RE: DEER STAND THEFT PREVENTION

I mentioned this on a different post. We set up a trailcam by a very visible stand and then went around talking about this awsome new stand and where we hung it. Well it never worked because the word got out that guys were setting up cams to try and catch theives, needless to say not many stands have climbed out of the tree over night since.;)

Somebody should come up with a break-away tree step that snaps after 50 lbs. of pressure is put on it.

We thought about the breaking steps, but that just sets yourself up for a lawsuit and more problems. Definitely not a good idea.

How about epoxy on the steps? [:o] Kind of the, " If you' re found here tonight, you' ll be found here tomorrow" type thing! :D

Better yet, get some gloves and rub some poison ivy on the steps.

I have reflectors about 3/4 of the way to my stand, the last part is done with landmarks, it can be kinda tricky in the dark but it is worth it.

How about a packet of that exploding dye they put in money bags, preferably in blaze orange. Wouldn' t that be appropriate? I don' t use reflective markers only a little surveyor tape to mark my way. I have had stands on public land for 4 years but they are so far off the beaten path that I don' t even lock them up.

The best darn prevention I know of is to have them meet my two friends, Mr. Smith & Mr. Wesson!! Works like a charm!!!;)

I use steel cable and a motorcycle lock. Steel cable is real hard to cut ![>:]

I' ve only lost 1 stand but have come up with a plan to maim the sorry bastard who thinks he can take my property. If you' re using screw in steps, take a couple and with a dremal tool make a fine cut along the portion you would grab with your hand( also the part you step on). Make this cut just long enough that it will hold a razorblade firmly. keep a couple of blades in you pocket and when climbing down for the night insert the blades into the steps and take the last 3 or 4 step as you normally would. Now if all goes as planned when the sorry bastard shimmies up the tree and grabs that 1st step (usually it would be a lunge with all the persons bodyweight below it) they will find that they have cut their finger to the bone on the razorblades that have been inserted into the steps. Unfourtanly the hospital won' t tell you has been treated for finger lacerations so it may be tought to find the person if you' d like to beat them in the head.
Just keep in mind that you need to take these blades out as you climb up he next morning otherwise it could be you with the lacerations. I don' t condone violence but I am an advocate for " personal property" ;)

I just saw an interesting product that makes it difficult for someone to get into your ladder stand to hunt from it, steal your accessories or the whole stand. Check out the website treestanddefender.com.
