What' s Your Range?

What is your range when shooting at animals? Mine is about 40 yards max, depended on the conditions, but would rather have the 20-30 yards shot anyday.

RE: What' s Your Range?

40 yards would be the max on game. Would have to be an unalrmed animal and no wind though. I am comfortable at 50 but wouldn' t shoot at game that far.

RE: What' s Your Range?

I' m confident at anything 20 yards and in. 20-25 yards I' m 95% confident and won' t take anything beyond 25 yards. But for me 0-20 yards covers maybe 90% of my shot opportunities anyways. I can' t always figure it out, but it seems to me that a large percentage of my shots are always about 10-15 yards out anyways, so I concentrate on practicing at 10, 15 and 20 yards. It' s wierd because most of my hunting opportunities always end up being at about 15 yards. Maybe they like how I smell or maybe it' s because I hunt in thick cover and shots over 20 yards aren' t available.

Bottom line, no more than 20 yards because I know my 20 and in shots will be decent hits.

RE: What' s Your Range?

That would be 30 to 35 yards under ideal conditions. Like to take 20 yard or under shots.

30 yards on deer size animal.

I feel confident out to 40 yards, but it would have to be a real nice shot...

I would say about 30 yards or so....I always thought I was comfortable out to 40 yards. Recently I drew back on a deer at 40 and let him walk. Just seemed to risky.

40 yards max though I' ve never taken one over 30 to this date.

RE: What' s Your Range?

recently, I' ve read an aritcle written by one of the 5 top Canadian 3D shooters ?

" ....Many Bowhunters may question “Is it ethical to shoot game at that distance.” If you can group broadhead tipped arrows in a four inch group at fifty yards, you can feel confident in taking shots at Moose, Elk and Deer out to fifty yards. To have the ability to take game successfully at this distance several things must come into play and certain rules must be adhered to.

Here are my rules of engagement:

-The animal must be broadside or quartering slightly away
-There has to be virtually no wind. Wind drift can contribute to being a foot left or right
-The animal must have no knowledge of my whereabouts or better yet be distracted.
-The animal has to be standing still or feeding with its head down."

RE: What' s Your Range?

On game 25-30 yards.

Last week I refletched some arrows and shipped one toward a target 52 yards away (unknown range at the time). I held over instinctively with my 20yd pin and it hit pretty much dead nuts - I haven' t shot that kind of range in probably 10 years ;) and there' s NO WAY I' d try anything that extreme in the woods.

On the range I group acceptably at 40 yards. In the field every shot I' ve ever released has been inside 25. Insurance, I suppose.

RE: What' s Your Range?

In competition up to 80 yards with confidence, but in a hunting situation because of variable conditions prefer 10-20 yards.

RE: What' s Your Range?

With the speed of my new Patriot my range could easily go out to 30 yards with little pin movement.

I would take a perfect 25 yard shot but anything else must be 20 and in.

RE: What' s Your Range?

60 is the max.

I practice it...and under the right circumstances I would shoot it. I have never taken the 60 yard shot on game, but if it came down to it...I would take it.

The farthest I have ever shot was 30 though, and I' m plenty confident from 60 to zero.

Most of my shots are 25 and under, with the once in a blue moon 30 yard shot.

I' m a 20 yard guy. My longest has been 27 yards. I practice at longer distances but I pretty much stick to 20 on game. I sight in about 1" high at 10 yards and this puts me about 2" low at 25 with my setup.

I have three pins set on my bow 25,40and80 yards .My 25 yrd pin hits dead on at 27 yrds from25 feet in the air the other two pins are the ones that i practice with 90% of my practice is from 40 yrds 35% from 80 to help me keep steady.all shots at deer are aimed at a low heart shot 28 yrds and out are clean misses and 27 and in are dead deer

My max hunting range is 30 yards. I prefer the 15 to 20 yard shot if at all possible. I figure 17 yards, slightly quartering, and about a 160" rack is a sure shooter!:D

30 yards, thats all ive practiced at and im in the bullseye evertime. Ill practice at 40 when i get the time but i wouldnt feel comfortable shooting that far for now.

