Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
Hey there.... Get a load of this....
I was just talking to another guy at work, out in the workshop, that I didn' t know was a bow hunter. I mean, I heard he hunted and belongs to a big hunt club and stuff like that (he' s kind of arrogant and junk, but I guess he' s alright). Anyway, I was telling him about my old, reliable, " Ebay special" PSE Edge 1000 lefty bow that I got two seasons ago, and how I had it all setup by the bow shop for about $100 bucks more. I like it and it' s great! [:-] Details.... 1996 PSE Edge 1000 lefty bow from Ebay ($75.00 winning bid) 41" axle to axle Common round PSE Vortex dual cam system 65# draw weight, 65% let-off 30" draw length Tru-glo 3 pin sights (20,30,40 yard) TM Hunter rest Donut peep sight Rubber whisker string silencers 6" stablizer and wrist strap Release: Tru-fire 3 finger, " crackshot" Arrows: 31" Easton XX75, #2315' s Tips: 125gr field tips and 125gr Thunderheads Anyway, after I told all these details to the guy, he was dissing my old PSE bow! [:@] He was like, " Man, get yourself a Martin or a new Hoyt. That old bow won' t go through a deer! It sounds like it' s too heavy anyways. Not only that, it' s probably way too slow compared to today' s bows. 41" ATA? Man, that' s way too big to use in a tree stand!" GIMME A BREAK!!!! I wanted to smack the guy upside the head!! [:@][>:][:' (] I' ve been shooting this bow for about 2 years now. I like it and am comfortable with it. I can handle it as I' m 6' and 210lbs and don' t struggle to pull back 65#' s. WTF is wrong with some people?!? [:@] Let me ask you guys... What is so wrong with using an old ' 96 model PSE bow? It' s a great shooter and was checked out my the bow shop and is square and true and stuff. I like it and have confidence in my ability with it. Thanks... Butch |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
There is nothing wrong with using an older bow. Most of my friends have them. Granted, newer bows are better, but older ones work. I would get together with this guy and out shoot him. See how he likes that.

RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
I wonder how the indians killed there deer with bows? I mean everyone is hung up on speed these days.
good luck |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
" Man, get yourself a Martin or a new Hoyt. That old bow won' t go through a deer! This guy is a moron, If you cant take a deer with 1996 compound at 65#, than how they were taking bigger game 20-30yrs ago? |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
Here' s an old bow story. I bought a brand new Hoyt bow around 1987. I bought another bow a few years later and sold the Hoyt and all accessories to one of my buddies for $100. He used it for ten years or so and upgraded to a new bow in 2002. I bought the old Hoyt back for $50 to use as a backup bow. The farmers son wanted to take up bowhunting this year so I gave the kid the bow. The bow is still in good shape and now three hunters have had a chance to cut there teeth with it. Pretty cool.:)
The point is...There is nothing wrong with your equipment if you are comfortable with it. It' s yours and you are happy and confident. By the way...That old Hoyt from 1987 has never had any problems with passthroughs...Tell the guy to stuff it.[:-] |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
When you have a nice buck or whatever in your peep sights, how old or what kind of bow doesnt matter, period [:-]
|
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
ButchA:
Tell your co-worker that personally said he is full of it and his eye color has to be brown. Accuracy, not speed, is what kills. Heavy computes to steady and less post-fire shock and vibration. In addition, if he cannot easily handle a 41" ATA bow in stand, he must be hunting in an untrimmed spruce tree. I do believe it is time to tell the " Gucci" and " gadget" crowd where they can put their gear. The " stuff" really gets wearisome, doesn' t it? |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
He is full of BS. Nothing wrong with your as long as you shoot it well and it does the job. Getting a passthrough can be done with just about any bow as long as the shot placement is correct.
|
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
I' m with you Butch.
I shoot a PSE ThunderFlight Expess that I bought back in 1994. Still kills deer. If you want to get this guy back you should invite his to go shoot some day. Be a gentelman and let him shoot first and then stuff your arrow right down his shaft. That will shut him up. well maybe not. he might cry about his arrow....;) |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
Let' s see... the Native Americans used a carved down sprag of hickory or whatever kind of wood with a piece of cat gut strung between the ends. Cedar shafts, fletched with turkey feathers and hand-made broadheads (attached to the shaft with more cat gut). Camo? They didn' t have Hydrofleece, ASAT... how about skins from the deer or buff they shot the year before - off which they tanned the hides themselves. AND THEY GOT DEER.
|
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
Wow..... Thanks, guys! [:-]
Yeah, the co-worker is a bit full of himself, ain' t he? [:' (] I know that when I draw back with a #2315 arrow and 125gr field tip, look through the peep site at the 30 yard pin, see the center bullseye at 30 yards away on my target bag... WHAMMO!! I will nail the exact center of the bullseye. Same as if I see a nice 8 pointer come into range and give me a nice broadside shot. Aim behind the shoulder, right in the middle, and I will have venison in my freezer! [:-] Thanks again.... Butch |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
Glad to see there' s other members in the old bow club. I' m using a 1990 Hoyt Pro Vantage. Heavy as a chevy compared to the new Havotecs and such, but it killed deer in the early 90' s and did last year as well.
I just don' t buy the crap that you need new bows to shoot deer or good scores or whatever. The Hoyt team was using the Pro Vantages in the early 90' s to shoot perfect scores in tournaments at that time, juast as the PSE teams may have used your bow in the mid 90' s. Did the targets get smaller or the distances longer? Have the deer developed some sort of new armor that stops 278 fps arrows tipped with muzzies and thunderheads in the last 13 years? Are the deer faster or tougher, as a whole? BS, I say.[:@] If it would kill a deer when it was the latest, greatest, it' ll kill a deer now. I' ll use my money to buy ASAT!!! Then I can sell my bow and just bop the deer on the head as they walk past me.:D;) |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
Some people just seem to get hung up on having to have the newest equipment.....if it works for you just shoot and enjoy........
I have to go... my pager is vibrating, my cell phone is ringing, I need to get to my treestand before my solar powered feeder goes off and I have to pick up batteries for my GPS, if I can just find the remote to my truck.:D:D:D |

RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
Apparantly this guy doesn' t know what he' s talking about. Did he really suggest a Hoyt or a Martin? That alone shoots his credibility out the door! :D
|
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
I shot a High Country for 9 years..great bow..still is......my problem was I shot a new Mathews Legacy and had to have one...........I didn' t get the Legacy, it ATA is shorter than I like.......
I found a great deal on a Mathews MQ1........perfect ATA and it fits me to a T. I bought the MQ1 for $300..........couldn' t pass that up. Some people have to have a new bow every year, I guess maybe some people are way better off than some of the rest of us........cuz I plan on shooting the MQ1 til the thing just won' t shoot anymore..... You should have told that guy where to get off........... |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
Butch,
If you like to shoot your bow then it' ll work fine for ya...but maybe he was on to something when he noticed you were shooting a PSE...;):D Sounds like you got a good setup though, stick it to them deer! Good luck huntin! |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
I wish I could find a decent old bow. Being a finger shooter, not many choices now days. I prefer 43" ata minimum.
Apparantly this guy doesn' t know what he' s talking about. Did he really suggest a Hoyt or a Martin? That alone shoots his credibility out the door! |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
I just started bowhunting this year and borrowed a friend' s PSE Baby-G. It is 2 or 3 years old and I was shooting just fine out to 30 yards with it. My hunting buddy uses ' 96 Mathews Ultralight and it still can hit a bullseye and kill a deer just fine. As others have said. It is about you and not so much about the bow. Any bow that is in good working and does what you want it to do is all the bow you need. If you want a bow with all the bells and whistles, that is fine, but if you get the kill with a new bow or a 30 year old bow, the deer is just as dead. [8D]
|
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
I' m still shooting an early 80' s Darton Trailmaster. [:-]
I want a new bow but can' t really justify it right now. When the kids get a littler older and I can spend more time in the woods (with them along of course), then I' ll go for it. But for now, if I want to get out with a bow, that' s what I' m using. |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
If what this guy said is true than I' d never shoot a deer. I use the same PSE I started with 4 years ago and it was used then!!!!!
I wouldn' t trade it for the world. It' s a heck of a lot quieter than the new rocket slingers they' ve got out. |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
I' ve got a " fast" modern bow that I shoot because its new to me. But I' ve also got the same PSE 1000C in right hand and can tell you it is a sweet shooting bow. Its harder to make a mistake with and easy to maintain. I started with the PSE used from a pawn shop to get me used to shooting a bow then went to the jennings for speed. Now I' m fighting the jennings to get it as quiet as the pse.
|
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
Yeh, tell him to stuff it. My back up is a PSE SR 1000, probably the same bow with a different year model. I bought it off the PSE truck before they were in stores. Anyway, it' s set at 76 pounds, shooting 525 grains tipped with Thunderheads at 252 fps. It shot through just about every deer I ever shot with it. It was my primary bow for about 8 years. I took multiple deer in everyone of those years. I love the Synergy wheels. Once tuned it stays there. It doesn' t chew up strings and cables like my new one cam. It is a tad heavy, but hey...we' re big boys. We can handle it.:D[:-]

RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
I still have my backup bow. PSE Fire-Flite Elite from about 10 years ago. Set at 85lbs and still works fine. :)
|
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
Did he really suggest a Hoyt or a Martin? That alone shoots his credibility out the door! Them are fightin' words! :) |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
Reference him to the big KS buck i shot on Sunday (I have threads open on it) and show him the huge hold my wimpy 52# longbow with 425 gr carbon arrows tipped with Thunderheads tore ! The guys an idiot to know a 2 year old compound as
" . That old bow won' t go through a deer! It sounds like it' s too heavy anyways. Not only that, it' s probably way too slow compared to today' s bows. 41" ATA? Man, that' s way too big to use in a tree stand!" My bow is 64" and my arrows go about 175 fps or so .... :) |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
Stick bows have been killing deer for 10,000 years, but your 7 year old bow is too old. :D:D
|
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
I hunted with an old Proline (circa ' 86) I bought from the factory up here in Hastings, Mich for 17 years. I dropped it out of my treestand this summer practicing (long story) any how, I would probably be out in the woods with it again this year had the stabilizer not snapped out of the laminated wooden riser [:' (]. I agree with the other guys here, bring him in a nice set of horns as a side dish to the crow. Good Luck this season.
|
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
i used to shoot a old bear bow slow as hill but it will still kill deer.then i shot a cheap american supreme bow and it was a fair bow,but i got me a browning tornado and i am in love.there is nothing wrong with a old bow to hunt with. when you kill a monster deer show him and tell him and then he will feel retarted.
go deep hunt hard.;) |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
Zelazny' s kill with the gear he specified tends to take the wind out of the speed and energy arguments. :)
|
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
I' m shooting a 94 0r 95 model HC Machined Supreme, had it that long too. Ain' t nothing wrong with it, but I' m switching to something else after the first of the year. My oldest boy has outgrown his old bow, so I' m giving him mine........Daddy gets a new bow!:D

[8D] What a heck of a bow, ain' t it? It is my first ever bow and and I enjoy going out hunting with it and practicing in the backyard. It does what I want and is accurate. Butch |

RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
Seems like everybody has to be talkin' smack these days. Like everyone is still in Jr. High and talkin' about cars or trucks or something.;)
Your bow should be fine. If you shoot it well, what could the problem be? Oh, that' s right. If ya shoot a deer with an old bow like that, and get a double-lung pass through, the deer will only lay there playin' ' possum ' till ya go over to check on it, then it will get up and run off laughin' or somethin' .[&:] I still have an old bow (Darton Viper) and it has outshot many bows I have bought to try to replace it with something " better." I have stopped trying to do that, and will keep this bow for good.:D |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
My brother has an early 90' s PSE that has killed many dozens of deer. He puts a notch on his bow after each kill, and that PSE has so many notches in it, I think the riser may break in half from it. Two years ago, he bought a Mathews SQ2 and is the first to admit that although he likes the new bow, it is no better than his old one. Faster, but not better.
I have a 1980 Martin Lynx that I been shooting fingers with a bit this year. I haven' t used it for about 6 years, but I' m thinking of going out and getting my next deer with it. I' m positive it will be no problem. Maybe you should tell this guy that hunting is the art of getting close and your bow is more than adequate when matched with your hunting skills, however you don' t blame him for wanting something better. |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
I shoot a PSE Nova... small & quiet & I' ve killed a truck load of deer with it.
Haven' t had an arrow bounce off one yet! |

RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
I shoot a PSE Mach 6 from the early 90' s. We just got my son a new bow, and I saw the new Archery Research bows, and they are SWEEET! But, when I thought about it, my bow hasn' t let me down one single time. Any time I came home without deer, it was because I didn' t put myself where the deer were, they winded me, or something like that. Not ONCE did I lose a deer because of the bow.
I would say that no deer are ever lost because of a bow. Deer are lost because of poor shot placement or a host of other things, but if you put a razor through certain areas of a deer' s body, the deer is going to die, period. I wonder if the deer can tell what type of bow he' s been shot with?? |
RE: Yo man, don' t be " dissin' " my bow!!
Well, at least he did not tell you to shoot a Mathews....he must have some credibility.....:D
Seriously though, what I have found with alot of folks is that they need to " feel" like they have some sort of edge compared to the next guy when they go hunting. Whether that is the newest gear or the best property to hunt it does not matter. Being a hunter is so much more than what some folks make it out to be. The next time the guy gives you crap then just smile and think of all the money you saved. ;) |
