What a Huntin' Week! My 1st Kill!!!
#1
Well what a week I had hunting in the North Keettle Moraine State Forest! I went out on Monday night and planned on driving back and forth from home all week 50 miles each way and hitting night time traffic, which can suck at times and it did monday night! But before I left the woods I ran across a hunting buddy that I' ve become friends with and he said he ws camping out all week at Mauthe lake camp ground with his son and nephew until Sunday! So on Tuesday I bust out all my camping gear and make a week of it!
On tuesday night I had a Spike about 20ft from me in the tall grass but he offered no shot! I could only see him from the neck up since I was hunting from the ground! This got my heart rate going pretty good!
Then I got the bad news about the weather that was on the way! Brutal winds!
I tried to hunt the morning on Wednsday and the wind was a bit much so I did some walking and stalking! I seen about 8 Does in a field about 150 yards, so I try my luck at sneaking up from downwind got within 60 yards and got busted by a Doe that was to my left thet I didn' t even know was there. She came running past me and then the rest of them left with her! I was kinda bummed but thats hunting! By this time it was 4:10 so I go hike over to another field and see if anything is in there. I see 2 Does about 200 yards on the edge. I go thru the pines to come from downwind, by this time it was snowing side ways in my face. I get within 20 yards and start to belly crawl. One of the Does kinda busts my thru some thickets but is not sure and only goes about 10 yards and stops. The other didn' t budge and keeps on grazing. I needed to get a clear shot so I move up about 5 yards. I wait for her to graze on over to a clear lane and I am at full draw for about a lifetime and the first doe pops up and busts me and the both Jet! I sure was loving it. Not them bustin me but the thrill of the hunt!
Thursday morning is pretty slow but Thurdays night is good! I see a few deer but all out of range and in the distance. So I start using " The Can" and not 10 minutes later I see a Buck coming towards me nose to the ground! He get to this ridge and stops for a minute looks around. By this time I am pretty fired up. He turns my way and gets 15 yards under me and I draw and my arrow and it comes un nocked when I get almost all the way back! I was bummed! So a wind rolls thru and I let off and the buck walks around a bit more behind me. I was shaking so bad by this time! Then he turns and stops in the same spot and I draw and the same thing, my arrow comes unnocked. He was a nice 6-pointer. He never knew I was there! That sure was fun! It gets dark and I get down and go back to camp and shoot the sh*t with the fellas!
Needless to say Friday morning rolls around and I sure ws ready to go! I get in my stand about 5:10 and wait for the sunrise. Around 7am a deer shows up off in the distance and heads towards me. I get ready and he kinda seems a bit nervous and never gives me a clear shot. He goes down the ridge and not 5 minutes later here he comes runnig up the ridge to my left. I bleat and stop him at 15 yards and release and he jumps the string and I hit him in the hind quaters. My arrow passes thru and there is blood every where and he drops 10 feet away. I was shaking because the was my first deer kill ever!!!! I waited for a few and before I get down I call my dad in Michigan and tell him whats up and then A " HUGE" 8-Pointer pops up over the ridge at 25 yards so I hang up with my dad and grab my bow. He walks over to the dead deer sniffs him for a bit and walks off nose to the ground!!!!!! I called my dad back and tell him I got no shot off at the buck.
So I get down a little while later and go over to my downed deer and find out he was a button buck! I was very happy either way because this ws my first deer in 5 years of bowhunting and my first deer kill ever!!!!!!! I learned alot about bowhunting this past week and hope to put it all to good use! I can' t wait to get out again this week! I took a bunch of pics and will post them soon! I know thhis post was a bit long but I wanted to share this great week I had![:-]
