The article from Two Beards was good and well worth a read. But I' m not sure it answered your question. It didn' t answer mine.
What I' ve found is that you need to rattle just after daybreak (before they get to bed) or start about an hour before you usually see them in the evening (in the hopes of pulling them out of bed early). The peak of the rut is the only time I rattle during midday. The article gives good insight into how to rattle depending on the time of year.
