** Success in PA: A Young Hunter Takes His First Deer! (Pics) **
#1
Had a great hunt Monday evening , I wanted to share with you guys…….especially since it involves a young hunter taking his first ever rack buck, and first ever deer with a bow to boot![8D]
I was hunting with my buddy Frank and his nephew “C.J.” at our archery club grounds, and since the rules of the club state that hunters under 18yrs old must hunt in sight of an adult we kept CJ who is 17yrs old close by and in sight of my stand about 75 yards away.
I hadn’t hunted this area before so Frank gets credit for stand placement…..thumbs up!
Anyway, About 5:45 what I thought was a nice basket racked 6pt and a bigger 5 pt came across a field and into the woods heading directly for me. About 37-38 yards out they turn broadside and are now pointing in CJ’s direction……..Boy, take him or let him walk? Wasn’t a hard decision really……..CJ saw them too and was ready!
They made a semi-circle around me never more than 40 yards out and stood again broadside. I decided this was CJ’s show! The “6pt” turned and went directly for his stand………oh boy this is getting good!
I watched him thru my binos at full draw and heard him “Bleat” to stop the deer….didn’t stop! One more time a little louder, and I see him lock-on the buck at 15 yards. SMACK!!! And all I see is the 5pt trot off, I couldn’t see the other buck run because of a couple trees.
After 5 minutes I got CJ on his two way radio and he indicated that YES the buck was hit and is lying 30 yards away not moving! I told him to just sit tight and keep an eye on the deer as it was on its side motionless. I couldn’t have been happier for him! [:-]
I didn’t have long to celebrate as about 10 minutes later I had a big doe come right up to my stand and give me a great 12 yard shot.
2 deer down in 15 minutes!
Little did we know it but Frank was at full draw on a 6pt about 100 yards to CJ’s other side………never got a good angle so Frank smartly held off shooting, but we almost tripled out!
Upon recovering CJ’s deer we quickly found out it was actually an 8pt! Neither of us could see the brow tines prior to the shot, but we could both clearly see the 3pts on each side making it a legal PA buck.
What a great night! Got to see a kid take his first ever deer with a bow (A BowTech of course! But one he bought with his own money from mowing lawns), and I got a little extra satisfaction by letting it walk…….I think someone rewarded me a few minutes later with that doe.
And it was extra special for Frank being it was his nephew whom he got into bowhunting only last year.
The pics aren’t the best because I forgot my stinkin’ good Digital Camera! My bad. But Frank had his disposable, and the pictures didn’t scan very well but you get the idea. Here they are:

Does this camo make me look fat?
Congrats to the young hunter. Yup, they appear to be packin' some pounds for a young deer.
