No need to feel stupid. Most of us that have any experience have stood in your shoes.

If you could have taken the smell, an autopsy would have helped answer a lot of your questions. Did you look at the entrance and exit wounds? If in fact he was standing broadside and you hit him where you say, I doubt that he was intentionally heading for water, he wouldn' t have lived long enough to experience any type of fever.

Pushing him had nothing really to do with it. He was probably dead 30 seconds after the shot. You really didn' t push him. 171 yards is a long way to go with a double lung. Must have been low or something and just knicked one of the lungs and skewered the other. Give us the low down on the broadhead you used. Anyway, it' s not unusal to not get a lot of blood the first 30 yards.... That' s 3 hops and a jump. If you hit high it takes a while before the start putting much on the ground .... if they ever do. You didn' t push him.... you just missed the trail. Maybe you need a brighter light?

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, Buck in luck. At least your persistance paid off and you eventually found him.

Maybe the blades got dulled somehow. Shot in a target, corrosion from moisture(you can' t always " see" anything like rust, but they may have started to corrode, or maybe just a freak batch of bad blades. The odd-shaped, torn-looking hole has me wondering about the broadhead performance. If it was not a clean cut, he wouldn' t have bleed quickly, and probably wouldn' t have dropped much on the ground either.
It' s hard to say what happened. Sounds like it was a good shot and he should have been down in 100 yards or less. Saying that, I' m sure stranger things have happened.
