RE: Tree Stand Hunters- How High??????
We use 12 & 15 foot ladder stands with NO problems. have Deer pass under all the time. No problem with scent either. hunted in the south where they place stands 25 feet & up-not for me-not because of height but angle of shooting.
We do great with ours for Many, Many years now. Took one of my biggest Bucks ever at 7 feet off the ground in a blown down Oak @ 15 yards. |
RE: Tree Stand Hunters- How High??????
Looks like I' m in the minority.
My average stand height is 12 feet. I have hunted as high as 16ft but feel comfortable at 12. The deer don' t look like rabbits at this height and I have had many go under my stand. I' m amazed how many of you guys go up to 25-30 thats unreal! At 12 feet you have to be very careful about placement though and the wind. You need lots of cover around to. Pines and hemlocks work best or a tree next to a pine. |
RE: Tree Stand Hunters- How High??????
about 12 to 15 feet any higher and my nose bleeds:D

RE: Tree Stand Hunters- How High??????
I would say from 12-20 ft. but the vast majority are 16 ft. I' ve went as high as 28' but I was just to worried about shot angle.

RE: Tree Stand Hunters- How High??????
Most of the time around 18 to 24 feet depending on cover, terain, tree and natural shooting lanes.Right now the leaves are all still on the tree and even finding shooting lanes above 14 feet are a challenge,so I must set up lower.

RE: Tree Stand Hunters- How High??????
I got my deer this year while 12 feet up and at 30 yards. The woodland I own is young, so I have a hard time going above 16 feet. Any higher and I find myself in the forest canopy at this time of year when the leaves are still on. So, I think you have to consider all the variables---many others here seem to concur.

RE: Tree Stand Hunters- How High??????
I believe the higher the better, but at the same time you can be too high. The higher you get the less chance you have of being winded and the more freedom you have to move. These are two very important things. I usually try to find a tree that I can get at least 20 feet up in. There are times that I don' t hunt that high, (in early fall bowseason when there' s too many leaves still on) but only if there aren' t any good trees available for me to get that high up in.
In the end it' s all about where you feel comfortable. If you don' t like being high up, set up lower and take a little extra time brushing up your stand. Good Luck!![8D] |
RE: Tree Stand Hunters- How High??????
Wow, y' all get up there...why so high? I' m usually at 10-15 feet...not because I am scared of heights, but because I don' t see the need to get 20+ feet off the ground. Seems like the deer would look like ants and the angle of the shot would be less than desireable. Oh well...to each his own.
