I work with a guy who hunts and basically hunts for the trophy aspect of it. He usually gives the meat away, which is fine because it is actually being used. Now to what has me so pissed off.
He has shot two does already this year, and luckily both of the died. Both deer were walking directly away from him and he shot them in the butt. According to him and the guys he was hunting with the arrow was just below the tail and above the hole. I would never have taken this shot because the likely hood of hitting any vitals is very low.
Next, he tells me he was out checking his game camera last night and took his bow with him. When he gets to the camera, he hears a noise and he gets himself somewhat hidden. A nice 8 point walks out and notices him so he is spooked. Well the deer is facing him directly, and he takes a shot at the neck. He says the arrow buried up almost to the fletchings. I guess he was trying to hit the jugular. Well to make a long story short, he tracked the deer last night and this morning and no deer to be found. He never found any blood and never found the arrow.
I have a hard time listening to this because I do not think he made quality shots to execute an effective kill. Yes he found the two does, but the shots were not high percentage by any means.
Sorry, I just had to vent. I cannot go to him and say something because he is a manager.
What are your opinions? Am I making a mountain out of a mole hill?
Thanks

What a prick. Gut shoots animals and gives them away. You ever ask him why he doesn' t eat what he kills? I for one would be insulted if somebody gave me a gut shot animal. It looks good at first but you open it up and the entire inside is just a big mess.
Seems he just wants to kill things. Stupid. Must have no respect for the game if he just takes whatever low percentage shots he gets the chance at.
I' ve killed goats by hitting them in the butt and the arrow came out the neck but only on accident. I was aiming for the top of the back from above directly behind at a close range and accidentally shot low. Somehow you do take out vitals tho. But you have to have the luck of missing all hard bone near the pelvis and back legs. The neck is also a terrible place to aim won' t even kill them unless you happen to hit the jugular.
Next time he' s telling you these stories, laugh at him or tell him he' s an idiot. Then next time he might watch what he does a little more. Or at least he might word it in ways that are less offensive. You never know too, he could just be lying.

This is exactly why broadside and quartering away are THE shots to take. The slob was lucky he was able to take those does at all. The bad part is, this idiot is reinforcing in his itty bitty mind that a straight away shot perfectly acceptable. It' s obvious he doesn' t have any respect for the animal and he in turn is probably bragging to anyone who will listen to him about his " incredible" archery skills. Unfortunately, this gives you and I a bad name too. Guilt by association.
