RE: Tree Stand Hunters- How High??????
I have a 20 foot rope tied to my stand to pull up my equipment. I climb up until the rope gets tight. That way I know that I am 20 feet up every time I hunt.

Actually, I rigged a retrieve rope that is 15' long. Like wolfen68 said, I too don' t see the point in 20 feet, 25 feet, .....100 feet (sheesh, that' s almost like climbing a radio tower!). Besides the pins on my old PSE Edge bow are set to 10, 20, and 30. I can nail the bullseye from 15 feet up, and I feel comfortable shooting at that height and range. Butch |
RE: Tree Stand Hunters- How High??????
Depends on the terrain. At all costs I try to get at least above 20. I bring pruners and a saw with me to try and get myself higher if I feel I need it. Alot depends on the amount of back cover I have a different heights also.

RE: Tree Stand Hunters- How High??????
Not very.
I dont do well with heights, tonight will be my first time practicing with my climber, i am hoping to get comfortable in the 10-12 foot range tonight. After that i will work at it until i can get into the 18-20ft area. |
RE: Tree Stand Hunters- How High??????
I tend to get up at least 12 feet and sometimes maybe up as far as 18 or so. Most important thing is to get high enough to control your scent, get good visibility and obtain a good backdrop or camo. For instance, in one place I hunt I barely get off the ground 10 feet. That' s because the tree I hunt in has excellent branches and foliage to keep me totally concealed. But, as the season progresses and the leaves fall off, I have to use a different tree close by so that I can get up a wee bit higher. So, height has something to do with it, but you also have to get yourself concealed as much as possible.

I hunt so high I have to shoot my arrows by Federal Express.[:o]
Actually between 20 and 25 ft. on average for bow hunting. And as high as 40 or 50 ft for gun hunting. |

RE: Tree Stand Hunters- How High??????
I hunt a minimum of 20' . Most of the trees around where I hunt don' t have any foliage until at least that high.

RE: Tree Stand Hunters- How High??????
I prefer about 24 feet.
Yea, it depends on the situation, but at 24 feet, it is amazing how much movement you can get away with without getting busted. |
RE: Tree Stand Hunters- How High??????
I have to chuckle to myself everytime I read that bowhunters install their stands high for the primary reason of having their scent go out and over the deer. That does not happen (scent going into the next county before it drops to the ground). At least not how some appear to believe it happens.
Regardless of how high you are, your scent (rafts) is dropping to the ground and the vegatation near you. In fact, you already left thousands upon thousands of scent particles on everything near your stand in the first minute you arrived at your stand, and thousands upon thousands more every minute you are present. The wind currents and natural floating of your scent rafts, are causing your scent to be scattered afar in many directions, with the heaviest broadcast occurring in the direction(s) the air/wind is moving. |
