Scared away my buck
#1
Grunted in a buck tonight, only to scare it away.[:' (] I didn' t have a shot on him as he was behind me, so I thought maybe if I bleated at him he might come around to the other side of the tree.....he flagged and was gone in a heartbeat. Dagnabbit!! (actually I said something in the four letter variety) Nice buck too.. couldn' t count points as they were kinda small but the rack itself was wide...ah well I know where he lives.

Tibonty,
Sounds like you made the same mistake many of hunter have made! Remember his eye sight is MUCH better than yours. If he comes into to one of your calls (especially in open areas) he expects to see another deer. When he doesn' t, he is going to know something is up and he will high-tail it. I would never call when a deer is at close range unless my intention was to make him stop.

Dale said it all, I made the mistake one time myself, it was heart breaking, he was a real nice buck and if I had kept my call quiet I would bet he would have come in.

Ya, he was the first buck I have ever called in, as this is the first year I have taken hunting seriously (I know it sounds bad, but in previous years I didn' t really know what I was doing)...and still don' t
I have used this board as a learning tool and have studied magazines and the like to try and increase my knowledge of whitetail habits. I have never taken a deer with my bow, never dressed a deer out by myself etc... No one in my immediate family hunts, so I have to rely on friends and complete strangers in my quest for harvesting a deer. I just learned a valuable lesson, unfortunately I learned the hard way. It is really warm here this week in s.w. michigan, so in a way its a good thing I didn' t put a shot on that guy, as I couldn' t hang him anyway.
