Last year in Manitoba in the spring I thought I heard that a bow hunter had to beat a bear that was coming up his tree. I remember that because we were out hunting bears at the time and we packed some heat too along with the bow. You will need a bug suit because there will be a lot of bugs, after sitting one night in a full bug suit I still had 47 bites on me. Bear hunting is different then deer hunting, a deer can't climb up the tree and eat you

Not to scare you or nothing, but there was an article recently about two guys over a bait bucket. One was filming and the other the shooter. The bear came up the tree after the unarmed filmer and, if I remember right, did some damage. I think the pepper spray would probably be sufficient, but I would feel more comfortable with a .454 Casull on my hip.

Leave the gun at home. I have 3 Blacks, all with a bow. Getting a gun into Canada will cost you some extra bucks these days. <BLOCKQUOTE id=quotequote:
The outfitter is suppose to be opening up a brand new area.

Yeah right, I've heard that one before.

A lot of things can go wrong entering Canada. They just don't let anyone in these days. You or anyone in your group ever had a DUI?

I heard that Nub...They are getting pretty rough at the border. I sure wouldn't take a gun if I didn't have to. Not only is it a hassle, it'll cost ya $50 CDN.

No offense to anybody from CA, I have friends there...but after my last trip I really don't have any use for the whole damn country.

I wonder...if you are really that freaked and cant get a gun or pepper spray in...how would that aluminum piping work around the base of your tree like for squirells but on a greater magnatude? you can always spray paint it some funky color and take a cordless and a few sheet rock screws and screw it into the tree below your stand !

When I went to Canada (94) they asked if I had any firearms. I said no, I had a bow. He wasn't too concerned about it. Did ask me why and I told him. Now my wife and 3 year old daugheter were following me in another car and in the next line (overnight type vacation before I kept going north) and her customs agent grilled her. Wouldn't believe I would hunt bear with a bow. Said they were too big and you couldn't kill one with a bow. I must have a gun in my car. Finally he let her go. Point is it depends on what agent you get as to the amount of hassle.
Oh, by the way, make sure you let the agent know you have a bear when you come back into the states so you can get the export papers. Otherwise they make you turn around and everyone knows you as the "bear man".

I have seen several posts about messquito suits. What are they and where do I get one?

Just about any major sporting goods store will carry bug suits. Ever been to Canada? Read above posts carefully and ask lots of questions. We would hate to see your trip delayed or denied entry.

Good luck Kansas. All this talk about outfitting, has got me pumped up about being an outfitter in the future. Good shooting.
