the woods where it ran into a cut corn field. I just knelt there watching and waiting for my buddies to come out. I heard something and there was a small buck walking right for me. I waited and he came within about 5 yards then saw me and whirled and ran about 20-30 yards away. He wasn' t sure what I was cause he slowly came back to check me out again. This time he came to about 8-10 yards before he gave me the deer finger.

Years ago I was stalking in a light drizzle and almost stepped on a red fox[:o] I don' t know who was the most frightened me or the fox. I think it was the fox because it left scratch marks about 2 feet long when it took off.:D

I stillhunt/stalk for deer in New England. I can usually stalk to within 20 yards of deer. A good percentage of the time it is in the 10-15 yard range. On one occasion I came out of dense laurel, pushing my way through the thickets making a ton of noise, only to come out and see a deer staring at me 5 yards away.

This didn' t happen to me, but in honor of my dad, I will tell his story.

He pulled a Jurasic Park one day at the property. He heard rumbling behind him and then felt the ground. He thought it was an earthquake, but when he looked behind him he realized it was a heard of about 200 deer heading right at him full tilt. He ducked behind a stump on the edge of the field he was standing by and the deer went over the top of him. Then he changed his shorts.

Two feet or so...a doe walked right in on me when I was sitting against a tree. I decide to let her keep coming. At two feet I yell at the deer and scare the bejesus out of it. It was really funny watching her high tail it out of there.:D

My first year hunting three years ago I had four does come right up to me. The small lead doe sniffed the end of my gun barrel. This year bowhuunting the closest buck was a four point that came up to about 10 feet. I could see the drool hanging from his lip. The closest doe came to about 10 feet also. I called her in by making a bleating sound with my mouth. She never knew I was there...

i have touched a fawn before, tried to pick it up but it kicked free and swelled up my knee bit. we were coming down my road in the rain and i saw a fawn running circles on the dam of the lake and then just drop. Well i put on some gloves and got ready to go catch it. I snuck over there and got within inches of it. it was balled up like a flattened out basketball. I lunged at it, got ahold of it, tried to stnad up and get a better grip on it before it kicked me in the face. After about 5 near groin misses i dropped it and it smoked my knee. Amazing how those tiny little things can kick. It hit the ground on all 4 feet, jumped a couple steps and stopped. i grabbed some grass in my hand and tried to feed it(it was probably too young for grass i guess but it would have felt weird sticking my nipple out to it.....:D) it sniffed the grass and then trotted off. this was the day after a BAD storm, im guessing the fawn got seperated from its momma in the storm. Man it owuld have been awesome to have a pet deer.

I was walking my uncle to his stand in the darkness early one morning. My uncle had his flashlight out and was in the lead when he noticed two sets of eyes just 5 yards away. He stopped and kept the light on them as I got next to him. We just stood still holding the light on them as the two does started to walk towards us. The bigger doe stopped about 3 feet away but the smaller one walked right up to the flash light until it hit her nose. Then in a FLASH those deer were gone! I think the little one didnt really know how far away the light was and didnt expect something to hit its nose. We still talk about that day.

I had a buck standing directly under my low platform (I' m only up 8 ft in that one - I could have jumped on his back !) He finally took a leap backward and gave me a broadside shot ..... I got him, but probably waited 3 minutes for him to give me the shot.

Most bizzare thing I' ll ever see in the woods. My buddy and I are walking down a trail to move a treestand. We are in everyday clothes and probably stink to high heaven. We pop into a little swail field and look up and a deer is heading for the trail. Only about 30 yards away. We both stop and kinda lean against a couple of trees on the edge of the trail. Make a long story short he finally is right next to us, I mean about 1 foot and he stops. He had to know we were humans. I don' t understand what happened at all. Maybe someones pet?? Anyway, I look at my buddy and he looks at me and we shrug our shoulders. I knew what he was thinking and likewise. So we reached out and pet the deer!!!!! Unbelievable. I would never believe this if it didnt' happen to me. The deer never bolted away. Just kinda hopped about 20 yards then started walking again after we touched it.

I had a mule deer 3 years ago get so close (and turn and look the other way) that I kicked at her, grazing her side. She kinda grunted in surprise and got the hell out of there.

I' m certain she thought she was caught, right then and there. Really a cool encounter.

Well, I didn' t really get close to it, it got close to me. Like 3 feet away, both of us on the ground. Little button buck ran up to me sliding to a stop and I' m sitting there relaxing and smoking a cigarette. My bow and already dead deer were about 10 feet away.

Took my 9 yr. old stepson turkey hunting for the first time last spring. We set-up in the edge of a field and watched three deer feed right towards us. One of the does got within 5 ft. of us before I scared it off...didn' t want it to step on us!

The kid thought it was the coolest thing in the world...was a new experience for both of us.
