" The Can"
I went out and bought me " the can" estrus call and i was just wondering if anyone has had any successes with it. Thanks

RE: " The Can"
I used one last season with no luck. The only time I have ever called in a deer was with a doe bleat. I dont usually do this without seeing a deer but I was bored. I blew on this doe bleat a couple of times and I hear thrashing coming through the woods, so I stopped and 11 doe come running into my area. The leader of the group put on the brakes right in front of stand and was looking around to figure out where the deer was. It was quite fun to watch. I will still use the can this season as I do believe it will work.

RE: " The Can"
At the recommendation of a few friends I purchased one for this season. I' m looking forward to see how it works out.

RE: " The Can"
i have 3 of them, bought them more for my wife than me, i have called deer in by using a doe bleat, i still carry a can and use it but have not had any noticable luck with it as yet but i keep trying.

RE: " The Can"
FYI, there is no such thing as an estrous call. " The Can" simply mimics the contact call made by all deer, in this case doe and fawns. You can mimic the same call using any adjustable o-ring type call.

RE: " The Can"
I bought one last year. The very first time I tried it, I called in a small buck. I thought this thing was magical. But I used for a couple weeks after that and never had another deer come directly in. I will continue to use it this year though. It worked for me once so hopefully it will work again.:)

RE: " The Can"
I haven' t had any luck with mine, but I keep using it. I still like a grunt to stop em when they are walking around

RE: " The Can"
My buddy called in a few does and 2 nice bucks with his original can 2 weeks ago. I am going to try mine this weekend if the opportunity comes up.

RE: " The Can"
A friend of mine gave me a can a couple of years ago and i' ve tried it a few times with no luck. It doesn' t seem to scare the deer away though when i have used it with deer around me that i could see. They usually just stop and look towards me and move on or go back to doing whatever they were doing. I' ve never had any luck with rattling or scents either but i think it' s timing more so than anything else as i' m sure they all will work if the time is right. I have however had luck using a grunt tube and i' ve taken several good bucks while using one so i always have one hanging around my neck from day 1 until the last day of the season.

RE: " The Can"
I' ve used mine this season a few times (first time I' ve had it) and haven' t had any luck yet. I' ve been using it this early because, as Rob pointed out, it' s not an estrous call. It will work, if it works, all season.

RE: " The Can"
Two years ago I called in a small buck with the Original Can, it was on the last day of the a trip in the closing hours, the week had been real slow...I tried the call--tipped it over one time and had this buck come running straight to me. Now, it may have been coming anyway--but I swear it was the call. Plus, it added a great ending to the week of hunting!
But that was two years ago--I haven' t had anything respond to that call in since--and I am getting really hungry for some venison! :) |
RE: " The Can"
I' ve been using one for years. For me they seem to call in more does than bucks, but that is no scientific study. Silence it when you are not using it though. One time (at deer camp:D) I forgot. It was going of as I was climbing my tree, and next thing you know a doe comes running in looking at me as I am half way up the tree.
Two weeks ago I shot an 8 pointer and he would not respond to the can. He came right in when I grunted though. |

I am not trying to argue with you because I don' t really know if there is such a thing or not but I have read a fair amount of detail on such a bleat in Peterson' s and in North American Whitetail in the past. I will also be the first to admit that I think alot of what we read in magazines might be a little truth and a little bull combined.;) But to the topic at hand, I bought " The Can" last year after a buddy had great sucess calling in does with it. I tried it out and called in does and some small bucks on several occasions. I actually called in a group of 4 or 5 does and I ended up shooting one of the does for my first bowkill. I turned the can over softly about 3 times and 30 seconds later this group of does came trotting in at attention and appeared to be looking for the source of the call. Once they didn' t see anything they went at ease and started milling around. I have no idea if it is really an " estrous" call or just a common communication call between deer but I' ve been very happy with the results. |
RE: " The Can"
I' ve got one of the darn things too, but I' ve had more success mimicing one of the calls I saw a guy doing on one of the shows. Its hard to describe but the does AND bucks seem to love it...at the right time of the season.
I' ve seen does RUN from various calls at different times too. |
RE: " The Can"
I have the (early season can)
i have actually got mixed feelings bout it...i once called a doe to me that i seen some distance out, and was able to take her....and i also watched in horror as i tried to use it another time on a doe i saw as she bolted like she was off to the races....i don' t know what the heck happened....i didn' t do anything differently than i had done before....i still use it, but just kinda makes me wonder bout it sometimes... |
RE: " The Can"
I had a 1 1/2 old 6 point walking through the swamp. He stopped 33 yards away in an opening just large enough for me to see his head. When he put his head down, I turned “the can” over once and he jerked his head up, looked towards me and walked right to me stopping 17 yards away broadside. I had seen a few older deer, so I passed up the shot. Being the first season I have ever used “the can”, I have to say I am very impressed with it so far.

RE: " The Can"
I bought one last year after hearing good things about it, but had no success with it.
I carried it with me the first time this year 2 nights ago. I bleated 2 times with my regular call and was getting ready to pull out the can when the buck I killed showed up. |
RE: " The Can"
How do you keep the can quiet whole walking into the woods? I dopn' t want some love sick buck assaulting me in the dark!!!!:D

RE: " The Can"
TXCowBoy,
There is no known scientific research data indicating any doe that has a seperate distinct vocalization when in estrous. The vocalization the author could be refering to is simply the contact call which starts low then rises and falls in pitch which is what the " Can" imitates, or he could be refering to the social grunt. Either this or the author wanted to sell some calls....I' d be interested in picking that issue up and reading the article....do you know if he quotes any research? |
