FYI bogobble, It' s not about being more ethical than thou. It' s about being a good and responsible hunter. As far as the world record and record book bucks go only offering a neck shot, I' ll tell you that during last years elk hunting season I was presented with more than one easily record book elk that only presented neck shots and I surely didn' t take them. Three of the elk I had with bad shots would have scored well above the minimum, 350" - 380" . I would much rather see a world record animal and possibly see him again than to make a stupid and crappy shot and not be able to find him and to know that he is out there some where with a hole through his neck dying a slow and painful death.

I was in Sportsmans Warehouse before this years hunting season and got to talking to a guide[:@] that was in there. During the conversation he mentioned that he tells his clients to take a neck shot if that is all they have. He said that if they hit the jugular or spine it will die a quick death and if they miss them it will be fine. Well, we got into an argument. How can any one say that the animal will be fine with a hole going through it' s neck? There could be a cut wind pipe, a cut trachea, and to top it off if you miss all of that then infection will set in the animals neck and probably get so bad that the infection itself wll kill it or it won' t be able to eat and starve to death.

The neck shot is not a good shot. It' s a down right crappy shot![:@] Also IMO if someone is consistantly taking these types of shots then that person shouldn' t be hunting in the first place.

Taking a neck shot on a trophy would also mess with the cape for a possible mount...

Any chance your brother was aiming for the vitals, hit the neck, killed the deer, and just said he hit what he was aiming for? Kinda like the " Oh crap..... I meant to do that" mentality? In this case I think it would have been more responsible to state the truth, that it was a shot gone bad that luckily turned out in the end.

It could happen. Just think about the guys who are aiming for the vitals and hit the femoral artery in the back leg and the deer almost goes straight down. (those guys can' t really say that they were aiming for the butt though)

Definitely a low percentage shot.

I have always been amazed that not one article that I read about the Beatty buck cast a critical eye on him for taking a neck shot.

and NO one, has the right to tell another hunter what shot to take or not take.
the decesion is strictly up to the hunter.

Gotta disagree with Treedog about it being a bad place for a rifleshot. A neckshot with anything above a 243 (or even a 220Swift, 22Cheetah, 224TTH) is a DEADLY shot and most times results in an instant, in their tracks kill. I think the shot needs to be kept in the " backhalf" of the neck (that being from the front of the shoulder to appx half way up the neck). Anything in front of that is not only a very small target but the fact that a deer can move that very small target in a very instant as you pull the trigger, makes it a bad idea or low percentage kill. But then again if you hit, its INSTANT lights out and if you miss its a clean miss.

Now for bowhunting there is no questioning the lethality of a sharp stick to the neck. But many of the same reasons I mentioned above plus the fact that without any " killing energy" an arrow can pass thru some areas of the neck without doing much damage (at least not quickly and lethal anyway). Inside of 20 yards, YES I have enough confidence to take that shot at " that world record whitetail" . But 9Xs of 10 if you have enough time for a neck shot, you likely will get a shot at the breadbasket if you have the right patience and frame of mind.

So you are going to sit there and tell all of us that as a " world record" animal comes in and only offers you a neck shot that you would take it even though there is a good possibility that you could just end up wounding the animal. Not to mention that you would most likley be excited enough that you wouldn' t be holding rock steady in the first pace.

I my not have the right to tell someone where hay should shoot an animal but when that person consistantly wounds multiple animals because they are careless and IMO just don' t care about the animals I do have the right to kick that person out of my hunting camp, or off of my property if I am a land owner and to report these actions to the wardens.

There is always that if huh. It aint always a clean miss with bullet or bow.

I don' t even take a neck shot with a rifle or a slug gun. I always aim at the BIG SPOT so I have plenty of room for error. I saw a guy try a head on neck shot once with a rifle. The last we saw of the deer he was still going with his lower jaw hanging off. Beautiful buck...just made me sick. Of course when he shot the deer went right in a heap. We' re stolling out across this clear cut to the deer 75 yards away when he comes to and takes off.