:D25-30 yds without a doubt! However most of my shots come within that range...

Got my dead nuts sights at 20,30,40 yards and have practiced hard to feel confident enough to shoot that and still practice at lest a little every day.

RE: What' s Your Range?

30 Yards is the longest shooting lane I clear. Of course I can see a deer working in, but 30 is the absolute farthest I will take a deer. I also have the ranges pre marked with red tape.

RE: What' s Your Range?

I was saying 40 yards before the season, but I' m gonna lower it a little to the 30-35 yard range just to be sure.

RE: What' s Your Range?

90.........That' s right. 90. I am very comfortable shooting game and targets at 90. As a matter of fact I have killed deer at 75 before. As fast as my bow shoots. 90 is my answer. 90.....feet that is.

Max range: 30 yards.
Min range: 10 yards.
Comfortable range 15-20 yards.
(My Cobra sights only have 3 pins anyway 10-20-30).

RE: What' s Your Range?

35 yds. I can shoot reliably out to 40, and I believe whole heartadly that I could take a deer at 40yds. But I limit myself to 35. I have already had to pass on 4 does this season becuase of my personal rule. I typically know the range to all of the tree' s even remotely near my stand. I try to create a mental " circle" in the woods around me, and only animals that enter that circle will I consider a shot at.

I am super confident 20 yds and under, 90% confident out to 30 yds, and 0% I shot any farther than that.

RE: What' s Your Range?

I really like 15 to 20 and would go for a 25 if all is perfect. I am not as dead nuts at any range like most of you. When you go over the 50 mark, years that is, something has to be blurry. I use glasses for far off so the deer is clear. This leaves the pins and peep blurry. Made a special trip to the eye doc and he wasn' t much help. I do manage a 4" hole most of the time at 20 so I feel pretty good about 20 yards. If you don' t wear glasses try a pair of sun glasses with some vaseline or simmular smudge and try to shoot.

RE: What' s Your Range?

It depends. To find my max range I start with kinetic energy. Find the recommended kinetic energy for the particular animal, say 45ft/lbs for white tail. Then I use the archery program and find out the max distance I can shoot and still maintain 5lbs over recommended. That would be my conceivable max range.

Then I take the size of the kill zone and compare it to my shooting skills. My max range based on skill is the max range that I can consistently (99%) group arrows within the size of the kill zone.

Take the shortest of these two ranges and that is my max range for that particular animal under optimum circumstances. This assures that I have the skill to hit the kill zone consistently and the kinetic energy to get the job done.

RE: What' s Your Range?

Solid out to 60 on non-moving, non living items.

Would NEVER take a shot on a deer at that range. Way too far for me and there is too much time for the deer to move before the arrow gets there.

Can hit the " pop-top" of a tennis ball can 3 out of 4 times at 40 - but would prefer to take them at 30 or less.

Funny thing - I am nearly perfect (9 of 10) at 30 yards, but only hit 7 of 10 at 10 yards. Form? Bow? Arrow?

RE: What' s Your Range?

I' m 100% confident out to 30 yards. Anything beyond that would have to be ideal conditions. 40 would be my absolute max and conditions would have to be perfect conditions.

RE: What' s Your Range?

With my eye sight and steady hand not what it used to be, good groups and still pretty consistent. 20-25 yards with 30 being my absolute limit.

RE: What' s Your Range?

Friend of mine shot a 125" deer at 45 yards with a spitfire 3 days ago and hit him perfect, he watched him fall after going only 40 yards. To me that would be a shot that conditions would just have to be perfct on. I have a 25, 35, and 45 pin and shoot 2" groups at 45, but 30 is the farthest I want to shoot at deer. Just to risky to lose a deer jut b/c of a bad decision.
